St Louis; a very cool city
St. Louis, I am frankly surprised to admit, rocks. What a cool city.
Yesterday we did our signing at Star Clipper Comics. It was a lovely store and had many things that we wanted to spend money on (we did buy a bunch of things, and later wished we had bought more).
The event started with a Q&A in a cool back room type area. There was an exhibit of original comic work on the walls (some really nice stuff). We were in the back of the room, with the people watching sitting in chairs and standing behind them. Scott spoke for an hour or so, and then signed for another two. The talk actually went in different directions than some of the others. People asked questions we hadn't heard before, which is always fun.
While the signing part was going on, I was talking to people in the line. I had a great time, though I think I talked a bit to much to some of the people. I need to learn to not be so loquacious.
After the signing, our host A.J., took us next door to a restaurant called Blueberry Hill, which had great decor and good food. There was loud music that came and went, which bothered Winter, but not the rest of us.
My personal Point-for-Me moment: A song came on, and I asked if it was Cake. Scott and Sky (who are the Cake fans in the family, I might add) both said no, the instrumentation was wrong. I had made my guess based on the voice. Anyway, we asked the waitress, and she went to find out. It was Cake. Point For Me!
It was a lovely night and we want to thank everyone who came to the event, and A.J. for being a wonderful host. Thank you.
We also want to thank the people both at the Star Clipper signing, and the fan at Krypton Comics who recommended places for us to visit while here in St Louis. We do not really need to be in Kansas until Monday, so we got to play today, and play we did.
Like always we got a very late start, but we are night owls and it is/was Saturday, so it was ok. First we went to the Science Center because they were having an exhibit based on Marvel Comics. It was science as seen through the filter of Marvel characters and was a lot of fun. An example of what they had was the Daredevil section where you got to close your eyes and walk through a room attempting to use echo location to feel your way around, there was also a place to see if you could identify items by feel, identify smells and balance with your eyes closed. There was also a video of Stan Lee talking about comics that reminded us all far too much of a video in Slings & Arrows, those of you that have seen the show (season 2) you'll know what I mean, and you can probably imagine what kind of a video it was.
After spending about an hour in the exhibit it was time for the museum to close, so we didn't see any more of it. It looked like we could have spent a very long time there, but at least we did do the one exhibit about as thoroughly as we could. Oh, another cool thing: They had a "make your own comic" station, and there were three books sitting there to give you a hand, one of them was Will's book Comics and Sequential Art, another one that I have forgotten, and Making Comics! Not only was it there, but the book had obviously seen some serious use, and it fell open to the page of all the faces. It was heartening.
After the Science Center and a short stop to stare at the arch, we went to what might be the coolest museum I have ever been to. It is called City Museum, and it is not like anyplace I have ever been. I could spend a huge amount of time telling you all about it, but Winter asked me not to. She wants to do a post, and Sky wants to as well, in fact, Scott wants to as well, so I will let all of them do it. I do want to say that it was amazing, and after they all post, I will fill in anything that didn't get said that I wanted you to know.
Thanks again. Tomorrow will be a driving day. On to Kansas, otherwise known as state number 45!
