St Louis; a very cool city
St. Louis, I am frankly surprised to admit, rocks. What a cool city.

Yesterday we did our signing at Star Clipper Comics. It was a lovely store and had many things that we wanted to spend money on (we did buy a bunch of things, and later wished we had bought more).

The event started with a Q&A in a cool back room type area. There was an exhibit of original comic work on the walls (some really nice stuff). We were in the back of the room, with the people watching sitting in chairs and standing behind them. Scott spoke for an hour or so, and then signed for another two. The talk actually went in different directions than some of the others. People asked questions we hadn't heard before, which is always fun.

While the signing part was going on, I was talking to people in the line. I had a great time, though I think I talked a bit to much to some of the people. I need to learn to not be so loquacious.

After the signing, our host A.J., took us next door to a restaurant called Blueberry Hill, which had great decor and good food. There was loud music that came and went, which bothered Winter, but not the rest of us.

My personal Point-for-Me moment: A song came on, and I asked if it was Cake. Scott and Sky (who are the Cake fans in the family, I might add) both said no, the instrumentation was wrong. I had made my guess based on the voice. Anyway, we asked the waitress, and she went to find out. It was Cake. Point For Me!

It was a lovely night and we want to thank everyone who came to the event, and A.J. for being a wonderful host. Thank you.

We also want to thank the people both at the Star Clipper signing, and the fan at Krypton Comics who recommended places for us to visit while here in St Louis. We do not really need to be in Kansas until Monday, so we got to play today, and play we did.

Like always we got a very late start, but we are night owls and it is/was Saturday, so it was ok. First we went to the Science Center because they were having an exhibit based on Marvel Comics. It was science as seen through the filter of Marvel characters and was a lot of fun. An example of what they had was the Daredevil section where you got to close your eyes and walk through a room attempting to use echo location to feel your way around, there was also a place to see if you could identify items by feel, identify smells and balance with your eyes closed. There was also a video of Stan Lee talking about comics that reminded us all far too much of a video in Slings & Arrows, those of you that have seen the show (season 2) you'll know what I mean, and you can probably imagine what kind of a video it was.

After spending about an hour in the exhibit it was time for the museum to close, so we didn't see any more of it. It looked like we could have spent a very long time there, but at least we did do the one exhibit about as thoroughly as we could. Oh, another cool thing: They had a "make your own comic" station, and there were three books sitting there to give you a hand, one of them was Will's book Comics and Sequential Art, another one that I have forgotten, and Making Comics! Not only was it there, but the book had obviously seen some serious use, and it fell open to the page of all the faces. It was heartening.

After the Science Center and a short stop to stare at the arch, we went to what might be the coolest museum I have ever been to. It is called City Museum, and it is not like anyplace I have ever been. I could spend a huge amount of time telling you all about it, but Winter asked me not to. She wants to do a post, and Sky wants to as well, in fact, Scott wants to as well, so I will let all of them do it. I do want to say that it was amazing, and after they all post, I will fill in anything that didn't get said that I wanted you to know.

Thanks again. Tomorrow will be a driving day. On to Kansas, otherwise known as state number 45!

You know what I'm going to say, don't you? If you have something to say about the museum, then I would love to hear it from you. If other people want to talk about it too, then fine, but I want to hear what you have to say.

St. Louis sounds awesome! How cool that you were there at the same time as the superhero exhibit at the science centre. (Maybe this will make up for missing the chocolate exhibit at the Vancouver science centre?)

Aww, I missed you! I was so exited!

I work at the city museum. Well, at the Aquarium inside the museum actually. I can certify that it is indeed a wonderful place.

I went to St Louis back in 1978- auditioned for a college in its burbs. (Webster College, if u were wondering. Ironically, they are the first college to have had a Bachelor degree in Stage Management. But I digress.)

When I went, I was with my mom, and the only exciting thing I recall is going out to dinner at some restaurant at the top of a building, the kind that revolves around the building. It had delicious food and an incredible view of the Arch.

My Mom has been wanting to return (good friend of hers lives there). Thinking the museum might intrigue her, I looked it up online (CityMuseum.org); WOW.
Definitely want to go; tho probably not w my Mom.
I look forward to hearing ALL of the views on that mulitfaceted place!
Hugs

You do need to go! I think that you will love it, but I don't think your mom would. If you find a child to bring, it is a blast watching them, and then you don't have to feel bad when you don't climb and swing, etc. So much fun.

I will do my report soon; Winter is planning on having hers up either tonight or tomorrow, and it will have pictures!

i can't wait to hear Sky and Winter's account of the museum. two years ago when i took a cross-country road trip, i arrived in St. Louis four hours too late to check out City Center, and it was one of the only (and biggest) disappointments of the trip. so i can't wait to hear how it was.

i came into this blog late, so my apologies if you've already talked about this, but did you get to the House on the Rock in Wisconsin?

NO!!!! And I so wanted to! We were hoping to, but in the end we didn't have the time, or we weren't in the right place or something.

I think that was the place that made Scott and I decide that we would have to come back someday, and see all the places we had wanted to see, but missed.

you really should. i burned through all my savings doing my road trip but i can't tell you how grateful i am for the memories. and the House on the Rock was...well...let me put it this way: i was astounded and delighted to find it even weirder and more fantastic than the way Neil described it in American Gods. i was also surprised to discover that Wisconsin itself is a beautiful state, with a lot of really awesome things, including the Safehouse bar in Milwaukee, a hidden "spy bar" you enter by means of secret passages. there's a part of me that's been looking for some sort of excuse and means to take a vacation there since that trip. if my memory of the rumor mill serves me right, didn't Neil move to that area? it sounds like the sort of trip to make with a Fairy Godfather.

i hope the rest of your trip is going well. i'm still bummed that i didn't know about this tour until you were well-past pennsyltucky, but i'll keep a weathered eye on the blog for a possible return. safe driving and good adventures!

/end geekout.

Neil is why I wanted to go there, and I am not sure exactly where the House is.

We had to settle for seeing Neil, instead of the House on the Rock, when we passed through Minnesota and Wisconsin on our way to Illinois. Scott and I will get to the House someday.;-)

Neil is also why i ended up at the House on the Rock. when i was planning my road trip, i used three sources: AAA, the 'off the beaten path" guidebook, and American Gods. there were a lot of places in American Gods that we would have liked to visit but couldn't either because a) they were too far out of the way or b) Neil had made them up but we did stop at the Center of the United States and the House on the Rock. the Center was just as creepy and distressing as portrayed in the book (and was, undoubtedly, made creepier and more distressing by being able to point at the motel and say things like "there! that's where Wednesday's body was! did that curtain just move???"). the House on the Rock turned out to be even more magnificently weird and astonishing and cool than i could have imagined. the House lives in Spring Green, which is also (and not entirely coincidentally) where Frank Lloyd Wright's demesne of Taliesin lives.

there's also a hotel with a pool containing a large model of the Beatles' Yellow Submarine. this is the sort of weirdness you can make a weekend out of.

I think I'm one of the people you talked to for a long time. Don't worry, I had fun listening to your travel stories. :-)

I'm glad you made it to the Science Center. I saw the create your own comic area, but I didn't see Making Comics there. That's pretty cool you saw it.

Come back to Missouri again!
