A very cute young woman just walked out of the library carrying Eisner's Comics and Sequential Art, and having flipped through McCloud's Understanding Comics.
That's what's missing in so many fangirls and boys: A need to understand the underpinnings of the art. There's entirely too much OMG I WILL DIE OF SQUEE CUZ THAT IS MADE OF SO MUCH AWESOME, and not enough "what makes that awesome?".
She said she'd just read the graphic novel Tricked, and the first webcomic she mentioned was Sinfest.
She was also tall, so to contemplate that after having let her disappear is just too much. |

| [ | mood |
| | tired | ] | Hello every one! sorry it has been so long since I've posted, but here I am with a poem that a wrote. You see, last night I was thinking allot about romance and sadness, so I decided to rite a poem for the young people who are sent off to war.
His words touched deep as I fell in a state as he said goodbye we were laughed at by fate
my eyes melted down as they closed into his I tried to let us part as hard as it is
he needed to sing the song of love one last time before he took off to above
we both new that soft quiet tune but why asked I why so soon
his soft silver hair so nice to the touch “please don’t leave” I begged with it in my clutch
his soul screamed for help it shouted with rage his smile was posed as if on a stage
what should i do just stand there and watch what I would do to turn the pain down a notch
As we were so close to both our first kiss the plane came down and shattered the bliss
he said that he would come back and he would be okay but when his team came back he was m.i.a. |

[Cross-posted at smccloud and mccloudtour until I decide which one to focus on...]
Good interview at Comicgate conducted by editors Bjoern Wederhake and Daniel Wuellner while I was in Frankfurt, Germany in October for the Bookfair. A good summation of where my head is at this point in my life.
Still traveling and still unsure where to post about it. I'm at VizThink in SF right now, having flown directly from Angoulême (strangely with no jetlag!). Finally coming home tomorrow.
I realize I've been hibernating lately, where the web is concerned. Sorry about that. I'll probably come out of hiding once I finish the pitch for the graphic novel and get things rolling on that front.
Finally, I love this song and video (already loved the band) and we totally know the final dancer! Ivy's been in plays with Palmer and everything. His new status as YouTube superstar came out of the blue. Very cool news for a real sweet and talented guy. |

If you haven't gotten the newest Comic Con International Update, check it out online!
It has transcripts of a few panels, one of which it describes as being "one of the most fun panels of the weekend." What panel would that be you ask? Well, I will tell you, it was the panel that Sky and I came up with (neither of us are sure which one came up with it, I think the panel might have been her idea, and the title mine?): My Dad Makes Comics, it was supposed to be an excuse to get Maddy Gaiman and Yolanda and Liam McKean and Alexis Kitchen together on a panel, but in the end Sky and Winter were the only ones of that group available, so the Con got Matt Wagner's kids, Brennan and Amanda who were awesome in their own right, and it made for an unforgettable panel.
The excerpt is three pages long for the book, and even longer here online. Honestly, if you missed it, you should go read it now. It is too funny.
I hope that this means that Sky will get her wish to have it a regular feature every year with different kids (of course her plan is to continue moderating, the idea being that she can be on the next one, but her sister can't. Yes, her mind works like that).
And the picture of the the girls is soooo them, and the one of Scott and I is not embarrassing! |

Heidi has the scoop at The Beat:

Look for the broadcast on some NBC affiliates this coming weekend (Saturday, I think). Can't guarantee I'll make the final cut (my ventriloquist presenter had teleprompter problems and choked a bit, so the two awards he gave out might not even air) but it's worth it for the Stephen Colbert and Amy Sedaris bits alone.
Just one more trip in October (then I get to be home for an entire month!):
Friday, October 26 in Commerce, Texas: The EGAD Conference.
Be seeing you! |

Mr. McCloud and crew: I was unable to catch you on tour this year, but I just wanted to thank you for putting out "Making Comics". I am part of a self published comic where we just put out our first issue when this book came out. I use it as a resource to better understand the industry and the techniques that my illustrator uses, since I play the humble role of writer.
If you wish to check it out feel free at : www.comicsobscura.com . I am involved in "The Tao of Snarky" titled comic.
Thank you again for the invaluable resource for both a comic book collector and writer. |

On the Road Again... (Sorry, just me this time).
Hi, just wanted to let you know about some upcoming events this October. Posting this from LAX on my way to...
October 11-14: Frankfurt, Germany
I'll be attending the Frankfurt Bookfair, signing, and giving a lecture on the Friday the 12th.
Wednesday, October 17: Chicago
Yes, I'm finally giving my full public lecture in the Windy City! And so is Art Spiegelman and other amazing artists. It's all happening at Columbia College.
Saturday, October 20: New York (and Around the World!)
The Fourth Annual 24 Hour Comics Day will find me hanging out at Jim Hanley's Universe. Where will you be?
Monday, October 22: New York
The Quill Awards! With cool guests like Stephen Colbert this black tie event should be really something. I already won, technically, so there's not a lot of suspense, but Ivy and I (yeah, she's flying out for this one) wouldn't miss it for the world.
Friday, October 26: Commerce, Texas
I'll be keynoting at this year's EGAD conference and visiting the great folks at Keith's Comics.
Okay, got a plane to catch. See you on the road!
[Cross-Posting this with smccloud until I can figure out which one to use from now on] |

Better Late Than Never...

Yes, at long last, here's my photo report of the last 7 weeks of our massive fifty state tour. Sorry for the delays! Who would have thought that the busiest days would've been AFTER getting home?! |

[Sep. 27th, 2007|05:49 am] |
Why yes, I am speaking in Austin tonight, now that you ask.
Yup. That's tonight, Thursday.
I didn't make a big deal of it earlier, because:
a) The endowment paying for speakers to come out stipulates that the talks be given in the Joynes Reading Room, which is kinda small and I wouldn't want people counting on getting in and then not being able to.
b) I'm still figuring out whether to keep announcing new travel dates (like my as-yet-unannounced upcoming trips to Frankfurt, Chicago, New York, Commerce TX, and Belgium -- Yikes!) here on the tour blog or just go back to my regular blog updates.
c) I was secretly scared that the sight of me might remind you that I still need to finish my photo report.
*Sigh.*
Who would've thought that the most insanely busy weeks of my life would be the weeks right *after* the tour was over!? |

| Scott won't tell you, but I will |
[Sep. 10th, 2007|02:41 pm] |
What Scott forgot to mention, because he is too modest, is that you can vote for "Book of the Year". If you want to vote you can go here.
I did. |

[Sep. 10th, 2007|01:11 pm] |

Making Comics won for graphic novel!
Thanks to everyone who voted. You rock.
Meanwhile, we're settling into life here in So. Cal. Still planning to post more photos, accounts etc., but still waiting for the dust to settle -- an expression I've used all my life, but now have the honor of using literally (there's a lot of dust around here after hauling everything out of storage). |

| Making Comics turns One! |
[Sep. 5th, 2007|05:07 pm] |
Just thought I would take this opportunity to say a Happy Birthday to Making Comics which turned one today.
This weekend the Harvey's will be given in Baltimore, and MC is nominated! Some of our favorite books are nominated in other categories, I am glad I don't have to make some of those decisions. It is also nominated for a Quill award in October, which will be televised and Scott will be there (though, honestly, he has some very tough competition, so, we'll see...).
Today, in honor of MC's 'birthday' I have started to blog again in my regular blog ( ivy_rat), you can find me there for the most part from now on. |
