{snakes} is a set. R^2 is a set of points, not of sets.

Yep, that was my first thought, too.

Also, I don't get it: snakes in the plane, on August 18, 2006? What's the joke?

There's a movie called "Snakes on a Plane" coming out in August. ;)

Well, I'm a mathemtician. What do you expect?

Seriously, though, I watch a lot of movies and tv, and listen to quite a bit of radio; I'm pretty pop culture savvy. But I've never heard of this. Weird.

Not if you define "snakes" to be points, in which case {snakes} would be a set of points.

(Reply to this) (Parent)(Thread)

[info]improvedhuman
2006-07-02 01:15 am UTC (link)
Then {snakes} would be a subset of R^2 - not an element of it.

Now, if you could define points to be sets of snakes, it would work.

(Reply to this) (Parent)(Thread)

[info]just_you_wait
2006-07-02 07:19 am UTC (link)
couldn't you just define 'snakes' to be a single point?

(Reply to this) (Parent)(Thread)

[info]improvedhuman
2006-07-02 02:16 pm UTC (link)
Um... no - if 'snakes' is a point, then '{snakes}' is a set of points.
Elements of R^2 are points - not sets of points.

Screw string theory. Our "strings" are made up of coiled up snakes biting their own tails. MIDGARD SERPENT REPRESENT!

It's a drawing from Le Petit Prince. It was the closest I had to Snakes on a Plane. :) Now we could define a set such that a snake eats an elephant...

R2 is shorthand for the cartesian product of R with itself. Similarly, R3 is 3-space and Rn is Euclidean n-space, i.e., the set of all n-vectors with real coordinates.
