Chatting about everything and nothing (just to help him feel welcome, of course), [info]trueriver escorted Raymond down the path by the river until they caught up to Laurie who was strolling with Gyp and Patch. After hasty introductions, she abandoned the pair, quickly making her way back toward the patio. She must see how [info]my_cnnr was getting on with Lucy, she rationalised to herself, as she speeded back down the path. After all, it wasn’t fair to leave her to manage on her own, given how unusual some of the guests were at this year’s party. Even this late in the day, you never really knew what might happen!

Summary: Not exactly a horror fic, but one with fear and dark shadows, inspired by speculations in the chapter-by-chapter discussion of The Persian Boy as to whether or not there was still a physical side to the relationship between Hephaistion and Alexander after Bagoas. Title: The Beautiful and the Good
Author: True River
Book: The Last of the Wine
Pairing: Philon/Alexias
Rating: Adult
Disclaimer: I don’t own these characters and make no profit from them.
Notes: Backstory for Alexias's uncle, "The cup was standing on the floor beside him; he had tipped out the dregs, and written PHILON with his finger, as one does after supper in the last of the wine.... My father used to say that all over the City, those who died in the plague were the beautiful and the good."

Sometimes a shadow of misgiving came over Alexias, should they invoke the displeasure of the gods, for loving one another more than they ought.

A gentle rustling sound from inside the pavilion is all that heralds the arrival of an elderly woman, richly dressed in blue and silver. Olympias welcomes her with a cordial smile on her face.

Olympias: Sisygambis, how good you could join us. How is my daughter-in-law?

Notice how I titled that Our project?

;)

In response to some of the Member's suggestions, [info]trueriver and I are planning to make the Fic Archive a little more user-friendly by adding some descriptive info to each entry. It's a bit of a job, but not an unpleasant one - its actually a great excuse to reread every fic on the shelf! But that's also why it may take forever complete, as I am more likely to spend the summer reading than appending entries. So we're asking for your assistance.

Just some mixed admin stuff....

First, and most importantly, a sincere thank you to everyone who participated (or is still participating) in any/all of the 5YO activities. [info]trueriver and I have said it before, but it remains true that we are constantly humbled by the generosity and talent of this community's Members. Thank you. *hugs*

Next, a warm welcome to those Members who have recently joined us. We hope you will enjoy your time here, and become an active participant at [info]maryrenaultfics. Lurking is ok, but not half as fun as playing along! Please feel free to use this post to introduce yourselves, or just jump directly into any of the current discussions.

Our apologies to anyone who has applied to join us and not heard back. Please don't assume you've been refused membership. If you've been following the comm, you'll know we've been quite busy with our fifth anniversary celebration, and may have missed the notification. We do, however, freely admit to being a little more wary these days - a response to both past experience and to changes in our LJ environment. We recommend first reviewing our User Info and the Membership and Moderation Update, and then contacting either [info]trueriver or myself through PM or email to discuss your interest in joining [info]maryrenaultfics.

We'd like to remind everyone (and I include myself and TR!) that the "Favourite Fives" thread was designed with the entire community in mind - not just the established writers - and that of all the 5YO activities its been the least attended. I'm going to commit to having my Fav 5's posted by the end of next week...how about you?

And finally a hint that there's a major page renovation in the works - one that we'll be asking *you* to assist with. It actually sounds kind of fun....but we'll talk about that later.

Thanks for taking the time to read this - back to the good stuff now!

"You're like a gamecock for finery"

Prompted by the our recent visits to the ITOW uni, TR and I have been talking about how Renault's characters might react to the way in which they were constructed and written. Taking that uni as a given, it's not really that outlandish a thought. I don't know that any of us, at one time or another, hasn't had a moment of introspection and wished for traits more admirable than those with which we've been blessed - "I wish I was more patient" or "less rigid" or even "tidy". And if we haven't had enough had those moments, there is usually someone in our life willing to point out our, erm, opportunities for improvement. Best friends, lovers, parents - all of those folks can be counted upon for an occasional round of "how about let's fix you".

That's where we thought this might be a topic for the comm. Anyone care to dig up some examples of either situation? Of Renault's characters engaging in some self-awareness, or of friends/lovers helping them along? What prompted the episode and, in cases of the latter, how was it received? If you freed the character from the book's pov, how might they comment upon the episode?
