New movie for Martin coming out on August 24, 2007 (supposedly) in the US.

TRAILER (and yes, Martin does appear in it briefly)

Stills from the film: 1 | 2

---

Martin's brother has also updated his official website with info on the film The All-Together, which was already released in UK in May, apparently to bad reviews. Alas, no release date for the US as of yet, and it may just skip over us and go directly to DVD (if that). :/

Anyway, there's also a trailer and info at The All-Together official site here.

Enjoy!

It's not even available in the UK yet, so this is quite a surprise! I haven't had time to properly watch it yet, but there are some special features: Behind the Scenes (15:34), Outtakes (4:44), and commentaries on episodes 1 and 6. Listening to the first few seconds of the commentaries it appears that episode 1's has the creative cast (writer/producer/directors) with Martin and Hugh Bonneville joining them for episode 6.

How envious are you Brits now? ;-)

Found these new stills and poster at IMDB from Martin's upcoming new movie, The Good Night.
Martin in The Times

Martin Freeman had an article in The Times today about his Motown record. And today I found out how to make my scanner work!

It's Motown Freeman
The actor Martin Freeman has just released an unusual side project — his choice of gems from Hitsville USA. Explain yourself, young man

June 1987. I'm about to embark on a mission, one that I'm still on, one that has taken me to many places, led me to meet many people, real and imaginary. One that will help to put me in touch with feelings I didn't know existed. I'm about to buy my first Motown record.

Fast forward to 2006 and everything has come full circle. I have picked 20 of my favourite Motown tracks for the Motown Made to Measure series.

So, how did we get here? Well, let's go back to that first record. I'm 15. I have just bought 20 Mod Classics Vol 1 — a collection put out in 1979 to capitalise on that year's obsession with all things mod, thanks to the popularity of the Jam and the success of the film Quadrophenia. All of the songs were from 1963 and 1964, still fairly early in the story of Motown's success.

I knew a couple of the songs. The rest were a revelation. I'd been into "dance" music since I was 9, first with 2-Tone, then back through the original ska and bluebeat tunes and on into reggae. So I was no stranger to sounds that made me want to move. But this was different. This wasn't political, for a start. At least, not in the way that I recognised as political. It was up. These songs were happy, even when they were sad.

I knew Diana Ross and the Supremes. I knew Marvin Gaye. I had heard of Smokey Robinson. I really liked what I knew of Stevie Wonder. But I didn't know much of their music, not really. I kind of knew it was "mod" music, without really knowing why. It reminded me of ska in a way, probably in the energy and clothes. And I liked it. I liked the voices, the songs, the playing.

So I bought more. I got albums by the duo of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, by the Temptations. I got to recognise and love what they called the Motown Sound. This was something to belong to, which is quite important when you're 15. Or 34.

The clothes helped. Loafers, white jeans (courtesy of the Style Council, who shared my love of Hitsville USA), Prince of Wales checks, button-down shirts — kind of like the fashions I'd loved as a not-very-rude boy years earlier. Something new had come into my life. And not just Motown but, more importantly, soul and R&B — the wider world of black music, for want of a less restrictive term.

A nice thing about getting into music that was around before you were born is that there's so much of it. Some time ago a friend expressed some envy at my not having heard everything by the Band yet. He wished he could be in that position again, to hear it for the first time.

Well, with Motown, there's always something to discover. With seemingly bottomless vaults, chances are there will be "new" old product being released for some time.

Of course, not all of it will be good. Some of it will be awful. I've never been under the illusion that Motown always put out good music. The company's founder, Berry Gordy, was a hard-nosed businessman whose love for a good riff was matched only by a love for extracting money from the purses of young America. This could result in cynical, lazy, cash-in music. The thinking went: if an idea works once, it will work 39 times. In the same month.

But the best of that stuff is just ridiculous. In the Golden Age of Motown — let's say 1960 to 1967 — you had the Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, the Four Tops, the Temptations, to name but a few. On the production side you had Whitfield and Strong, Holland/Dozier/Holland, the wonderful Smokey Robinson and Gordy himself. All very young, hungry, talented people, fiercely competing with other labels and, just as importantly, fiercely competitive with each other. These people had the rest of the pop industry asking how they sold so many records, how they made those records so loud, and how they got so many white people dancing.

And the beauty was, there was no real answer. They were just doing it. As were the folks over at Atlantic, Stax, the Brill Building and Abbey Road.

That's not to say it was free, easy and purely artistic. It wasn't. They wanted to sell records. They all wanted a Cadillac. But, to my mind, Motown is the finest example in pop of art and commerce working hand in hand. Gordy may have been hard-nosed, but how many other record company heads could break balls and terrify people but also knew about chord progressions? And wrote songs, good songs? And I've not even got to the part of the story where the company talents morph into geniuses. The holy trinity of Smokey, Marvin and Stevie became so important to Motown, and to popular music as a whole, that their legacy needs to be measured by someone more eloquent than me. Suffice to say, if you can imagine a pop landscape without The Tears of a Clown, What’s Going On or Superstition then you're a crueller man than I am, Gunga Din.

When it came to choosing the tracks for my CD, though, I wanted my selection to be honest. I decided to stick to the records I already owned, as accessing Motown's vaults would have felt like cheating. I wanted to choose records that had been with me for a while, records that have been the soundtrack of my life. I also made a conscious decision not to think too hard about what tracks I was going to include — otherwise I know it would have taken me for ever.

Motown: Made to Measure, compiled by Martin Freeman is out now on Motown/Universal

These are just three of my favourite things

Ooh Ooh Baby
The Miracles
I was about 16 the first time I heard this — and immediately fell in love. Smokey Robinson's lyrics are superb, and his vocal delivery is perfect. One of the greatest love songs.

The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game
The Marvelletes
Smokey Robinson also played a key role in this track, writing and producing it, and it's another example of him pushing the boundaries of what you can do. Musically, this song goes all over the place, starting with a great riff followed by those unmistakeable Motown drums.

It's a Shame
The Detroit Spinners
Produced and co-written by Stevie Wonder, this sounds as fresh today as the day it was made. A perfect three-and-a-half minutes of pop. Classic.

I was walking in Hyde Park today and who did I encounter when I came upon the Serpentine? It was none other than Martin pushing a pram! I obviously had to do a double take after which I confirmed that it was indeed Mr. Freeman. In a split second I decided I had to say something so I threw out a couple of words which probably sounded like "congratulations on the new baby. I read the news on the internet". Which, come to think of it, sounds incredibly stupid as he was pushing a pram. Coming from a complete stranger, this must have totally freaked him out. But he wasn't (that) flustered and said "thanks" while he made a speedy getaway ;)

Anyway, I can't remember what he was wearing but I did notice some classic Martin Freeman-sideburns. The whole encounter lasted a good 15 seconds but hey, those were some 15 seconds! Hehe. I didn't see Amanda and I totally forgot to ask for the baby's name. Hmph. My guess is Louis. Or Barney?
