A few judo/gi questions.
I'm already researching the Christmas present I want to give my boyfriend. I really would like to get him a judo gi. However, I've noticed sizing is a problem. He's tall (6'3") but weighs 170lbs with a long torso. He complains his current gi top isn't long enough. Any recommendations on whether or not to base the size on height or weight, and is it possible to have a gi altered or tailored? I feel like if I would get him one based on height, he'd be swimming in it.

Also, great recommendations for a judo gi brand/website to purchase is great. I would prefer to spend around $120, but know gi's usually run more. I don't want to get a poor quality gi, but cannot afford anything more than $150 (my limit would be around $170, if free shipping is included).

Additionally, what other items do you think are essential for a judoka to have in their judo bag? Tape, etc- stocking stuffer ideas.

Thank you so much for any help you offer!

You'll basically need to get a custom-fitted gi or ask around for people on how different brands shrink after washing.

It's hard for a gi to be altered/tailored because of the toughness of the fabric and the seams. My sleeve ripped on my BJJ gi, and the tailor tried to stitch it together. One hard tug and *RRRRRIIIIIPPPP*

Judogi are subject to strict measurements for competition.

As far as judo bags, snack foods, first-aid kit with nail clippers, maybe a nylon drawstring bag for smelly stuff, tape (as mentioned, for sprains or buddy-taping fingers together), maybe a pair of cheap flip-flops for showers or just walking around.

attama gi's go all the way to size 9 judoka grappling gi's and they have two types s and l in each size so if your stocky or long they are the better fit they are a bit more prisy well not as bad as addidas but still pricy none the less but in this case they are value for money for sure they will out last any other gi out there trust me ive been through em all

personally all i can recommend is some sort of good protein powder for post training recovery (bsc have a good one called nitrovol ) and paracetamol and ibuprofen and lots of both if his judo is anything like mine they ll become his best friend

I've had good luck with uniforms from e-bogu. One of the nice features is that other than providing a traditional size, you can provide them with height weight, and make a note of special fitting issues on the page:

You can buy a larger one and then send him to have it tailored. I don't see why that would be a problem. We have a few women in our dojo that have to do something similar because of how they fit...
