Odd News for Odd People- An Odd Austin Update 11/28/09 [Nov. 28th, 2009|04:36 pm]

This update reports truthful news, unlike Fox:

-#3 ON DR. D-
The rockin’ gods of amazing-a-tude have allowed yet again for a rain of awesome to fall upon me as this month Vampires Suck (Feat. Devo Spice) is #3 on the Dr. Demento Show’s Top 10! Not only does this mean that I’m getting national radio airplay again, but it also means that I will more than likely (Hopefully) be in the good Dr’s year end Funny 25 countdown, which will be broadcast at the end of next month. Also, if you hadn’t heard, he also played ‘Vampires’ on his second Halloween show this year. Finally, we can show those weird Twilight fanatics that vampires on not in fact, sparkly, or driven to fallen in love with a silly mortal, but instead totally gangster. Thank you so much everybody who requested my song, please keep requesting VAMPIRES SUCK by ODD AUSTIN at http://www.drdemento.com/request for next month so we can insure that I make the year end countdown, thanks again!

-SHE’S ALWAYS A HILTON-
Hey, gang, guess what? I have just released a brand new parody that will be included on my upcoming second studio album (Tentatively titled, “Inconspicuous Explosion”, catchy, right?). The song is a parody of Billy Joel’s classic, ‘She’s Always a Woman’, titled ‘She’s Always a Hilton’. You can go get it for free right now at http://www.oddaustin.com, why donchya? Enjoy!

-MILEHICON 41 REPORT-
So, last month I performed at MileHiCon for the second year. You may recall that I released my debut album (Wrong Side of the Bed, available now in the online store at http://www.oddaustin.com/store.php) last year at the con. This year I released nothing new there, but I did have a great time. So I got there on Friday and unloaded my surprisingly massive amount of equipment for the show. I brought it all up to my hotel (You may think, but Austin, you live in Colorado, why would you get a hotel at a convention in the state you live in? I would respond: If you would’ve waited two seconds you would know). I got a hotel because I was going to be there the following day and didn’t want to drive the half hour back to my house, and all the way back the next day. So I talked with the people who run the place and started to set up my booth for CD sellings. My booth was placed next to the headliner for that night, and the dude I was to open up for, Marc Gunn, the Celtic filker. Around show time we went to do our sound check. It took a little longer than I would’ve wanted and thus I had to cut a song from the set list. Overall the show went pretty well, I was getting some good reactions from the crowd, and Patrick and I actually had stage presence for once! All in all it was a pretty rocking weekend. I made a nice amount o’ cash on CDs, we played a good show, I got to meet the Filkstar Marc Gunn, as well as a really cool SciFi writer named Rob S. Rice who gave me a copy of his CD, and finally, I got to meet Wayne Faust of the Dr. Demento favorite Faust and Lewis who invited me to be apart of his website http://www.picklehead.com, so it was truly awesome! Wow this section is long. Sorry…

-MUSIC PROGRESS-
I’m glad to be able to say that new songs are slowly existing. My EP that I mentioned on the last update, is nearing completion, and I hope to have it out by Christmas time, if not early January. I’m re-writing and re-recording stuff for the next album to make sure it’s top notch for you fine folks. So, things are moving forward much more than I could say for the last few months, but there’s still a considerable amount to do for the album before my self-designated release date arrives. Is there a way you can help? There sure is, when I do release my EP, I need every one of you to get it, the reason I’m releasing it is to help pay for the actual CD, so please buy it when it’s all done and its awesome has been unleashed.

-MARSCON 2010-
The very great the great Luke Ski has just announced the line up for next year’s MarsCon, and guess who’s gonna be there! That’s right! Steve Goodie! Oh, right, and ME!!! If you are unaware of the awesome that is MarsCon, it’s a Science Fiction convention held annually in Bloomington, Minnesota. When it comes to comedy music or as we like to call it dementia, this is pretty much the Super Bowl. It really is the largest gathering of comedy acts put together today, and I am very glad to have procured a main stage slot. Go visit http://www.marscondementia.com for a complete list of acts performing there, and visit http://www.marscon.org to buy your tickets today!

A technical note for this year's dementia fan showcase [Nov. 19th, 2009|02:40 pm]

lukeski
Whoever is running the laptop that is playing the music files of people's background music,

Turn the auto-track-repeat OFF in your media player.

Many songs played at last year's started over 2 seconds after it was finished, which kind of messes it up both for the performers getting a proper applause & ending outro, but it's making editing for me a bitch because I want to cut it off before the repeat starts, but if I do you don't hear nearly as much applause for the performers, etc.

Just a heads-up.

Music Video idea [Nov. 12th, 2009|02:31 am]

insane_ian
Ok, so I'm working on a DVD companion to my album "n3rds0ngs". Tentatively titled "n3rdm0vies" (original, yes, i know), I'd like to have a bunch of music videos and sketches and such on it. As odd as it may seem, a song from my CD that I considered a bit of a throwaway is actually pretty popular with crowds and fans and such.

This is where you come in. I'd like to do a video for this song..."Death Star". For those who haven't heard it, it's a parody of "Rockstar" by Nickelback. The original video is pretty basic...just various clips of folk (both famous and non) lip syncing the song. Easy right? Here's the video:

My idea? Do the same thing, but with my song. The difference...well, considering how the song is slamming the "new trilogy" of Star Wars flicks, maybe have some FEN in the shots. Costumes, props, memorabilia...the whole nine. Star Wars fans, general folk...ANYONE. Non-fans can participate as well...hell, a good mix of crazy costumes and normallydressed folk would be a good mix, i think...and be similar enough to the mix of celebrities and folk of the street that the original had.

Of course, I'd love it if some folk in the dementia community would participate as well (making the 'celebrity" column be filled). No matter who you are, if you're interested in participating in this, just film yourself lip syncing the tune, and e-mail me at insane dot ian at hotmail dot com, and I'll give you details on how to get the footage to me.

Right now, there's no deadline on this, but if you're interested...let me know! Thanks.

A Serious question of Comedy [Nov. 6th, 2009|06:02 pm]

insane_ian
So, "The Legend of PRB" has been doing smashingly on the DT20...thank you all who've voted for it (two weeks in a row at number 1! Woo!). This brings about a serious question...

Many have said it's one of my best songs, musically and vocally (which for me, is a big thing, considering I'm...we'll say, not the strongest of singers). I'm currently considering sending it to Dr Demento for his show, but the subject matter is keeping me from it. Considering it's about a REAL person whom I know personally, some of the jokes may be considered a bit to "in" for the show (despite my attempt to make them as broad about general drinking as possible, it IS funnier if you know of Rob's "Party" persona, IMO) and that may keep it from being played. However, since Rob's own song "Gamer Funk" (which itself is also about the con scene) has been number 1 two months running on Dr Demento's Top Ten, a SONG about the number one artist would do at least moderately well in that setting...or so my theory goes.

What say you, friends? Should I just forgo all worries of "in jokes" and send it, or should I keep it twixt our little comedy music community? Please...any help would be appreciated.

Oh, and thanks again for voting for my songs...after doing this for 15 years only locally and without much success, to have my work be so well received is amazing, and I love you all. Seriously. ^_^

I NEED YOUR HELP! [Oct. 31st, 2009|01:23 pm]
oddaustin
Alright, so this month on The Dr. Demento Show there was no Top 10 spot for my song Vampires Suck again. The song needs just 3 or 4 more points to make it on to the yearly and very prestigious Funny 25 count down, and it would mean the entire universe to me if I could be on it.

So PLEASE go to http://www.drdemento.com/request and fill out the form to request VAMPIRES SUCK by ODD AUSTIN for the November Top 10, and please keep requesting in December as well so we can insure it gets on the chart.

If you haven't heard the song and would like to before requesting please don't hesitate to listen at http://www.oddaustin.com/music.php or http://www.oddaustin.com/vampiressuckfinal.mp3. Feel free to spread it to all your friends and tell them to request to, if you have a podcast or radio show, play it and mention that people can request, let's make a big push for this song in November!

I'm really counting on you guys, please go request so I can scratch off one more thing on the ol' life goals list. Thank you everybody in advance!

Need a room for Convergence? [Jun. 3rd, 2009|01:24 pm]

gamerchick
Hi everybody!

My husband [info]dayzdark and I are looking for roommates for Convergence on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. We currently have a room at the Sheraton with one unoccupied queen bed. Taking on two roommates really helped us afford the con last year and seemed to work out fairly well for everyone involved, so we'd love to team up with some other cool, laid-back geeks in order to defray costs for everyone.

The cost for the room would be split equally among all of us (so if one person takes us up on this offer they would pay 1/3 of the room cost, and so forth). We plan to use the room primarily as a place to sleep and shower and as a repository for my musical instruments, so you can count on having it as a quiet place to come back to if that's what you're looking for. We would ask that anyone staying with us not smoke or have sex in the room (though responsible use of alcohol will be welcomed and encouraged, and what you do elsewhere is no business of ours). We are open-minded and flexible in terms of everything else.

Let me know via comments or by emailing belovedporcupine@gmail.com if this sounds like something that would interest you, or if you have any other questions.

Dementia Radio Room party review and idea lists [Jun. 1st, 2009|02:10 am]

blastedbill
Hey all,
So now that penguicon and carrie's wedding is finally over, it's about time i did my post marscons report. I want to talk about the dementia radio room party and what i think should happen with it next year. Once again, there was some fun to have with it, but it was tons of work and didn't turn into THE spot for dementia folks to hang out in that it was in year one(07). Year one we had concerts, both planned and impromptu, we had contests, we had at least 8 dementia folks in there at all time, and we had tons of fun. It was a joy running it cause ever one was there. Alchav did his 1st concert with me as his opening act. i dare say it was the 1st "fan show case." luke, rob, nick atoms, and i think devo spice all got on mic and did songs. because of all the artists and fans loving so much getting on and singing, i decided for the 2nd year to do "dementia oke." having instrumental tunes of stuff for us to sing dementia songs. well what happened is hardly any of the dementia folk showed up and all i got was mundane folks asking to sing songs they didn't have at the main room or off disks that wouldn't play in the main room, which further drove out the dementia folk. so it ended up being me entertaining mundanes. not much fun.

This year i decided to not have much of a plan. we briefly tried dementia oke again, but it very quickly because entertain the mundanes again and we shut it down. we did have gear's triva challenge which was fun. we had the dinner in the party room which worked out much better then last year, and we had the smack down which was popular. beth and her group decided to throw a party this year with a very similar concept to ours. I didn't know how i felt about it at 1st. after running our party a bit on friday, i had some one else take over(i forget who but thanks who ever it was). our room was pretty much empty anyways. i walked down the hall to see other parties and heard ppl singing yoda from beth's room. the room was packed with dementia fans and artists singing yoda and i was like WHY ISN'T THIS HAPPENING IN OUR ROOM PARTY!!! also through out the weekend, our party and their's had several popular events. when ever their party room was full, ours was empty. when ever ours was empty, theirs was full. clearly we were targeting the exact same target audience and forcing them to split their focus. In other words, i spent a ton of time and money setting up a room party for activities we wanted to happen in our room party only to have them happen in another room party. really made me wonder why i was doing it at all. Some fun things did happen Saturday night with the devo spice video which i segwayed into a youtube watching party. but that could have happened in any room, not just what we had set up.

so i went back and looked up who's idea was if for us to even have a room party. turns out it was Emi's idea. I wasn't going to marscon 07 at 1st cause i was unemployed. several ppl paid for me to come out and i took over the room party because there was a clear lack of leadership and organization.

So i have several suggestions for the room party next year. 1st and foremost there is very little chance i will run it. i'm really getting burnt out on running things and trying to pull back as much as i can to just working on projects that only effect me. 2nd, i suggest maybe we not have a room party next year. if we do have one, i think it needs to be scaled down. perhaps dementia radio could have the left room of our 2 room set up and just have the snacks and booze n'stuff and beth and her group could have their party in the right room. that way both parties work together rather then splitting the groups focus and energy. i've heard some negative responses to this idea, so finally perhaps we just go back to our original 1 room closer to the consuite. perhaps our current location isn't good. perhaps the 2 room set up is too big. maybe the smaller room made it a more intimate and inviting space.

let me know what you all think, including you beth. if any one has interest in taking over running the party, let me know. Vlad said he has interest in perhaps running the party room next year. Thanks (:

I reviewed the most recent CDs from the Capitol Steps, Obama Mia!; Carrie Dahlby, Giant Kitten; and the Feng Shui Ninjas, Garbage Pizza on today's Bartcop Entertainment. Near the top.

The site is updated daily, so if you're not reading this today (Mon 6/1) it will be in the archives, link near the bottom.

As a wedding present, I uploaded the track info for Giant Kitten to CDDB, though as of a few minutes ago it wasn't listed yet.

Interview with Ctein re 1000 True Fans [May. 22nd, 2009|03:24 pm]

barondave
One of the big problems facing many Dementia Music Artists is how to make money off their work. Only a few are full-time musicians, but I think this approach is worthwhile listening to.

Ctein is a photographer and writer, and has been at the top of his craft for three decades. He has just recently started a new way of getting support from his fan base that might apply to FuMP musicians and others.

Interview with Ctein (mp3 30:55) on the 1000 True Fans model of artists making money, and how he is applying the model for his photography sales.

crossposted, with a bit more explanatory text since most of you don't know who Ctein is, from [info]barondave

Got Gifted Gear's tape! [May. 10th, 2009|03:03 pm]

barondave
Back at Marscon, I gave [info]giftedgear an Ascent Into Madness mix CD as part of the Exchange program. I finally got the tape. By Mad People For Mad People: The Maddest Music You'll Find Anywhere.

Haven't listened to it yet, but it takes guts to put The Velvet Underground, Tiny Tim and his own mashups in the same mix.

I have to hook up my tape player and break out the headphones, but I look forward (hear forward?) to experiencing the maddest music I'll find anywhere.

Thanks, GG!

[mood |creative]

Beth Kinderman & the Player Characters would love for you to take the time this coming weekend to drop by and sing on a track for our upcoming album, Apocalypse Blues. We need singers of all ages, genders, styles, and skill levels to join in singing two choruses of a geeky folk song about alien invasions at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 9 at the Sacred Paths Center, 777 Raymond Avenue, St. Paul, Minnesota. A free concert by the Player Characters will follow. Further information can be found here. Please pass this link around to as many people as you know. It would mean a lot to me and to this project if anybody who's a Twin Cities local could make it, so please consider taking an evening to do a little singing and have a little fun.

Let me know if you can make it! I would love to have a great showing from the Dementia crowd and to hear your beautiful voices on my record. (c:
