would anyone happen to know if there are any resources online, that would help to inform an individual about their rights regarding marijuana? with my friend just having her dorm raided for the second time in a month, i was just wondering if there was anything out there that we'd be able to read about laws and such. such as what the police can and cannot tell you, and just how far they're able to search?

Is a good place to start. However, you are asking for legal advice. Only an attorney can do that. However I am a paralegal and have heard atty's give this advice:

Have your friend read their dorm agreement. Typically, one waives rights to privacy, as well as 4th and 5th amendment search issues when your friend signed the document.

File complaints. Get badge numbers. Call the cops supervisors. Write the dean and head of campus security. Organize a protest. Be proactive. Be a hemmoroid. They will go away.

Basically anyone who lives in a dorm is shit out of luck if any authority figure decided to come in and poke around anywhere for any reason whatsoever in every case like that I've ever heard of. At my school it's the same way, if you live in a dorm the RA's and other bureaucrats can give other folks permission to come poke through your things for no reason, they can break locks, whatever.

In general, if your friend is going to do illegal things, she should go to great lengths to not live in a dorm.

I'm not 100% sure but if she's living on campus in a dorm the school is probably allowed to search the dorm for any reason at any time.

i have some common (or perhaps not so common) sense guidelines (IANAL) here, but if she's in a dorm room, as the previous posters also suggested, she's probably SOL, unless they've dramatically changed the dorm policies since i was in college...

Why is your friend's dorm being raided? Is it only because of a suspicion of marijuana usage, and if so do the authorities really have nothing better to do with their time than chase something as trivial as that up?

funny you should ask, because the county PD there was given a tip off on her 'use of narcotics'. the first issue at hand is the fact that her dorm mate likes to brag about the fact that she parties with cops and she outted my friend on smoking weed :(

Surely thousands of students smoke weed, be it in university residence or otherwise. Why are the police wasting their resources trying to 'catch' people doing it? What do they expect it will achieve?

if your friend is living in a dorm on school campus. your friend is screwed right there. cops can search anything on school grounds.
