After our long run today, a chiropractor who is a runner himself and a member of an association of sports medicine doctors spoke to us. Among other things, he said that we should take 30 to 60 grams of carbs per hour while running; he strongly recommended GU or equivalent every 45 minutes. No high glycemic foods 30 to 60 min before running, but low glycemic during that period is OK. High glycemic 10 to 20 min before is also good. I told him that friends of mine told me that I should train my body to burn fat during runs, and not to intake carbs during my runs. He said that's what they taught twenty or thirty years ago.

Other things he told us are that we should replenish carbs within ten minutes after a run; that will get them into the muscles the fastest. The longer we wait after running to intake high glycemic carbs, the more they will go into fat cells, and the less into muscles. And that we should take one gram of carbs for every kilogram of body weight during those ten minutes. And then another 125 to 175 grams of carbs two to four hours after the run.

We should also consume 1.2 to 1.4 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight every day.

Any comments on any of this?

Cross-posted to runners

Though I've spent the last few years in Boston, I'm returning to my Midwestern roots this fall for the Lakefront marathon in Milwaukee, WI on October 5th. I actually grew up along the course, but it's been years since I've run in Wisconsin and I've never raced there. Is anyone else training for Milwaukee? (Or, more specifically, have any experience with the course?) I'm admittedly excited to have my parents as a cheering section for the first time.

My Marathon Schedule Revised - Good/Bad/Whatever Idea?

Okay, so as some of you already know I went through nearly 11 weeks of an 18 month training program for my first marathon, and then I got bit by a strained right calf.

Here's what's what: I'm running again, not at full speed, but I can do long distances again. According to my schedule, I'm supposed to run 14 miles this Sunday before doing my 20 miles next Sunday, and then doing the taper. I'm thinking I'll go out and do the 14 miler and see what happens, and then if I can sustain 20, I'll attempt the marathon on August 3rd, given that nothing snaps or breaks in between.

But I'm wondering if I'm being realistic with all the time I've missed. During the week I've been pounding the exercycle and doing short run/walks. Here's the long runs I've missed and shortened:

June 15th: 4 Miles of a 16 mile run, interrupted by my injury
June 22nd: Planned 12 mile day. Ran 6 miles and hit the exercycle for 2 hours.
June 29th: Planned 18 mile day. Ran 5 miles and cross trained for a few hours.

I've also been thinking of possibly extending my 14 miles into 16, just for kicks. What I'd like to know is...

... Am I being realistic? Can I really get back into this schedule after losing this much long run time? Am I pushing myself too hard? Or...

...am I being too pessimistic in considering the idea that I can't hack it, and that it's fine for me to see if I can't manage it and still get back into the race. Or...

...I should just try it and play it by ear. Who knows if I can get it done?

Just like to bounce this plan off of y'all and see what you think.

Portland Marathon: earphones welcome

http://portlandmarathon.org/mp3policy.php

The Portland [Oregon] Marathon WILL be MP3-player friendly this year. Old news to anyone that already registered but new to me, so I thought I should pass it along.

The Portland Marathon is MP3 friendly: so, "Plug-in"

We have recently received a number of inquiries regarding our marathon's policy on participants use of MP3's while running or walking in our event. The answer is simple: we allow MP3's, iPods, cell phones, etc. The reason: we have a closed marathon course with no cars, no bikes, no skateboards, dogs or other impacting features. Our only rule is that for those using such devices...we expect they will do so in a reasonable way and use common sense. We have had no problems on the course historically when our participants have worn MP3's or used cell phones. On those few occasions when ambulances have needed to come onto the course participants see and hear the flashing lights and sirens and react accordingly. So we are officially declaring the Portland Marathon as the MP3 friendly marathon. Our motto for all this is: "Plug-in!"

The controversy in our industry regarding MP3 players and the like grows out of a questionable rule passed by the UST&F Long Distance Running Committee last December. This rule without other explanation barred nearly every type of electronic device from use by a participant in a road run or walking event. This included MP3's of all types, iPods, head sets, Walkmans and even cells phones.

It is easy to understand the use of such a rule in a club running or walking event where runners and walkers might be impacted by cars and other vehicles sharing a road on which participants are running or walking. However, if the course is closed to vehicles there are few reasons not to allow the use of cell phones or head sets.

Moreover, if those using the MP3's or head sets are doing so in a way that is reasonable and using common sense there should be no problems. Obviously, runners and walkers need to listen to announcements at the start of an event. If runners and walkers are told the course will roll up at an eight hour pace and that MP3's and head sets should no longer be used after this point we believe our participants will comply. Historically they have done so in Portland. Our event believes it has the means to be sure we can communicate with participants on our closed course or at the start.

There will be no draconian measures taken against runners and walkers who train with MP3's and want to use them in our event. Spread the word: the Portland Marathon is the "Plug-in" marathon and is MP3 friendly!
First hill training

Well, today's long run was our first hilly course, and wow, was it hilly. You can see the course map and elevation profile here.

We were supposed to do six to eight miles; I wound up doing 7.5. The temperatures were in the high 80s to low 90s; we would have liked to have started earlier, but because of the park's hours, we couldn't start much before six am. My time was 1:48:35 (14:28 pace). This course is a lot hillier than the course we'll be running at the Nike Women's Marathon, which is what we're training for.

My splits were 13:01, 15:07, 13:42, 13:54, 17:40, 14:45, 13:55 and 6:27 (for .5 miles). Match up those splits with the course elevation.

We're going to do it again, but for eight to ten miles, in two weeks; all told, we'll be doing it once a month.

Crossposted to runners

Injury Question: Adjusting a Marathon Training Schedule

Hello! I'm new in this community, and I joined just in time, it would seem...

I've been following a marathon training schedule leading up to the SF Marathon on August 3rd. It is/was going to be my first marathon.

Sunday is my long run day, and today I was supposed to run 16 miles, the longest I would've run yet, and this run would've also completed the 11th week of an 18 week schedule. I was just finishing up my 4th mile when my right calf tightened up and I felt a small pop. Tah dah! Strained right calf. I had the very same injury last december in my left calf. There is a very slight chance I might be able to run this out tomorrow, but most likely I'm going to be hobbled for a week.

Next week's long run is supposed to be a step-back week, where I'd only run 12 miles. I don't know if I'm even going to be healed up enough for that run. Given that this malady will most likely last at least a week, I am wondering if my chances of making it to the SF marathon have just taken a nosedive? If I'm up n' running again next week, how should I adjust my training schedule? (Supposed to do my 20-miler in 4 weeks and then do the taper.)

There is always the chance that this injury could stay as bad as it is, or get worse, and make my decision for me, but after getting this injury and swearing my head off for about ten mintues, (cursing the gods,) I got bad rookie angst about how this is going to affect my plans. I'm also pretty cheesed that I didn't get to complete today's long run, and how that might affect me.

When I had this injury before, I was able to use exercycles and ellipticals at the gym without any problem, so I wouldn't be totally immobile during recovery. and I've been following the Hal Higdon Novice I training schedule:

http://www.halhigdon.com/marathon/novices.html

X-posted to runners

My prior marathon times were 4:27 and 4:14, but I'm really, really hoping I can come in just under 4:00 this time around and consequently be eligible for the Boston Marathon. I've been much more consistent and planned in my training this time around, so - here's hoping I can shave off that extra time!

Hi all,

I signed up with Team in Training for the Nike Women's Marathon. I'm with Team Arizona of the Desert Mountain Chapter.

We had our first group run today. This was the first time I ran with a group other than in a race, and it certainly is much different from running alone, even though I was alone pretty much during the entire run. Everyone was either well ahead of me or well behind me. The course was four miles, and I ran it faster than I have run in any training run over two miles. For that matter, I've run faster than this only twice before; one two-mile training run in the past week, and a three-mile race this past New Years Eve. It equaled my pace in a 4.2 mile race five weeks ago.

I've been running for almost two years, and I'm 65 years old; I'm not a fast runner by any means; my pace today was 12:03 min/mile.

Hi there everyone. I'm going to be running a half-marathon for the first time this September, and i was wondering if anyone out there has any good advice as far as diet, techniques, stretching, etc. that would really help me get a good start. I'm new at this and don't really know what i'm doing. My friend and i signed up for this thing on a whim and thought it would be a great way to get in shape and do something fun, something worth accomplishing. We're both kinda couch potatoes and we really needed something to jump-start our butts in gear!! Please help a girl out! Thanks so much. :-)

Hello everyone! This is my first post in this community, and I'm on the brink of registering for my first marathon (the WDW Marathon in January 2009). I just completed a ten-miler this month and was bitten by the endurance running bug. I'm usually very unmotivated to exercise, but having a goal that requires consistent training is the best motivational push I could ask for.

I have a question for all you marathoners...has anyone ever used marathontours.com to book a race/hotel package? They offer what seems to be a reasonable rate at the hotel I want to stay at ($100/night for three nights) and a reduced "guaranteed entry fee" to the marathon ($105). I'm a bit concerned since you don't register for the race through Disney, you do it through this company, and I don't think you get to register online until September. They insist that your entry is guaranteed, though, since they go through some kind of group booking process. I don't know exactly how it works.

Anyway, they seem like a reputable company, but I've been watching a lot of The Real Hustle and am overly suspicious of potential scams. :o) Has anyone had an experience with this company? Do you all recommend I book this package (guaranteed entry + room) or should I wait until hotel rooms at this particular hotel are available to book online? The official Disney race packages are incredibly overpriced.

My biggest fear would be not registering on the official Disney site, going with these guys, and somehow not getting entry into the marathon.

Quick race report:

Martian Marathon, Dearborn MI

Lovely weather, good friends, a decently organized race, what more could I ask for? Maybe thrashing last week's incredible time (last Sunday was my fastest marathon since Alaska in 2003, a 4:44) and running my second fastest marathon ever! I did a whopping 4:36:27! I stopped at my friend Lois's place for a shower and food post race, then made the 4 hour drive home needing only one stop.

I'm not hardly sore today, just a little stiffness and a little ache in my right ankle. I must be doing something right... I'm headed out to walk in the spring sunshine today, and will probably bike most of the week, since I've abused myself with 2 marathons 2 Sundays in a row!!!

Details will be over on my livejournal in a day or 2.
Jen

It's that time of year again here in Virginia.

It's Pollen time and it's kicking my tail. I got the flu back in the 1st week of March, got better, went on a Disney vacation and felt better. Then we get back and see the sheen of green on the cars and BAM. 24 hours later I feel like someone has shove a pile of cotton up in my head.

This kills my Alaska Marathon plans, as I haven't run since that first week of March.

So, enough whining.

Does anyone have any hints on how to deal with the pollen and running? I just bought a Neti Pot and have used it twice. While it would have been great if it was a Silver Bullet, I have a feeling (a stuffy, head clogged, sore throat feeling) that I won't feel the benefits until I kick whatever I already have.

On a side note: For those who watch "Big Bang Theory",
http://www.cbs.com/primetime/big_bang_theory/video/video.php?cid=501654014
I'm not quite as bad as Sheldon was :)

Smirkin, you're not far from me.. how are you handling it where you are?
