Will they be releasing those also?

Look out!! Shueisha titles are taking over the Taiyosha rankings again this week. And this time they have practically taken over all of the shounen titles for this month. In some ways, I almost feel manga isn't shounen if it isn't Jump... But then I remember the best shounen rarely has an SJ next to it... Wait did I say that?!

Seriously though City Hunter, Slam Dunk, COBRA, Iron Don Quixote, Orange Road, Dragon Quest, Panty Attack Boy and Whistle are great but I cannot forgive Bomber Girl, Gun Blaze West and Wrestling with Momoko!! And that is why my heart belongs to Shonen Champion and Shonen Sunday 4 LIFE!!

You might not be reading too many of them now but Light Novels are coming and they are relevant. After today's news from MangaNEXT they are more relevant than ever.

Kodansha's prose magazine FAUST will be published in the States by Del Rey. Faust has alternative manga and light novel content from some interesting creators. A number of those Faust books have been on this list from Gamers over the last year. I wonder if any of them will sell that well in English?!

Oh the otaku and their hunger for media. Nanoha has been around for a while and Gakken just just started capitalizing on this property with a manga and now a light novel. With just one day on the Gamers top 10 list Nanoha (the original story) debuts at #8. Meanwhile traditional fantasy titles like Fujimi Shobo's RPG Bunko struggle to get attention. At least gaming shops sell those yellow Role Playing Game novels.

Woohoo! We got a new light novel specialist!! ROCK! Eva will likely be starting the next few weeks looking at a couple books a month or so. And given the number of releases that are available in Eigo... That is about on par with what TP, Vertical, DH, Viz, DMP and Seven Seas are releasing. I should be sending her first batch out tomorrow, so maybe those could be a regular thing on Saturdays.

Haven't seen SoftBank on this listing before. I might be wrong but I believe the Junk Force novels were from SoftBank Creative. This pub has a small cache of manga and has a number of light novels and mooks in their catalog.

Week one is Shueisha's, week two is Kodansha's apparently... According to the top 10 from Taiyosha, Kodansha's shounen and josei titles are selling... for at least that one week a month.

I'll touch this a little later but I wonder out loud... Why are the best shounen titles from Kodansha still on the table? What makes their shounen so harder to sell than Shueisha's, Shogakukan's, Kadokawa's? Some of the artists are well known. The stories are solid. Hajime no Ippo's length is scary. Oh yeah its the genres... sports, punks, comedy, suspense... The genres Kodansha pushes in their shounen mags (and in Young Magazine) are hard sells here. Will that ever change? I think it has to but it has to be a full court press instead of a 1-on-3 fast break. (A little Ahiru no Sora terminology for you...)

Lots of MediaWorks and if you look at the major light novel licenses that have been announced a good number of them come from this publisher. They offer a good mix of fantasy, sci-fi and moe titles that appeal to a wide audience.

Good show for Saibunkan Shuppan. This pub is known for their idol photobooks and fanbooks but their very first light novel is apparently doing well through the Gamers chains.

No shockers at the top of the list with a number of Viz titles; SB and SJ were represented as they should be. But at the bottom of the list are a couple titles that I am curious about. I talked up drinking manga in my last Otaku USA article. Bartender is a great example of a drinking manga and one that might rival BAR Lemon Heart on some levels. It really captures the atmosphere and the art is much more detailed. At the same time Blh is much more of an otaku series and has 1000% more nostalgia... Critical for a proper booze manga. Kiss and Fight just sounds like an awesome manga. And since it is listed here as josei I am automatically interested. I wonder if Viz would take a chance on this now that they are testing the josei waters. Hmmm.
