Save Our EDEN
I am sure Jarred will chime in about this with more eloquence but I got some disturbing news from Dark Horse today...

Endo Hiroki's EDEN, quite possibly the best title of 2007 (if it isn't then Endo's Tanpenshu might be then), is on the verge. Sadly not becauses it taking the world by storm as it should, but the title is not seeing the numbers it should get. And in this day and age that is not something any manga fan, EDEN fan or not, wants to hear.

I have never heard a comment like that made at a panel before, so for a fan like myself it really sent a message as to how much DH loves that title and how much it needs help, as well. I never want to see a title discontinued or put on hiatus and generally when they do suffer such fate fans of the series are often the last to know. This time though DH made those at AX aware and the ball is now in the fans' court.

Do yourself a favor... If you are at a bookstore pick up a copy EDEN. You will not go wrong by supporting this title. I can honestly guarantee that.

Uh, so what does that mean? Should we go out and waste more money on a title that's likely to be cancelled in the near future? Sorry, but that's moronic! If Eden doesn't sell, it just doesn't sell. A dozen more sold copies won't change anything. Eden has a nice story, but Endoh drags it out so much that I have all interest in it. Good riddance, I say!

I can't help but wonder if this has something to do with DH and their commitment to promoting manga titles properly. They're getting a bit of a reputation for releasing a title with little fanfare but lots of 'mangasphere' excitement (because of their risk-taking/shrewd licensing), don't do much to promote the books and then cut them off without much comment.

It's interesing/cool that they publicly made note of this cancellation danger in this case, but DH is sortof worrying me. At a really high level, I wish they'd market manga better and pick price points/packaging/production costs that allow them to stick with an entire series 'til the end. I know that's not realistic in all cases on the financials/sales side, but ... do you think titles like Drifting Classroom from Viz are breaking even? I hope so, but I'm not sure... but I have a very strong sense that we will see all 11 volumes regardless. And that makes me not think twice to plunk down my $$$.

Just the ramblings of a dude that hasn't had his morning cup of coffee yet!

If EDEN goes, I'm quitting manga altogether. I'm tired of all my titles getting canned. If the US manga industry isn't able to sell to my tastes, then I'm folding my hand and moving on. This is getting ridiculous.

If Dark Horse believes in the title enough, the will continue to publish it. They should learn from book publishers or film studios. Some properties are not necessarily profitable, but are more about "prestige". In other words a film company might put out tons of commercial material designed to rake money in, but also put money into smaller films or films they consider artistically important which if they make a profit, will be a surprise. Same for books. Some authors are allowed to continue publishing, not because they add millions, but because their work is "important".

They should change their name to ADV. If they cancel Eden, then along with Octopus Girl, they will have gotten rid of two of my favorite titles. It would make me think twice about buying any of their titles.

Howabout rather then complaining anonynmously, people actually go out, and *BUY* the manga. If news of this gets spread wide enough, there's a chance it could make just enough difference for Dark Horse to change their mind.

It's saved domestic comics from cancellation before, there's no reason it can't save a manga title from it.

If you want to see a title publishes, especially if it's a niche title, you HAVE to support it, rather then sitting around, waiting for them to magically publish the entire series so you can go buy it *someday*. Put your money where your mouth is.

Agreed. I fell behind a while ago, never found a copy of vol. 4 and just figured it'd turn up eventually. Clearly that's not the case so it's time for me to stop thinking about it and go and order it.

Thank you. You've said it much better than I could have.

Yes, please, if you like a book enough, buy it. If you REALLY like a title, get your friends to buy a copy.

If you can't find it in-store anywhere, order it online. This will be especially important during the Naruto Tsunami starting in September. Booksellers will have limited shelf space to rack books outside of the best-sellers and will most likely limit (if not just skip) orders of marginally-selling books.

Obviously, I would only be complaining about the impending hiatus because I already AM buying the series and reading it as each volume comes out. Do you even read the title?

You're talking to someone who bought every SuperMangaBlast from the very first issue to the absolute end, left hanging on assorted series in the process. I know exactly where you people are coming from, cause I've been in this exact same situation myself [and this is why if I see a series I like, I try to get it ASAP, and tell as many people as possible about it, so it won't get canned. Like say, Shadow Star, 3X3 Eyes, Witch Class (X_X poooor Witch Class), and many other a series in my grave yard. That said, READ SAVER DAMMIT. IT'S LIKE IF FUSGIGI YUGI'S MIAKA WERE POSSESSED BY GOLGO 13!]

But I still won't say no a series if the end looks unlikely- because even just a volume of a series translated is better then no volume at all. While I hadn't checked out Eden as of yet, this is inspiring me to check it out, and I probably will be ordering either the first volume, or the newest volume shortly [I imagine sales on the newest volume'ld help better]. This has moved it up on my priority list..... I know it's kind of lame to say this despite not having gotten the series, but as someone whose supported overlooked series and has many an unfinished comic/manga/anime series, I can say it's a lot less lame then declaring "I'm not going to buy it, this sucks" or "They shouldn't of even bothered bringing it over"

And y'know, sometimes a series gets saved. Look at ADV bringing some of it's titles back into print. Look at Tokyopop bringing back the titles they dropped. Look at CPM restabilizing and relaunching Full House. Look at how Dark Horse brought back 3x3 Eyes 4 or 5 different times [sure it never quite made it, but we got a decent chunk of the series out of it]. So long as a decent amount of fans keep talking about the series, spread the word on the already published volumes, and keep interest alive, there's always a chance.

That's a real shame, I don't know how it's selling in the UK but we already have our own edition here from Titan( I wonder if they count those sales?). That said I hope they are pitching it to SF fans too, it reads more like an SF novel than a manga. I wouldn't have picked it up if i hadn't been sent it to review.
