SDCC 2006 - Viz Media (audio up!!!)
If you thought that TP was so-so in San Diego, Viz was equally as disappointing. Now one thing about Viz is that more often than not fans find out about new releases through Amazon or Diamond before they have chance to announce them. I don't know why that is but Viz came to SDCC with a few titles to announce and with more details about current titles. So if you expecting a dozen titles, sorry!

Nothing earth shattering. But hey Viz is Viz. They are the biggest publisher. According to you and your peers....

Best Publisher

VIZ Media

BEST SHORT

Sexy Voice & Robo
Kuroda Iou

BEST MANGA

Fullmetal Alchemist
Arakawa Hiromu

They are award winners!!! Almost a complete sweep from Viz. But they are used to that now if Bookscan has anything to say about it. Honestly, I was not a part of the voting process, so I have to say right now the final vote was close for most categories but in the end Viz was just better. That's been their MO since I began reading their works almost 20 years ago. Great anniversary for Viz and let's see if next year will bring more of the same (even if FmA is officially out as the incumbent - ahh term limits).

VIZ Media: Anime/Manga
12:30-2:00

— Join VIZ Media representatives Anthony Jiwa (director of marketing, home video and publishing), Cammie Allen, Megan Bates (managing editor, Shojo Beat manga), Annette Roman (managing editor, manga) and others as they discuss new acquisitions for 2007, new product releases, and highlights for the rest of 2006, and answer all your otaku questions. Plus, you’ll have a chance to win VIZ Media products and prizes! Room 9

Any whozzle, like I said Viz was in their usual Viz mode. Anthony Jiwa held a tight ship going through their slides which covered both anime and manga. Everyone of the editors present was allowed time to discuss their new titles - Annette Roman (Viz Media/Signature), Megan Bates (Shojo Beat), Cammie Allen (Shonen Jump). Shojo Beat celebrated its first birthday. Annette talked a bit about her global manga. And mixed into the manga lovefest, four titles were announced.

Brave Story is possibly one of the hottest properties in Japan right now. Scratch that, it has been for a little while now. I remember after Raijin ended, I saw the mangaka for Revenge of Mouflon working on a version for COAMIX. A few other versions have been made since. And that trend has continued many times over - movie (GONZO), manga, video games.... Viz has the novel by Miyabe Miyuki which chronicles the life a young boy who has to enter a fantasy realm to save his mother. If anyone can break through to Coamix its Viz (if you get that, grab City Hunter and Angel Heart on the way out okay).

Shakugan no Shana (or Red Eye'd Shana) is seeing double. Viz will be releasing both the manga and the light novel of this hot MediaWorks title (man my crystal ball is good). Definitely a cute fun action title that fit in perfectly with the now defunct Action imprint. Viz revealed that the anime has been picked up by someone else. No news yet if they have picked up Shakugan no Shana 0 and Shakugan no Shana S (two additional novels from the same property).

Dragon Drive is the inspiration for the anime that was released by Bandai a few years back. A little kiddie for me but should fall into the SJ lineup easily (playing Thursday Night Publisher I would love to see that in SJ magazine).

Viz is kicking but and they are growing everywhere. And while many of their franchise titles are winding down - RK, Ranma, MI, DBZ, Hot Gimmick.... - they always seem to have things lurking. Brave Story and Shana look like titles poised to be huge. FMA HUGE if marketed properly. Lots of crossover for both titles and so many ways to market these makes them very good properties for a brand conscious company like Viz. So while quantity might not equal CMX or Del Rey, at least those two titles will be making noise next year.

Some more news has Gentleman's Alliance coming with a never before seen poster (US exclusive). Slam Dunk is no longer in Viz's plans according to Anthony Jiwa. Pokemon Dungeon will be released in Nintendo Power magazine. And new titles Claymore and D. GrayMan have been doing very well for their SJAdvanced line.

Oooh, a poster. I remember there was a Gentlemen's Alliance poster with an issue of Ribon from last year or so (it was a furoku). I wonder if Viz will use that same poster, or if they'll put some other art from the series on it.

Also, didn't Lovely Complex (LoveCom) get announced at the SB panel? I read on ANN that it did...

Yup... but give me time. Expect that news from me tomorrow along with the audio recording featuring an interview with Matsuri Hino and her editor Ide Yume!! Man it was great being up in the front row for that.

Well that's quite disappointing, but I had a gut feeling Viz wasn't gonna announce anything big.
Looks like we'll have to wait for the next amazon treasure-hunt.

Anything noteworthy about upcoming titles they mentioned?
Or were you able to check out Yakitate?

You know, don't take this personal but Brave Story and Shana are big. Sure they might not be to people's tastes and they are not as established in the West now but when the merchandising machine for these pick up they will be the next big thing for Viz. There are projections for these to be the next FmA (I won't kid myself about putting these up at Naruto and Death Note level).

And even though I consider myself a little on the hard-core side, while I don't rave about Shana (the novel intrigues me) I know it was a competitive pick up. Brave Story with its tie-ins I believe was the same. So business wise this is big news and even if they didn't announce Azumi (one rumor that was swirling around here because the movie was screening here the night before their panel) these two continue to keep Viz on top. Even more important is that neither are Shueisha/Shogakukan titles. Viz is taking that weight as a "have" in this industry to pick what they can.

Great 20th birthday present if you ask me. And about Yakitate, I bought a copy on Wednesday. I flipped through it since I am indifferent about the title but its going to be a listener gift in the future. Stay tuned for that.

Well, while that all might be true; as you are indifferent to Yakitate, I am indifferent to those. Thus I can't honestly consider these aquirements from Viz, "Big".

Eh? What's that mean? @.@

The current rule is that once a book/series wins a Yomi they are retired from competition. The only thing these titles could be nominated for in the future is a lifetime or special award.

The rule does not apply to publishers.

Some complain about the templatey style of Viz production and some even hate they come out with books to fast (pocket drain) but I have no complaint really. They do a good job with a crazy variety of books.

I'd personally prefer if they released something like Monster in a prestige "pimp-flap" (word stolen from my fried) format like Del Rey but hey, cheap is good too right?

Buso Renkein and D-Gray Man are 2 recent titles I am enjoying a lot right now!

Ed. The Slam Dunk news hurts. Sama Shuppan needs to get started!!

Ah well, as long as they maybe release REAL, I'll be okay. Time to pick up the rest of those Singapore English versions.

Heh there were but nobody with them was able to make it out of the Building alive...

I am really spent right now so I'll be frank. Once again there was no event. They were handed out at their respective panels. So these three were at the Viz Media panel and I gave Svetlana Chmakova's to her editor at TOKYOPOP today. There were pics taken at the presentations. Today Viz has placed their awards in their display cases (VERY COOL, especially the FmA case where merchandise and books flank the trophy) and Lillian put DRAMACON's under its respective poster in their huge booth.

I've got pics but I won't get to them until I am home with my Mac.

I'll see what I can do about an "event" next year with more time. I don't know who to talk to at SDCC about that but I am sure it will happen.

I am so glad to hear about the winners.
I also enjoyed the Viz audio's and I didn't realize that Brave Story is under their Shojo Beat line.

And they basically confirmed that they have the Nana anime in their own way.
