Maki Side Dish #6 - 2006 Yomi Preview Show
San Diego ComicCon is comic central USA. Anything and everything comic happens there. Comics are made. Comics are sold. Comics are honored. Over the last few years manga has been a huge part of the culture here. But who honors all that manga that is being announced and sold?!?
The MangaCast might not have a hall to present their Yomis in like the Eisners do. I don't even think most of the publishers are even aware of the whole project (even though a few industry reps were involved in the process). And when I wanted try to get the winners involved, after contacting them I felt most of them didn't even take us seriously about the idea. As of this moment, one winners has not even given us time for an interview and photos (no replies at all to our email... Artists!). Nevertheless, like many firsts the Yomis will go on kicking screaming knowing next year will be different.
Friday will be award's day and the acrylic will be handed out to the well deserving winners. I was shocked to see how well that worked out with the MangaCast anniversary. Great way to start the second half of the manga year.
Tonight, before I fly off to San Diego, Jack Tse gives listeners his take on the MangaCast Award nominees in his 2006 Yomis Preview. He might even give you all his picks. I wonder how close the man will be. The votes are in and tabulated. The trophies are made. The winners have been notified and all that's left is handing the blocks of acrylic and sharing the winners with you the readers that made this happen (couldn't have done this without you especially with only 8 weeks time to get everything from nominations to delivery).
Oh and next year, remind me to make Jack a Yomi. I got to thank him for doing this.
