Awards Season Continues... and we need your help!
Any who, you might be wondering about the subject line. Well, I came up with the crazy idea to create an annual manga award of our own. Sure Kodansha, Shogakukan and others can have their own fun dishing out awards left and right but that's all the way across the ocean. And the Eisners don't have a manga award. So why not hand one out of our own at the biggest comic and manga con in the US?!
Sounds crazy?!
Yeah.... but this is the mangacast we do a bi-monthly curry romp.... Man, Jarred how did we come up with that??
Okay, so here is where I need your help:
I need nominations for the following categories and I need them within the week, no later than Sunday May 28th. (EXTENDED!!!! I want to send out the nominees to our "judges" by no later than May 31 and you judges will be getting an email soon....)
Give me three for each (if possible):
All manga nominations are for graphic novels between July 2005 and June 2006.
Best Publisher
North American publisher of Manga - licensed or original; English or Spanish
Best Manga Series
Series released in North America has to have had at least two volumes released between July 2006 and June 2006
Best Short
English translated or OEL one-shot (one volume title like the Smuggler or Sexy Voice & Robo), anthology collection (ie Comic Party from CPM), collection of 4 panel manga (Azumanga Daioh, ToriKoro or Gloom Party)
Best Global Manga
Original title not made in Japan: So yes that doesn mean manhwa, manhua, german manga, canadian manga, filipino manga, american manga whatever. (yeah there might be controversy but whats an awards competition without controversy right)
Special Award
This award goes to the most important thing that happened to manga in the last year (July 2005 and June 2006).
So say Shojo Beat Magazine launching or Del Rey announcing mature titles or TOYKOPOP's BLU manga line or the Success and hiatus of the blog Love Manga maybe even just the licensing of a specific title like Loveless. Just something that made an impact on manga that should be remembered.
Okay sounds corny and like a waste of time but I think this could be a cool idea. Leave your nominations as comments here at the LJ (not the email cause I don't want duplicates). And have fun!
Next year, I will be formally sending email to publishers for their own submissions for the awards but since SD ComicCon is only two months away being pressed for time and wanting to make this a thank you for a great year I thought the first should be something we would be involved in (initially it was just the MangaCast crew but now this nominating process is open for everyone). Let's make this a tradition we can build on from here on out!
