Volume #139: NY ComicCon 2006: ICv2 Graphic Novel Conference - Manga Panel

ICv2 hosted an industry panel with the shakers and makers of the North American graphic novel industry yesterday.

This is the audio from the...

ICv2 Anime and Manga Panel: Looking forward

A panel of key graphic novel buyers from multiple channels will discuss what's selling and why, how the market's changing, and what kinds of products will grow the market in the next three years.

Moderator:
- Milton Griepp, ICv2

Panelists
- Mike Bailiff: Senior Vice President, ADV Films

- Liza Coppola: Vice President, Viz Media

- Al Kahn: CEO, 4Kids Entertainment, Inc.

- Mike Kiley: Publisher, Tokyopop

- Dallas Middaugh: Director of Manga, Del Rey Books

- John O'Donnell: CEO, Central Park Media

- Tomoko Suga: Senior Manager, Foreign Rights Department. Kodansha

Listen to Panel Here:
As this is an industry panel the guests will discuss not only manga but anime. Generally speaking because of the impact manga had on Graphic Novels, the panel will discuss manga quite a bit but the converstation will be much more broad than that market. There is a lot that is covered here from sales in 2005 to projections and the plans for collaborations in the future. Definitely a must if you are interested in either industry.

I apologize if the audio is funky. I was not able to plug into their audio mixer (couldn't even see it in the room anyway) since I arrived just as the panel began.

This audio was recorded by Ed Chavez on Thursday Feb 23 at 2:50p Eastern for the MangaCast.

Those were some damning comments by Al Kahn, I actually laughed out loud. "U.S. kids don't read.", so manga will never be a big industry here?? He started going down a more relevant road with digital content, but I think he is actually trying to fit the squre manga industry peg into the round anime hole, to use his phrasing. He only knows using TV video to sell merch, completely different markets.

It was interesting hearing those comments on how they tried digital manga in Japan, and it hasn't worked for them yet.

Also, it is great to hear the reps at the end talk about "mature" manga and how they have a responsibility to put out those type of titles for readers that are growing up and keeping things fresh. And Tomoko Suga talked about how Kodansha wants to get out their mature and classic titles in this market. Very exciting!

Loving the podcasts

I just love how 4kids announced a new anime but has left mew mew unfinished.

Also I found this article on C21Media dated Feb 6, 2006:
Viz uses Bleach to clean up in teen market
Japanese animé and manga licensor Viz Media has acquired its first title aimed at the older teen and young adult demo.

Know anyone with access to the site? Maybe some info about the anime?
