De-anoning obviously, but since I smelled wank in the comm, I had to offer my three cents and a nickle.
Oh, first post by the way. Hey y'all, my name's Tofubeast, I'm a member of BAAU (Bay Area Artists Unite), I'm heading back to Hawaii for the summer, and I'm planning on joining y'all for that time wether ya like it or not!
Well, unless I get too annoying. Then you have every right to boot me.
I'll be coming to Oahu on the weekend of the first week of May--and I want to meet you guys.
I'm going to be working for the Honolulu Academy of Art this summer, and since you guys are on my list of artist comms that I'm going to visit...I'll be seeing you all very soon.
So from talking with Moosubi, I got excited about working with you guys and creating art together.
Then after seeing the two journals complaining about infighting/wank in the comm, I kind of got deflated about it. However, I still want to work with you guys. I believe Ian from BAAU knows of you guys, and I think Alfred (a twu) might have mentioned that he knew you, so the fact that some BAAU dudes have contacted you guys a few times is a rad thing.
Now, keep in mind that I'm not a member of your guys' circle, and I wasn't around for the issues, but I would like to offer a solution, as I believe that there are people who want this to be a healthy artists' community. If I'm wrong about anything, call me out on it, but this is an honest outsider's opinion.
Apparently some people were worried that the life had gone out of the comm, and that the artistry was disappearing. Or rather, that the motivation was disappearing. Then people started arguing amongst themselves about how this artists' comm had fallen on low times, how no one was getting motivated and how new members were getting scared away.
My opinion is that the members of this place need a common goal to strive for at the moment so that MangaBento can be united as a whole. For instance, BAAU is kind of small, but we're very dedicated to what we do (even lazy ol' me--but that's a different story) when it comes right down to it. Hawaii doesn't offer the opportunities California has, so it's hard to get hyped about something if there's no goal, like a convention or a fair, but what MangaBento could do is find a project to work on as a whole.
For instance, a book. A book is a major undertaking and involves lots of work, but it can come together once the artists unite in their goal. It forces people to push themselves and really put their best work out there.
Wouldn't it be cool to see the range of talents in Hawaii all gathered together, in one big celebration of sequential art? Wouldn't that be totally awesome? C'mooooon.
I noticed you guys have exhibits for free in the Academy. For someone who's studying art, that's an amazing privilege to have. Gallery space is a covoted thing. If you can make a themed exhibit every time, that would also serve the same purpose as the book idea.
Moosubi mentioned having a one day comics workshop sponsored by MangaBento during the summer. I say that there should be several. This is also a "common goal" project. Hell, I'd be willing to teach 'um. I could even try to contact Audra and Scott of "Nemu-Nemu" fame, or talk to Deb Aoki of "Bento Box" comics, if she's in Hawaii and not back in CA at that time. Anything, anything to make this even more awesome.
Anyway, TL;DR, I want to work with you guys and believe in you all. I am looking forward to coming back home just to meet up with you guys and draw with you. I want MangaBento and BAAU to have an alliance of awesome that will span the Pacific Ocean and get local kids interested in art again.
In short, I would like to see MangaBento unite to become our ally artists. And I am a pretentious git who types too much. XD
