 | 11:47 am - folk of the wood going out of business!!!!! hey kids, i was wondering if there was a genius out there who could help me out. i'm a newbie, ready to pick up my first mando and start learning. i did a lot of research and found that folk of the wood was the shop for me, and the johnson ma-120 is what i wanted. due to some financial upheavals, i put off ordering. but yay economic stimulus...i called FOTW today, credit card in hand....
...only to find out that they're going out of business, closing shop, and no longer shipping instruments! sad!
is there another online store that you would recommend? i liked FOTW because you could call them up and ask questions and they did a quality set-up to your specifications. any other stores out there like that? or do you know of any local stores in your area that i can call and talk to personally and that will ship to LA?
*sigh* i've been wanting this so long....damn you, recession.

 | 04:46 pm - Ah, introductions... Hey everyone! I am a novice at best (my primary instrument is guitar) but I am really enjoying learning on the Fender I play every day (my experience is that it's been a pretty good model to learn on) and a couple years ago I inherited a very old mandolin that's in great shape and has been in my family for a long time. I saw this community so I thought I'd say hi and join! Hope to hear many interesting conversations :-)
Love and Cheers, Kai

 | 03:52 pm - Irish Rock Band forming There's an Irish Rock band (The Pogues/Flogging Molly/The Tossers) forming in Orange County, CA (USA). We're looking for a mandolin player... Now, I play mandolin but not well enough to play and sing at the same time.
If you are interested or if you know someone who is interested let me know.
And for the record, we're looking for fiddle/accordion/banjo, too.

 | 06:09 pm - We ride with kings on mighty steeds. Ahoy, all.
I've recently become interested in mandolin. I've been looking to buy one as I have played a few that my friends own. I've been looking for mandolins on musiciansfriend.com. I have around $300 on my hands at the moment and I've read reviews on the Fender mandolins, but some have said that the Rogue mandolins were just as good or better, and for far less money.
As a bass guitarist, I haven't heard many good things about Rogue bass guitars so I'm a little skeptical about the quality of their mandolins.
Help me! Thanks :] Current Mood: curious Current Music: Tenacious D - History

 | 12:41 am - chords Hey everyone. I am a beginner mandolin player, and I also play the fiddle. I find picking to be very easy, and chords as well. I just have a hard time remembering the chords. Is there any good website that anyone knows of where they show you all the chords. Sort of a guideline that I can print out to use while I am practicing at home. | 07:43 pm What's the neatest and/or 'least predictable' form of music/group/genre/etc you've incorporated mandolin in or heard it incorporated in?
(And yes, I realized that was quite possibly the most poorly formed sentence ever written, but I'm having trouble with words and think you all know what I mean anyhow. :P)

 | 10:44 pm - How to Learn Mandola? Hello Everyone,
I am new here and I was wondering if anyone would be able to advise about any books or teach your self systems that I could use for learning to play the Mandola? I have aquired a mandola rather unexpectedly as I inherited it when my uncle whom I was very fond of died. It seemed he wanted me to have it because I had enjoyed listening to him play so much as a child but he also said that I must learn to play. I would love to learn but as there are no Mandola or mandolin teachers in my area I am left with the option of self teaching. Any suggestions at all such as Mandola players I could listen to or web resourses would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

| 10:49 pm - Pickups Hey folks,
I was wondering if anybody had some good suggestions as to good acoustic pickups for mandolins. I just got a new mandolin that sounds a whole lot better than my old mando-in-a-box, and I'd like to get something better than what I've been using. My old pickup is an cheap stick-on type that was only about ten bucks. Anybody got any suggestions on what works or where to find more info? I play in a band so I need something that will allow me to be heard over those noisy guitar-player types. Thanks.

| 09:34 pm Any tips for mandolin travel on airplane? Is it a small enough instrument to pass as a carry-on? What is the best way to ensure that nothing happens to it (especially if I have to check it)? Etc. Thank you. :)

 | 05:09 pm Last night after much debate I decided to part with 30$ and go see Mike Marshall and Chris Thile do their mandolin duo thing. To put it mildly, they were fantastic. It was just them on stage sitting in chairs and playing mandolin. Mike also played mandola and mando-cello during the performance. It was a rare opportunity to see such world class musicians up close and later meet and talk to them. They were both very friendly and outgoing but declined the invitation to the after party in room 154.( photo )

 | 11:43 am Hi.. I'm a new player. I come from a musical background dominated by the upright bass for the past 9 years and electric bass for 5 years prior to that. Fueled by a personal discovery of The Ditty Bops (<3 <3) and Nickel Creek over the last year, I opted to take the plunge and learn mando. I can't seem to get enough of it though it's been quite a change.
So, Hi. My name is Tess. I'm a professional pin-up model and side show artist, though I think the mandolin is taking over.
I inherited a 6 year old Epiphone a-model mando from a friend who "just happened to have a couple lying around", and I can't seem to put it down for too long.

 | 04:48 pm Hi!
Just got my mandolin today and frankly, I have no idea how to tune it. I realize that there are 2 strings per note and they are supposed to be played at the same pitch, but is one supposed to be higher than the other? Which one? i have worked on the low G and as it sits, the left string is 1 octave higher than the right... can somebody tell me what the heck I'm supposed to be doing before I mutilate this poor beautiful instrument? HOW DO YOU TUNE THIS THING?
Thanks!

 | 10:14 pm - Radim Zenkl Spent the morning at a workshop by Radim Zenkl, and then caught an afternoon concert. A lot of talk about technique. I came away with some things to work on. Nothing to revolutionize my playing, and probably nothing that would make for any readily noticeable change in my playing or sound, but still some things to work on.
The concert...well, I guess I'd say that Radim's playing is more introspective than I care for. Sounded borderline New Age to me. He can pick the hell out of the thing when he wants to; the highlight was when some locals joined him on stage, and he played some swing. I'd hoped to hear him play some other instruments more. He played a mandolin, and a single-strung mandola. The mandola was a beauty, I must say. But I wanted to hear his mandocello, and his bouzouki, and I was really curious to hear his nylon-strung mandolin.
But now I'm home, and I'm working on some stuff, and that makes it worth the time.

| 10:19 pm - question Hey, have any of your ever had this problem: My strings are acting weird. My E-strings in particular will play fine when in an open position but sound out of tune and flatter when I hold down the strings. I thought it might be my strings, so I restrung the mandolin with a new set and it still does this. I recently had the Nut at the top of the neck replaced and I thought this might be contributing...If anyone has had a similar problem or can steer me towards a solution, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.
