"What's he saying?" Jack demanded anxiously, but the doctor would not be rushed, continuing his conversation with the Brazilian merchant, who gestured severely toward the side of the Surprise.

Jack caught embarcação, which he thought was "ship" but could have been "fleet," and canhão, which he was fairly certain referred to a cannon. Then came something that, from the merchant's gesticulation, meant "gargantuan," and another that might have been "fast" or "fleeting."

"Have we fallen very far behind, Stephen?" Jack whispered.

"If you would be silent for a moment, I might be able to tell you," Stephen hissed in reply.

(Shame you couldn't mention the pencils in Jack's mouth, 'though. I'm just sayin'. Nice detail, is all. Yeah...)

Hee! Those were his dividers (charting tool). I actually cringed the first time I saw the movie when I saw that he had them in his mouth, cuz DAMN, you treat your dividers like they're god. You come to feel like you're defiling them just by *touching* them.

Oh, I'm sure Jack has plenty of practise in defiling his dividers.

...you know, I was thinking of those dividers they put up between the cabins (I am sure they have a name but I'm not on AIM to ask Skud *g*), not those things in his mouth! Even so, I must once again plead innocence, as I meant INK stains, and chuckle at the workings of your mind...

Oh, of course. Yes. I knew that. ;D
Honestly, all these damn ship-terms were designed just to screw with people, I swear. :D

I'd be able to tell you what those were called if I wasn't drunk. When I drink, my vocabulary is generally reduced to the bare minimum. But these are the chart dividers (for anyone who hasn't seen them): http://www.starpath.com/catalog/accessories/pics/dividers.jpg

Wait! Do they call those between-cabin things "partitions" in the books?

Yes! Thank you. You're drunk and I'm overtired...

OK, I checked, and it's definitely "bulkheads" for both the permanent and temporary partitions. Not that there are very many permanent ones in a man of war. But anyway, I'm reading "The Reverse of the Medal" right now, and they definitely "strike down the bulkheads to make a clean sweep fore and aft".

Falconer's dictionary of the marine (late 18th century) says:

BULK-HEADS, certain partitions, or walls, built up in several places of a ship between two decks, either lengthwise or across, to form and separate the various apartments. Some of those which are built across the Ship are remarkably strong.

Original! I like it! I hope [info]lupippin gets to see it. She so loved images of a Brazilian map and hearing her native tongue in the film.

I am simply writing every cannon-related drabble that pops into my head, that the Cabin Boys might win virtual rum and I might get virtually drunk. The irony being that I don't even LIKE rum. I had no idea I was so competitive. *g* I looked up the Portuguese in an online dictionary and it may very well be inaccurate!

Well, I like rum, so if you wouldn't post quite so much, the Powder Monkeys would win and I could get virtually drunk (Not that I'm not actually quite RL sloshed at the moment).
