4+ questions

Crossposted all over - my wife and I moved up to Manchester about a month ago, and now that we're settled in...:

1) ...I know the seasons have already started for some, but are there any baseball/softball leagues forming/looking for players in the area for 20-somethings?

2) ...any political groups for young conservatives who aren't aligned with the Republican Party?

3) ...any book groups of any sort people can recommend?

4) ...any musicians? At all? Anywhere?

If anyone can recommend other boards or lists or communities that may be able to assist in this, let me know. Thanks in advance.

434 Lave Ave & Its Neighborhood

[I also posted this on GoffesFalls.org, which is a great resource about historic Manchester.]

I've always been intrigued by the four-story brick building at the corner of Lake Ave and Hall St. and by the surrounding neighborhood. The building is named the Dearborn Memorial Hall. An inscription dates the construction to the late 1800s or early 1900s (I'll make a note next time I run by). The first floor is almost entirely bricked up, but one can imagine big windows and a grand facade beneath. You can see a picture by searching Manchester's property valuation database.

The neighborhood seems like it was a distinct village at one time, with the old Empire Theatre and a cluster of restaurants, markets, and services surrounded by homes. It still has all these things, but now it's a small part of Manchester. One has to stop and think about what it once might have been.

When I first "discovered" the neighborhood, there was another large, brick building across the street from 434 Lake Ave. It may have been a firehouse. In 2000, I moved from Manchester to Vermont. When I moved back in 2004, it was gone.

I would appreciate any information on this neighborhood, its buildings, and its history.

Map of the Neighborhood

Ugh...

So I'm watching the news this morning before heading off to work (well, Dale is, but I'm getting ready to go. They're talking about this Jeep crash story where five, 14 year old kids, took a Jeep, went joyriding and crashed into a house.

During the story they interview this person (click for pic). Her big concern, that there was 5 kids, and only 4 seatbelts, so they couldn't have been wearing their seat belts and that's illegal. So out of this list, please pick the biggest problem...

1. Skipping school
2. Stealing a car
3. Driving under age
4. Driving without a license
5. Speeding
6. Crashing into somebody's house
7. Not wearing a seatbelt

Oh yah, not wearing a seatbelt is high on my list.

(X-Posted in my personal journal)

Apparently, there is a measure before the state
legistlature in New Hampshire to amend the state
constitution in such a manner that it will prohibit
gay marriage. This is really irritating in New
Hampshire because I thought/hoped that this was
an it-couldn't-happen-here state. I don't know
why, exactly, I thought that.

More info is available here: http://www.nhftm.org/

To all:

It has come to my attention that there is a hearing in the near future to amend
the New Hampshire State Constitution in such a way as to ban same-sex marriages
in the state. I live in New Hampshire because it remains one of the bastions of
individual rights and responsibility within the union. While some restrictions
are necessary in a civilized society, the denial rights to a non-criminal subset
of society is abhorrent.

It may be cliché, but the Live Free or Die motto of New Hampshire is one that I
believe in. As long as an individual or group does not infringe on the rights
of another, that person or group should be allowed to conduct their life or
business in the manner that they see fit. Lawmakers now seem bent on creating
laws to restrict the rights and responsiblities of individuals and this trend is
extremely unsettling.

I implore you to vote down this measure and leave the State Constitution as it
stands. Ruling bodies have becoming increasingly invasive within the life of
their constituents and it would be heartening to see New Hampshire stand in
defiance of the current rash of nanny-governance that has broken out across all
levels of government of late, to see New Hampshire's law makers show faith that
their voters are responsible enough to make adult choices, rather than having
those choices legislated.

I've included below a list of points that you most likely have seen in regard to
this issue but which nonetheless stand as valid argument against this proposal.
I thank you for taking the time to read my words on this matter as I feel it is
symptomatic of the overall trend to limit the freedoms of the general populace.

Yours sincerely,

Mxxxxx Sxxxxx
Nashua, NH

1. This Amendment would permanently take away the existing rights of New
Hampshire citizens to seek redress from their elected Representatives.
2. Basic rights should not be subject to a vote. Amendments to the
constitution should expand rights, not limit them or single out a group for
different treatment.
3. It is already against the law for gays and lesbians to marry in NH. It is
unnecessary and inappropriate to amend the Constitution to address marriage.
4. The Constitution is supposed to protect everyone. It is wrong to use it to
hurt people.
5. Even if I oppose marriage of gay couples I do not want to see the
Constitution amended to permanently take away existing legal benefits that gay
couples may enjoy.
6. The New Hampshire House of Representatives and Senate have much more
important things to address – economy, health care, and others. We strongly
oppose their taking the time to consider amending the Constitution for purposes
of electioneering.

Those of you who know me know that I never send out stuff like this, but this is
an issue that means a great deal to me.

There are a couple on this list who may not see eye to eye with me on this
issue, but I'm taking the chance that you might. It's not a question of whether
or not gays should marry - it's a question of whether or not the state should
make that determination. In that regard, I state firmly, NO.

There is a trend in this country toward nanny-governance that alarms me and
should alarm anyone who values their freedom and right to make choices and
accept responsibility for their own actions. While the issue at hand may not
affect any freedoms that you might care to exercise, the next matter to come to
a vote could.

I've included, at the end of this forward, a copy of the letter/e-mail that I
forwarded to the list of contacts on the website below. Feel free to use it,
modify it, forward it...

Thanks for your time and effort in this matter.

Mxxxxx

If you're reading this entry and you live in New Hampshire, please consider contacting the parties listed at the website above.

Hope this is allowed, if not just delete and I'm sorry.

I'm looking for a roommate for Manchester. I'm very reliable, I get help from family with rent while I'm in school. I'm a student at UNH Manchester and work part time. I'd prefer someone with similar interests but at the very least I'd like someone who doesn't do drugs. I like to drink a little and have friends over, but I'm not a huge party girl, and I'm a night owl but I am respectful. I have two amazing cats and would either love a room already open or to find an apartment with someone. If anyone is interested please e mail me (applicantattack@Hotmail.com) or reply back. Thanks!

The Breaking, based out of Manchester NH, is looking for a vocalist and guitarist. We all have pro gear and pro attitudes and are looking to fill our line up ASAP to begin playing out.

WHAT IS THE BREAKING-
The Breaking is currently made up of 3 members, Bass, Drums & Guitar, all with a combined playing experience of over 25 years, and about 3 years of steady stage experience each. Our influences are Iron Maiden, Slayer, Death, Children of Bodom, Dream theater, Megadeth, Anthrax, Sepultura, etc. We have lots of material, and are looking to get back on the road as quick as we can. Once we are on the road we are looking to do 2-5 shows a month.

WHAT WE NEED FROM A VOCALIST-
*the ability to Growl, Scream, and yell
*Singing Voice a HUGE PLUS!!
*Very creative lyric writing skills
*GEAR: Not necessary, We've got a PA. Bring a mic if you want.

WHAT WE NEED FROM A GUITARIST-
*solid Rhythm/timing. Able to play to a metronome.
*Gallops, Harmonies, alternate picking.
*speed and precision.
*GEAR: Half Stack, 2 guitars (D standard, drop D)

for both:
*Easy going personality
*Able to give, as well as take suggestions.
*some financial responsibility is expected of everyone in the band. (room rent)
*We'd prefer to keep the age group in the 20's.

At this point we've been concentrating more on melody than we are
on making our songs with ever time signature in the book. Think Iron
Maiden, Children of Bodom, Slayer, Death.. Probably not Mushuga,
Black Dahlia Murder, etc.

If interested we request that you go to our web site and listen to the music we have posted, then feel free to contact us to set up a try out date.

Website
Myspace

Ryan@theBreaking.net
603 361 1087

Hey guys. I am sure by now we have all heard about the airplane that crashed through our Manchester Walmart. Pretty scary stuff! Glad that no one was hurt other than the pilot, and that he is okay. Walmart is supposed to be opening again today, but I was told by someone who worked there that there was jet fuel all over the place and they were going to have to get rid of all the food due to health codes. I don't know what's goin on with that. Have a good day everyone!

NO MORE BAINES

w00t!

Thank god, it's about time..

I didn't like him for two main reasons.. One, during the last election he was suppose to meet a reporter and his opponent. He showed up THREE HOURS late, and refused to even acknowledge the existence of his opponent in the room. Never said hi, never shook his hand, talked to the reporter like he wasn't there. That -really- rubbed me the wrong way.

The other thing is during the campaign this time he tried to take credit for the Verizon Arena, the thing that really helped jumpstart downtown. But, when it was being proposed he was totally against it, and tried to fight it. Way to take credit for something you didn't want after it was shown to work.
