| Bar/club/pub room hire recommendations? |
[06 Jul 2009|06:49pm] |
I'm planning on having a birthday party in September and want to hire a room somewhere, as my flat is too tiny! I've only been living in Manchester for a year so could do with some advice...
It definitely needs to be within a short walking distance of Piccadilly, as many of my friends will be coming from outside Manchester. I'm thinking Northern Quarter or somewhere around Whitworth St/Portland St, but is there anywhere which does private hire on a Saturday night? I'm guessing there will be about 40-50 guests.

| Long shot? |
[05 Jul 2009|02:55pm] |
THis may be a long shot, but does anyone know a song that was in the charts reasonably recently, and did quite well- it was reasonably unusal in that it was almost like an old english hymn style vocals, without sounding old fashionned. Male singers I think.
Cheers!

| I want to DANCE! |
[02 Jul 2009|09:39pm] |
|
Im looking for a dance class in manchester. I dont mind what it is except I dont want to do anything that needs a partner. I have looked at Sunshine studios, but im hesitant as I am an extreme beginner, physically, i wont be able to do anything that involves much strenght or uber fitness. And I want something relaxed in atmosphere. Anyone tried Sunshine and can review? Or recommend anywhere else that does classes? Does the uni do classes through the summer? cheers folks

| Dual Fuel |
[18 Jun 2009|12:36pm] |
Hello people,
I'll be moving in to my new place on Saturday and I need to get hold of a dual fuel supplier; gas and electricity and I've no idea who to go with. I've had a scan around and the cheapest seem to be NPower but they also seem to be the worst for estimates and generaly a pain in the arse to get hold of to sort things out.
If anyone has any input on this it would be great, I've also heard that if you pay monthly by Direct Debit it can reduce the payments.
Cheers in advance!

Where can I buy a masquerade mask in the city centre? Street names/specific directions would be much appreciated, I moved up here a few weeks ago but still get lost on a daily basis! Thanks x

| TOMORROW IN MANCHESTER! LOVELY INDIE/POP/PUNK GIG! |
[15 Jun 2009|09:55am] |
TOMORROW! TUESDAY 16TH JUNE 2009!

The Real Collective presents;
LEMURIA (east coast, usa) The return of the lovely power-pop trio return to Manchester, almost two years after they first stole everyone's hearts and made everyone fall in love with their cute, downright adorable blend of punk and slick indie power pop. Now releasing records on Asian Man (including their most recent LP, 'Get Better'). Just, seriously the sweetest loveliest people making the most perfect music. Excited? You fucking bet. No venue changes, this is at Retro Bar. You got it. http://www.myspace.com/lemuria
SURRENDER (west coast, usa) Awesome catchy and message-carrying pop/punk from San Francisco. Taking cues from old peace punk like Crass and Chumbawamba and modernising it into an even more accessible and meaningful manner. If we're giving more contemporary clues, imagine if Fifth Hour Hero were making records towards the more- political-than-twee side of Plan-It-X. Ex-Crimpshrine and current- Onion Flavoured Rings, on Thrillhouse Records. http://www.lastwhiteflag.org
BEAR BONES (hull) New band from t'other side of the Pennines, playing great melodic punk rock with the time-tested and proven win-fest that is intertwining boy/girl vocals. Lazy comparison would be This Is My Fist maybe? But it certainly wouldn't be anywhere near a bad thing if that was how they actually sounded. http://www.myspace.com/bearbonespunkrock
GET SERIOUS (manchester) Mika Miko meets the Descendents, maybe? Shouty vocals, dancetastic riff after riff, flitting between anthemic melodic punk and short, jerky jangly not-disco disco beats. Ex-Postcards From Wakanda. http://www.myspace.com/gettingprettyserious
HOT WASPS (manchester) The continuation of local scrappy pop heroes Lion perhaps, but with drawn influences from a little bit o'thrash, a tough of prog noodlin' and a penchant for all things pop and punk. http://www.myspace.com/hotwasps
at Retro Bar, Sackville St Manchester.
7pm - £6 please (two US bands to pay, sorry!) 14+

| breakfast |
[11 Jun 2009|01:20pm] |
|
Hello all!
I moved to the Manchester area in February from Canada and will be here for another year and a half. I'm loving it so far but I'm having some pretty big cravings for a good American-style breakfast. Bacon, sausages, hashbrowns, pancakes, etc. I know I can just cook it, but it's not the same. Does anyone know of any restaurants, pubs, etc that serve a good American-style breakfast?
My stomach thanks you. EDIT: I should say that the pancakes are really the key part of this. English pancakes are not what I'm looking for, sadly they are too crepe-like. I am missing thick, sort of doughy pancakes, preferably with lots of maple syrup...yum!
But keep the suggestions coming! I love breakfast in general so will definitely check out some of the places you recommend! An English fry-up isn't exactly what I'm craving, but it will do in a pinch.

Hi. I'm going to go to Manchester again in July for my graduation. I still have no idea where to stay though. Because I'm going with my mum, hostel is out of the question.
Could you give me recommendation of hotels which are not too expensive as I'm going to stay for about a week there? apartments/flats are okay too :).
Much thanks in advance :D!

| breakcore nights? |
[29 May 2009|12:44am] |
|
are there any regular nights in Manchester dedicated to breakcore, IDM, ravecore etc.? shit like Venetian Snares, Duran Duran Duran, Sickboy, Shitmat, Hoonboy, Otto von Schirach?
not gonna lie, I'm pretty much a newfag to the whole nightclub scene, but I fucking love breakcore, so if there's a regular night dedicated to it somewhere, that'd be right up my street :)

Best place to drink cocktails on a sunny day with friends? Bonus points if it's got a nice outdoor space.
I know about Pure Space already but have a feeling it's right in the middle of the Eurocultured festival...

| Cross processing slide film |
[18 May 2009|02:53pm] |
Afternoon all,
Can anyone tell me if there's anywhere in city centre that will cross process slide film? I've tried Jessops and Boots in Stockport, but haven't had any luck. Should I just be sneaky and not tell them it's slide film when I hand it over?
Cheers!

Does anyone know if the Pet Shop Boys show next month is sold out? None of the websites whether it's sold out or not. I'm having no luck on Ticketmaster (big shock!), but I'm wondering if it's because I'm trying at off times..
Thanks!

Hi there,
Does anyone know if it's true whether or not Scu 2 is charging £4 and distributing tickets to let people in to watch Manchester United-Barcelona in the Champions League Final?
If so, does anyone know what the number is to get tickets (as it doesn't appear to be online!) or if there are any left at all?
Thanks,
Jeff :)

Where would people recommend going for sushi in Manchester? I'm looking for a resturant to go to for an evening meal rather than grabbing a lunchtime snack!
