Hello. I am at my wits end with a clueless young male friend of mine. Does anyone have recommendations for websites that cover feminism 101 material? I'm talking about really basic, everyday stuff (as opposed to theory), such as use of the word "bitch." Thanks.
Armed only with spray paint and feminist knowledge, womyn and feminist allies marked some locations in Columbus where rape has occured with the words "Someone was raped here."
Please donate to "Bitch" magazine! They need 40 grand by October.
We've already lost so many magazines- ROCKRGRL, LiP. Kitchen Sink, Stay Free, and a host of other independent mags that at one time seemed to be flourishing! And I am sad about the loss of every one of them.
After they disappeared, I learned of their losses...not via my local magazine shop/bookstore owner, but via an article in "Bitch" magazine!
"Bitch" has offered the ultimate in feminism: USEFUL articles by/for/about girls and women and LGBT, and yes, even the men that love them such as the supporters of this community. From its letters to the editor, to the last page, dubbed "Annals" (usually concerning retro examples of pop culture, which is always fun), "Bitch" is responsible for some of the most important, tenacious, humorous, and insightful culture commentary magazine articles in history. Everyone from bloggers to bell hooks have had their works published in "Bitch" for over ten years. Everything from women of color in the tech sector to women who are into sci-fi conventions have been covered, plus articles that focus on racism, music by women, and mommyhood are covered on a consistent basis. Within the first year I read it, there were spreads on the green movement, voter fraud against women, female comedians, and how the threat of terrorism is biased against women. Articles about women in politics to women in the comic book industry to women in Palestine.
All without those annoying full-page ads for stuff that makes a woman feel like she isn't enough without said product being advertised to her. All donations to "Bitch" are tax deductible, and it is a non-profit organization! This means that besides no big, ugly ads that waste space, paper, and clutter the mind, that Bitch doesn't have any money. For much more information, see this post. Bitch and those other magazines mentioned aren't in trouble because interest has waned, they are in trouble because our economy makes it hard to support arts and education and society isn't persuaded to kill reliance on gasoline, so the cost of shipping anything has skyrocketed.
As we feminists know, Bitch is the type of publication we cannot afford to lose. I save my issues for my potential future children. They are especially precious to me in today's political and social climate. I am constantly referring back to them.
Countless authors, musicians, movies, artists, news, and bits of political information that fly under the radar but are so necessary to know about if you're a woman or (know any women) have been offered up on the pages of "Bitch". Babeland, Lunapads, Essence, Etsy, BuyOlympia, and $pread have all been but a few of the must-haves in my life that were introduced to me via "Bitch" magazine. Please donate whatever you can afford.
Subscriptions help, but right now what they need is cash cash cash.
If Bitch moves to the web, poorer people without time to go to the library, or those without internet access, or those without a paypal account or credit card will be affected, not to mention those of us who just prefer the quaint charm of paper when we read our favorite publications.
Some of you here may heavily dislike The Huffington Post. For this article, try and leave your distaste for Arianna aside and realize this piece employs direct quotes in proper context from multiple sources. It is completely, 100% accurate.
In November 2006, then gubernatorial candidate Sarah Palin declared that she would not support an abortion for her own daughter even if she had been raped. Granting exceptions only if the mother's life was in danger, Palin said that when it came to her daughter, "I would choose life."
At the time, her daughter was 14 years old. Moreover, Alaska's rape rate was an abysmal 2.2 times above the national average and 25 percent of all rapes resulted in unwanted pregnancies. But Palin's position was palatable within the state's largely Republican political circles.
Now that she's John McCain's vice presidential candidate, Palin's abortion policy (among others) is undergoing renewed scrutiny. The Alaska Republican has long declared herself pro-life. And her credentials on the topic make her the belle of the ball among religious conservatives. But Democrats and abortion rights advocates say her stance, specifically her unwillingness to grant her own child a choice to end a pregnancy induced by rape, is drastically at odds with public opinion -- even among many Republicans.
"This is absolutely outside the mainstream. Even in South Dakota they rejected [outlawing abortion in cases of rape] in '06 because it has gone too far and everyone can identify that in a case of rape or incest a woman should have the chance to make the decision with their family or doctor," said Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro Choice America. "Women voters are going to reject both her and John McCain, and I think we see it specifically because we reach out to Republicans and independent pro-choice women. They live in the suburbs and exurbs. They are very much part of the mainstream America. And woman in general will reject that ticket."
Palin makes no secret of her abortion views. A member of the group Feminists for Life, she told the Alaska Right to Life Board in 2002 that she "adamantly supported our cause since I first understood, as a child, the atrocity of abortion." In an Eagle Forum Alaska questionnaire filled out during the 2006 gubernatorial race, Palin again stated that she is against abortion unless a doctor determined that a mother's life would end due to the pregnancy. . .
While Palin's positions have drawn the ire and concern of the pro-choice and progressive community, they are largely -- save abortions in the case of rape -- in line with John McCain's own stances. The Senator is against federal funding of birth control and sex education. He has called for the overturning of Roe v. Wade and received a zero rating from NARAL. Once, aboard the Straight Talk Express, McCain was asked if he supported the use of contraception or President Bush's abstinence-only education program to stem the spreading of AIDS.
"After a long pause, he said, 'I think I support the president's policy.' Does he believe that contraceptives help stop the spread of HIV? After another long pause, he replied, "You've stumped me."
I thought people in this community might be interested in this. It's a new political webseries from the producer of the Sundance winning political documentary American Blackout.
It's edgy, sexy and very political with an obvious liberal and feminist slant. The main male character is a male feminist. We're an all female run production company but we have had the support of some very awesome men.
the first three minute episode is up at www.feedseries.tv
and here is the trailer:
If you are in a lot of lgbt communities you may have already seen this...sorry...I'm in a lot of lesbian communities...ha ha
The Gender Public Advocacy Coalition is pleased to announce the release of its 2008 GENIUS Survey in partnership with Ernst & Young.GenderPAC works to ensure that classrooms, communities and workplaces are safe for everyone to learn, grow and succeed.
The Gender Equality National Index for Universities & Schools (GENIUS), GenderPAC’s most recent effort to end discrimination and promote awareness, encourages colleges and universities to recognize the benefits of a GenderSAFEtm campus - supportive equitable and protective for all students. Choosing to participate in GENUIS sends a strong public statement that bullying or discriminating based on the race, sex or gender of a student, faculty, or staff member is not tolerated at your institution
Fill out the survey at:www.gpac.org/GENIUS2008survey, and make sure that we have data for as many schools as possible. Your voice will help us continue to work towards a safe and welcoming environment for every student.
While we greatly appreciate the interest taken in GENIUS by students, staff and faculty at academic institutions outside of the United States, at this time GENIUS is only able to track schools based in the United States.
I could expound for a long time on how much I hate them, but I found this in a past post on one of My other blogs:
"it never ceases to amaze me at how people judge based on this intrinsic belief that we all exist for each other's approval. and dont even get me started on women's magazines. ive never read such utter distructive crap in my life. honestly. way to go in supporting womankind. every article is written in a way that sements the social opinion of a stereotypical woman. we dont all live to be thin and adored. we dont all fall apart cos some guy who cant appreciate a woman leaves us. we are not all self hating, desperate damsels in distress so stop feeding us this crap as if we are!
i hav more than half a mind to start a magazine that ends the distructive and totally WRONG opinion of women. and its women doing it to each other! where is the magazine for chicks who know better?"
I recently saw a post on a LJ Feminist community of UK girls asking if there was a good UK feminist magazine.
Now let me just say one thing. I consider myself a NEO-FEMINIST. And I call it this because I am PRO-WOMEN and NOT anti-men like the majority of people think Feminism is about. Also, the more I delve into Feminism, the more I realise a lot of it is about political issues and thats totally cool cos a lot of politics need changing to include women and not relegate them to "just women so they dont matter as much".
But thats a whole other ball game.
Feminism to me is about liberating the minds of Women so they start realising what they are about and whats the biggest educator of Women in the world? Magazines. And every single magazine is utter SHITE! 101 ways to please your man in bed. 23 creams to apply so you look better in order to attract a man. Shoes and lingerie that will truss you up to please men. Its like these magazines are written by men. But they are not. And what does THAT say about Women of today? We are all STILL living in this patriarchal idea of what Women should be - as servants to men. And yet, there are so many men who get off on strong, independent, enlightened, liberated Women. Men WANT Women to be the strong creatures that we are. Men WANT us to do our own thing. The biggest attractor for men is NOT the size of your breasts, the colour of your eyes or the length of your legs, its CONFIDENCE and confidence cannot live in a place where there is only self-doubt which is shoved down our throats in every face cream, lingerie and sexual prowess article in our magazines.
More than once I have fantasised about starting a magazine for chicks who dont relate to what we are being fed. And I DONT want it to be a "Feminist" magazine as such. I just want it to be PRO WOMEN, supportive, a magazine that shows you that you are just fucking perfect as you are, that you dont need a million creams and a knack at deep throating to be a successful human being.
"Girls and women suffer the most harm from a culture awash in misogynist pornography, but boys and men are hurt, too. It is important to discuss this hurt both for pragmatic reasons, and out of genuine concern for these boys and men. In order to stem the tide of cruelty, callousness and brutality toward girls and women that is now mainstream fare from the porn industry, men and boys in sufficient numbers will need to make the decision to stop paying for porn magazines, videos, and Internet porn sites. Some men will be motivated to give up their porn habits as they develop a greater sensitivity to the damage that eroticized cruelty does to girls and women – inside and outside the porn industry. But altruistic concern for harm done to women can not motivate anywhere near as many men and boys as enlightened self-interest. In other words, if they can be shown that porn hinders rather than facilitates a healthy sex life for men, there is at least a chance that enough men will reject it to truly make a difference. But unless heterosexual men perceive that they have a personal stake in a sexual culture that is not dominated by the cartoonish version of sexual fulfillment created by middle-aged businessmen in window-less studios in the San Fernando Valley outside Los Angeles, it is hard to see how the current trend toward greater acceptance of sexualized brutality will be reversed in coming generations."

A month or two I decided to start my own blog at Blogspot, to focus more specifically on feminism and how it relates to men. I read a few other male-feminist blogs (namely Hugo Schwyzer and Feminist Allies), but I have had trouble finding more of them.
I was wondering, what male feminist blogs do you all read?
But I just read this op-ed in the Daily Mail about the serial killer in the UK who killed five prostitutes, and the article was just so offensive! I'd be interested to hear your opinions on this one...
While I am all for a male pill, I must admit being wary of this one. Also, WTF is going on with the "if men can’t remember to take out the garbage, will they remember to take the birth control pill? " Thanks for the negative generalizations, MSNBC, but next time I'll pass.
Saw this article on another person's LJ, thought the community might be interested. It's a good look at a male's changing attitude, and about realizing the social effects of the personal choices.
On Monday, my fraternity, Delta Upsilon, made the front page of The Badger Herald and, like most instances when a Greek house appears in the newspaper, it was not for an especially auspicious reason. The impetus behind the media coverage resulted from the publication of a picture featuring members of the house in another well-known periodical: Playboy Magazine.
