5:55 pm - Asian Women Blog Carnival #3

fantasyecho
Hello folks. It seems a bit quiet here for the last little while. So I thought I'd have a little poke and announce that I will be hosting the 3rd Asian Women Blog Carnival =) The call for submissions can be found here. The theme of this carnival is the intersection of culture and sexism. Considering the SIS vs. PAS dust-up in Malaysia, I would very much like to hear from my fellow Malaysians on what sexism constitutes of in Malaysia.

I would greatly appreciate it if you could please spread widely, too, as this carnival is for all Asian women and allies. Otherwise we have a ton of American-centric blog posts and that's no fun! XD

Mods, if the post is off-topic, please feel free to delete!

7:56 pm - Halal Chinese seafood?

dimension_view
What are good halal Chinese seafood restaurants around the Klang Valley (preferably nearer the KL center itself or near Ampang)?

Btw, has anyone been to PJ Hilton's Toh Yuen restaurant? How's the food there?

12:42 pm - 10 Worst Countries to be a Blogger

scorpiojerm
Came across this:

Burma is the worst place in the world to be a blogger.

Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, and Egypt have emerged as the leading online oppressors in the Middle East and North Africa.

China and Vietnam, where burgeoning blogging cultures have encountered extensive monitoring and restriction, are among Asia’s worst blogging nations. Cuba and Turkmenistan nations where Internet access is heavily restricted, round out the dishonor roll.

Full report here: http://cpj.org/reports/2009/04/10-worst-countries-to-be-a-blogger.php?utm_source=BnATodayTweets&utm_medium=BnATodayTweets&utm_content=BnATodayTweets&utm_campaign=BnATodayTweets

12:24 pm - It's betting time!

karcy
Tomorrow is the Big Day! Bukit Selambau, Bukit Gantang and Batang Ai will be going for by-elections!

These by-elections are big! It will determine if Najib has the mandat rakyat to perintah or not. After losing to PAS in Terengganu, it is very important for BN to secure wins in these elections, otherwise it would look extremely embarrassing on Najib and the BN-led government.

The BN machinery is all out to secure votes this round, to the extent that even Mahathir has been brought into the fray! Meanwhile, the Pakatan is not taking any chances either and throwing in their full force, especially in Batang Ai, where they hope to make headway in the Land of the Hornbill.

Who do you think will win in these locations?

Also, if you were betting* during these elections, how much money would you stake on your bets?

7:30 am - LJ icons

karcy
This has nothing to do with Malaysia, but since this place is low traffic...does anyone know where I can get Livejournal icons for 'feminism' and 'human rights' topics? I prefer text-based icons, and I've Google'd and searched the interests section on Livejournal and haven't really found anything I liked.

5:02 pm - Malaysian acts on MySpace?

divabat
Does anyone know of any Malaysian bands, singers, actors, TV/radio/media stations, comedians, burlesquers, freakshows, whatever anything creative with MySpace profiles?

I've got a chunk of metal bands but that's about it really.

10:39 pm - Pecah Lobang documentary

fantasyecho
Did anybody make it out to see the screening of Pecah Lobang? It's a documentary of transexual Malay-Muslims in Malaysia. If anybody managed to make it out to see it, I'd be interested in a review.

Thanks!

EDIT: Turns out the filmmaker isn't in Malaysia anymore. You can still buy the film from Pusat KOMAS, 40-A, Jalan 52/18, 46200 Petaling Jaya. Or even online from Kinibooks (it's one of three short films in a DVD from the Freedom Film Fest 2008, and it has BM and English subtitles).

Many of you might have seen the Oscars on TV recently. Here is a great article in malaysiakini about Astro's inane censorship protocol. Just thought would share.

10:44 pm - Arabic classes

dimension_view
Hi,
Does anyone here take or have taken Arabic classes before?

Where and how much? I'm living in the Klang Valley, btw, so any recommendations around that area would be much appreciated.

My knowledge of Arabic has pretty much rusted due to neglect, so I would like to start at the beginner's levels.

Thanks! :)
