my favorite kind of books are historical fiction I just finished Helen of Troy by Margaret George and I also read The Autobiography of King Henry VIII by her, she's a really good writer.

Hey,
Can anyone identify the story that had a part about the gates through which only a couple in true love can pass, and if it's not love hey both die, so they have to take that risk.  This story/myth/something sound familiar to anyone?
Thanks

I am looking for good books narrated by teenage boys. Like "Hairstyles of the Damned", "Cather in the Rye", and "Perks of Being a Wallflower", particularly.  Any suggestions would help.

Thank you in advance!

I finished reading this yesterday. Tell me your thoughts!

I finsihed this today, tell me your thoughts!

I will not say anything about Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows because I don't want to spoil anything, but as for the sisterhood, I really like the books! They are cute and very motivational and uplifting in a way.

Maximum Ride 3 by James Patterson, anyone have anything to say about it? I am about to read it next week. My buddy just finished it and said it was just like #1 and #2, which is definately believeable, hahah.

attention harry potter fans: do not go to madradstalkers; someone has leaked a spoiler. also i hear that ontd has one as well.

ALSO I WOULD LIKE TO TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO BEG YOU GUYS TO NOT TALK ABOUT THE BOOK WITHOUT A LIVEJOURNAL CUT. if you don't know how to make one of those, it is like this:

< lj-cut > place text here </ lj cut > <---- only, don't have any spaces within the brackets.

a livejournal cut will allow other people to skip the entry and stay blissfully unaware :)

THANKS EVERYONE :)

Hi! I'm new here...

If someone could help me figure out what book this is I'd be sooo grateful.

In elementary school (4th grade, more specifically) and the cover is grey-ish and has a native american girl on the cover. The title was.. her name I think and her name was some native american language for "Running Girl"
She got captured from her tribe or something and then she escaped and she ran all the way home (thus the name, running girl).
I remember when she was going home she found this like.. burial ground and there was a skeleton is a child and a dog.
& for some reason I remember she would eat dried buffalo.

I've been trying to remember what this book is for YEARS and I can't remember :(

i started reading a book long ago in someone's loft apartment, but i cannot remember AT ALL the title nor the author. it is one of those type books that sorta runs along the lines of kurt vonnegut (however you spell), it may even be his work. i believe the book might have been placed, about, and pressed in LA, California. this is bits and pieces of what i remember of it:

(a "homeless", dirty man staggers in a convienence store, probably in LA somewhere, he uses a hundred-dollar bill to pay for some hotdogs or something)
the clerk goes, "oh, welfare has been good to you this week, eh?" something like that.
the clerk ends up giving the stinky man a ride home. the man vaguely points the way with his finger while the clerk rolls down the car windows, saying: "you stink".
it turns out the stinky man is actually a famous rock star or something, he sobers a bit after they get to his mansion...

that's about as far as i got in it. it has been three-four years since i read that bit. does anyone, by any chance, know what book i am talking about?

thank you, darlings

i found this pretty interesting. for a while i have always wanted to read the 100 greatest novels list before i die, and so i was looking through amazon and decided to order at least one off that list and finally get started on this idea. i was suprised by some not on there, and that i have not heard of some of these authors even. i also thought i would have read way more than i have. here is the reader's list (as opposed to the board's list) of the 100 greatest novels, from 1-100.

how do you match up? )

"that's the difference between using and abusing: when you use drugs, they are indeed useful; they help you get through. by the time you are abusing, its just about the drugs; addiction is its own thing. i do drugs because i do drugs- doing drugs makes you want to do more drugs- and that's what makes it an addiction. it feeds on itself, it is a closed system, it has no external logic at all. in that way, it's like true love: at first you fall for the person because of this or that. there is a shopping list of reasons: he has an interesting job; he smiles like tom cruise; he is dapper like cary grant; he can teach you how to drive stick without losing his patience; when he looks at you, it's like the world has stopped. but once you're in love, you can't remember how it got started or why: you are in love, you are lost in the p erson and the relationship, the relationship is its own reason."

"none of us has good judgment when it comes to love, and love is hard to stop."

"for the first time in my life i understand the value of good manners: i understand that you must be polite to all people at all times because you never know what difficulties they may be struggling with at that precise moment, you never know how the slightest wrong thing that you say could be the last little iota it takes to send a person who is just barely holding it together into a complete breakdown. the one little mistake you make, bumping into someone as you walk busily across a crowded sidewalk, shoving a woman aside as you push your way into a crowded subway car, spilling red wine on someone else's white shirt because you weren't paying attention as you made your rounds through a cocktail party- you never know if that misguided gesture might not be the reason some poor lost soul ends up in the loony bin. anyone can be that delicate"

I was about 50 - 60 pages away from finishing my book, and it was beautiful outside today, so I grabbed a blanket, a bottle of water and walked to the park and read. It took me about an hour and a half to read the rest.

Anyways, the book:
Inkspell

A conituation of the story Inkheart. Its a fantasy novel that wraps your mind around a book inside a book. Most characters capture your heart and it keeps you on your toes. There are a few losses, some unfortunate, some not so unfortunate. I think it is a great series so far! Read it before the movie comes out!

Hello sweethearts, I am so aggervated. I cant think of the name of this children's series I read as a child. I cant remember enough about it to find it in google so I thought some of you ladies would be able to help me.

All I can remember is that the books were kinda thin and about this group of kids that would go around solving mysteries and all this supernatural stuff. There is a witch in the town & one or two of the books is all about her. There is a kid named 'watch' because he wears like 10 watches on his arm or something with all different times around the world. I know in one book Watch supposedly gets sucked in some kinda black hole or vanishes or something and I cried because I thought he was dead.

*sigh* have any of you any clue what book series I might be thinking of?

Tolkien theme [

]

[ music | The Clash ]

In keeping with the theme, I am going to 'discuss' my relation with Tolkien.

When I was about seven, my dad would sit my and my sister down and read us the Hobbit. He read it many times, as we were fascinated by it. I personally never understood most of it, but there was something about the story that was so interesting and held my insanely short attention span.
The previews for the Lord of the Rings film trilogy came out, and seeing as how I had always enjoyed fantasy, I was very interested. I used to scour the library for fantasy books, and the good ones were few and far between. I never even thought to actually read the Lord of the Rings... until I saw the movie. I rushed home, pulled out the books sitting on a shelf, and began to read. I was mesmerized. I was a very boisterous kid, but did not have many friends so I filled my time reading the books. After reading all three books, I became a 'Ringer'. Yet another of my strange phases. Anyway, I started dressing up for the movies, learning Elvish (Sindarin- of course), and reading everything Tolkien I could get my hands on.

I did grow out of that stage, but I must say that Tolkien filled up many of those days of sitting around feeling lonesome. Of all the books I read, I believe that Mr. Bliss and On Fairy Stories, are the ones I most remember and love.

This theme reminds me that I need to read more Tolkien. While I did grow out of the fantasy stage/obsession, his books are still well written and highly entertaining. What's your Tolkien story?

I've never posted before but I am interested to see if anyone would have any recommendations.

I'm looking for Psychology books. Just to study and learn about them. Psychology and the human mind really fascinates me! I won't be starting school for a while so it would be nice if anyone has any recommendations!

Also. I have a few books people have recommended but I'm looking for books to really give my mind a challenge. Not something that was cute and was a breeze to get through. Any suggestions??

Thanks!

And also. I know this place has a book swap of it's own but I belong to a website (http://www.bookmooch.com) and it is really great for book swapping! I've received and sent tons of books, and I definitely recommend it! It only costs you the money it takes to send out the book which is what? Usually around $3 for the envelope & shipping.

Has anyone here read it? Does anyone have an opinion on it? I'd never heard of it before I looked at this semester's syllabus & this book was on it.
