ohhhhh my goodness.

so, the other day i decided to go to sally and get some stuff to try and rid myself of black hair.

i got a blondish dye, mixed with 40 developer.

it took to only my roots.

and that happened.

soooo i tried to buy a dye close to my natural color (which is a dark brown with red undertones) just to cover up the roots...

aaaaaaaaaaand that happened.

HELP ME. what do i do? at this point i think my options are to either suck it up and dye my roots black and continue to have black hair...

or wait until i can afford to have it stripped and re-dyed professionally.

if anyone has any other ideas that don't include shaving my head, let me know, PLEASE.

first of all, if your color is black, it is going to be very very hard to get out of your hair. no color is going to remove that much artificial pigment. the reason it only worked on your roots is because that's the only part of your hair that doesn't have black color on it. to do anything to the black color, you're going to have to bleach it. as for the red-brown, roots tend to go lighter and warmer than you want because of the heat from your scalp, so you have to account for that. plus it would be next to impossible to put a color over blonde roots and have it match the dark ends.

the best thing i can recommend is going to a reputable beauty school for color correction. still might add up, but it will be a lotttt cheaper than going to a salon, and there will be instructors to help. you could have them do a strand test before paying for anything, just to see if they can even lift the black out at all.

DONT GO BACK TO BLACK!

I would recommend heading to a beauty supply outlet (a reg. drug store won't carry it) and asking them which colour you should get as either a toner (just mix it with 10 volume to take the orange/red down to a more neutral brown... something you can live with as it is either a)growing out or b)will tone down the red while you are hunting for the proper colour), OR seeing if the have a filler you can use (which is what most stylists will use to 'fill' the hair when going from light to dark). Basically, that will prep the hair to be coloured and rebuilds the pigment that you lost during the bleaching process.

One you have something tollerable, you can either go to a pro to get it sorted, or try the bleaching route again in a few weeks. Try NOT bleahing any new growth as it is virgin hair and will take way faster. Try to stick with it JUST on the dyed black area and then add to the roots once/if the dyed section is lighter than your roots.

Your hair is going to hate you for this, so invest in some serious conditioner between bleaching/dying.
(I had black hair for near 8 years and it was a long process getting even a few shades lighter).

Good luck!

when i get tired of permanent black i dye my roots dark brown with temporary colour until the black fades enough to cover with something else (you can put another colour on top sooner if you don't mind using one of those permanent colours intended for dark hair).

uhm. this process usually takes me a couple months, but i prefer it to trying to bleach it (and colour strippers have NEVER worked for me, on any colour).

can you recommend any bleaching kits and/or conditioning treatments?

i used a blue powder bleach with 30% volume. i applied it twice in two days and then added a toner and got my hair from dark blue to white. it is EXTREMELY damaging, but if you avoid heat for a few days and spend good money on a treatment you will be fine.
if you're not confident and don't know what you're doing I reccomend going into a salon and paying a professional to do it.

last time i dyed my hair black, i went from that to light brown/red with blondish highlights (at a salon) and that worked the first time too. i just thought maybe i'd find an easier way, but that kinda backfired as you can see lol

dude, I stripped my hair myself from black using Color Oops. Worked like a charm to get to a medium orange color. Waited a week, and bleached the rest out to blonde, then conditioned the fuck out of it. Good as new. Best twenty bucks ever spent.

doesn't color oops only work up until like, 10 days after dying it? my hair has been black for like, at least a month. will it still lift the color?

Color Oops will work no matter how long you've had the color on. It smells like ass though. But it works great! And the reason hair turns green is because you need to tone it out. Or not use that brand of dye. Because in boxed dye there is metallic salts and bad things in there that will either turn your hair an undesired color or just ruin your hair.

And when you're messing with color/bleach, a salon is the best way to go. If they ruin your hair they WILL fix it. Most times for free too. It's a lot cheaper than going to Sally's every week to buy more and more stuff that just doesn't work for your hair.

I used this bleach:
http://www.sallybeauty.com/Clairol-Kaleidocolors-Lightener/SBS-320970,default,pd.html
And got the reddish/amber color you see here in my hair(I WAS just going for that section):
Photobucket

That was after about 3 passes(I was not going for blonde,I was going for that color, because it is closest to my natural color),but I started with the dark brown/black you see on the rest of my head.
I decided to try the neutral one instead of the basic bleach I used to use to try and get black out, and the results were much prettier IMHO.
So you see,it is VERY hard to get black out,but it can be done,in stages,by oneself.
I could have kept going and gone blonde eventually without frying my head. There is minimal damage to that section.

Once my hair is even longer I will be going blond and red/amber,but I am letting my roots grow out for that and not trying to bleach the black out.
Good luck!

I had black hair a while ago.
I think I took the longest route possible to get rid of it:
I bleached it once, went dark orange, so I put a temp purple dye on it (Directions violet)
Then after a month or so I bleached it again, went to a light orange, so I dyed it pink (Directions flamingo pink)
Then after a month or so I bleached it again, it went kinda yellow, so I either bleached it again or put toner on, I cant remember.
The ends of my hair wouldn't bleach to blonde, so I dyed them blue for a while. Eventually just got them cut of coz the horrible brown/orange would never bleach out.

If you just want your hair a dark brown colour you could try washing your hair with anti-dandruff shampoo or dish soap to fade the black.
