Economic Lessons From Mad Men:

The series’s characters learn from each other, their clients and seemingly everyone else in their lives. Draper’s marriage may not be happy, but it does seem to give him advertising ideas. Draper appears as a fully formed advertising talent in the first season, and we can only imagine where he got his skills. We are just given hints, like the story about his Greek mentor.

Peggy Olsen is the character whose evolution on the show illustrates how New York City can be a forge of human capital.

Olsen arrives in the first season as a relatively clueless product of Miss Deaver’s Secretarial School. Her eyes couldn’t be wider and she is a sponge for the information delivered by Draper and others. At first, she picks up the ways of the office from the worldly office manager Joan Holloway. Soon, she’s learning from older copywriters about how to sell a vibrating weight loss device with sexual innuendo. By the second season, she’s tapping into the same veins of nostalgia — in her case for Popsicles — that Draper mined to sell the Kodak Carousel. Her rise reflects her openness to the information constantly being emitted around her.

A spot-on distillation of why Mad Men is one of the rare instructive depictions of how business actually works (or can work, anyway).

Season 3 of the groundbreaking new series from AMC, that critics are calling one of “TV’s best-ever dramas,” on DVD and Blu-ray. Set in 1960’s New York City, MAD MEN explores the glamorous and ego-driven “Golden Age” of advertising, where everyone is selling something, and nothing is ever what it seems.

Returning for its third season, the two-time Golden Globe®-winning series for Best TV drama burst with one scandalous surprise after another. Jon Hamm and the rest of the award-winning ensemble continue to captivate us as they contend with a world on the brink. Welcome to Mad Men – a shocking portrait of a time that was anything but innocent. Nothing is as sexy. Nothing is as provocative. Nothing is as it seems. Mad Men: Where the Truth Lies.

Back in early September, soon after the season started, Amazon began taking pre-orders for Mad Men – Season 3 on DVD and high-def Blu-ray Disc, but no release date was provided yet. Now Lionsgate has alerted retailers to expect both versions to hit stores on March 23rd.

My daughter watched Frosty Returns last night, and much to my surprise, Elizabeth Moss' name is prominently featured in the opening credits (along with Johnaton Winters, John Goodman, and Brian Doyle-Murray). Miss Moss must be have all of ten years old at the time it was made.

Frosty Returns is supposed to be a sequel of sorts to the classic Frosty the Snowman, and while it compares pretty poorly, I don't think it's nearly as bad as the mostly scathing reviews on IMDB.com would indicate.

It's been a good week for Mad Men!

AMC's '60s-set saga was nominated for multiple Golden Globes and SAG Awards following the show's top-notch third season, and since we're as obsessed as the trophy folks with the wild world of midcentury Madison Avenue—not to mention still dwelling on that blockbuster season finale ep—we chased down Mad Men creator Matt Weiner at the Hollywood Radio and Television Society's annual Hitmakers fundraiser to grill him for exclusive insight into what went down this past year and what's to come.

Here's what we learned about the forces fueling the establishment of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, why Joan's (Christina Hendricks) not out of the woods yet, and what really sent Betty Draper (January Jones) fleeing to Reno...

I don't have the patience to wait till summer 2010 for the new season )

I know we're all sad about having to wait until summer for more Mad Men. I am, too, and wondering what the heck I'm going to do in all that time.

Mods, fellow comm members, I have a suggestion.

Why don't we do an episode rewatch? Other comms and forums have done this before, and it sounds like a good idea. We can start with "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes", the pilot, and end of course with "Shut the Door, Have a Seat". We could start discussing whenever, I guess.

What do you guys say?

(Mods, hope this is okay with you?)
