Boston Legal: Season 1

Ah, my first review. This is eventually going to be in a seperate section, but for now we're going to hide it on the front page.

Boston Legal starts off by putting everything right out there. Literally. When the first major eye-catching event is Larry Miller in no pants, you know you're in for a ride.

The writing in the show is by far some of the best, and blends the Drama and Comedy in this Dramedy to perfection. Serious situations are presented with gravitas, and everything else with levity. One-liners abound, of a consistent quality that I haven't seen since Popful Mail for the Sega CD. (How's that for an obscure reference?) Each character could be identified by dialogue alone, which makes the characters an exceptional treat.

Between the Twitch-esque antics of Alan Shore and the stodginess of Denny Crane, it's the legal Odd Couple that makes this show. But if you think this is the Spader & Shatner show, think again. Almost every single character on the show adds their own qualities to offset the Dynamic Duo of Law. Rene Auberjonois is the perfect straight-man for the show, with an air of an old-guard lawyer who is watching his firm fall down around his ears. Candice Bergen brings a life and fire to Schmidt, Rhona Mitra plays the perfect female foil for Alan, and Mark Valley has the perfect military look and carriage for former-Marine Brad Chase. Unfortunately, Lake Bell just rings flat as Sally Heep, and it didn't surprise me at all when they "removed" her from the show. Monica Potter's character Lori likewise sits a little flat at times, though I'm holding out hope the character will start to shine in future seasons.

From a DVD standpoint, though, this is second worst from a technical standpoint that I have ever watched. (Neurotically Yours: Volume 1 holds the title right now...) After each episode the disc puts you back at the chapter menu for that episode, and you must go "Back", then to the next episode, then select "Play". The lack of a "Play All" option is nearly inexcusable. And while moderately informative, the extras on the final DVD feel less like "Oooh, we should put these on here" and more as filler rather than putting Episode 17 all by its lonesome on Disc 5.

I'm looking forward to watching Season 3 on TV this fall, and Season 2 when it comes out on DVD in November. I just hope they've figured out the "Play All" feature by then.

Band Update - July 2006!

Mad Apple is taking a hiatus to finish "Love It or Too Old Superstar who can't JustPickANameAlready", their second full-length CD. Once we have the recordings finished, new shows and eventually a CD Release Party will be announced post-haste.

On other fronts, we are still looking for Album Art. The rules are as follows:

Artists may submit art as often as they like. Entries are free, and can be sent to MadApple@gmail.com.
All artwork remains property of the artist/graphic designer. Winners only give up exclusive publishing rights of the finished CD covers / labels. They can still use the raw art in other projects, and raw and/or finished artwork as part of their portfolio.
Winners will receive the following:

First Place: $100 Cash and an autographed, pre-release copy of the CD.
Second and Third Place: An autographed, pre-release copy of the CD.

Consider any and all logos from the website and/or flyers to be fair-use for these designs. The Mad Apple logo above was done using Microsoft's "Magneto" font. Feel free to use other fonts, typefaces, and designs.

We have two new shows to announce!

ATTENTION ARTISTS!

Mad Apple is holding an ARTWORK COMPETITION for the cover art / design for our next album.

Three titles are in the mix: Stereophonic Superstar, Love It or Choke On It, or Too Old for Teenage Angst.

Feel free to design around any of those titles as well as use any photographs of the band (on the website or come to a show and take your own) in your design. "Mad Apple" is normally in Green ( #00FF00 ) and Microsoft's Magneto font, but you may take artistic liberty if you wish.

The templates for design are available here, under Conventional CD Packaging header. Your design must include the outside panels of a 4 Panel Folder, Tray Card, and the On-Disc Imprint (Black and two standard colors on the disc only.) The back of the CD has to have a 1.2" x 0.6" empty white box for a barcode.

Entries will be judged by the band, and keep in mind that elimination of a title choice may eliminate your submission. First Place will receive $100 in cash, and a pre-release copy of the final CD, autographed by all current members of the band. Second and Third Place will also receive an autographed pre-release copy of the final CD.

eMail your finished designs and contact information (Name, e-mail address, Phone Number) to MadApple@gmail.com. Entries must be received by July 15th, 2006.

More complete details (possibly legal crap) and additional photographs will be provided soon!

Just a reminder, the 88.9 Battle of the Bands Finals is THIS FRIDAY at Screwy Louie's in Kent.

We get credit for each ticket we sell, but we're nearly out. If we don't have any tickets left when you get to us, just remember to say at the door, "We're here to see Mad Apple".

We won't get credit for those, but it's a great way to make sure the door person knows who's playing.

After much hype, ado, and work for the show on the 28th...

It was cancelled. We hope whatever caused Chris Caffery to delay the tour is not too dire, and that he'll be back on the road soon.

We do have good news, however. The 28th is now a normal show at Screwy's, and we will be playing. $1 off flyers coming up shortly.

I've been holding out for the last 24 hours, waiting on confirmation before announcing this. (Especially after the last show fell through.)

Today it was confirmed. We are opening on January 28th, 2006 at Screwy Louie's for Chris Caffery of Savatage / Trans-Siberian Orchestra fame.

Get your tickets through any of Mad Apple's band members or by sending an e-mail to Chad. Tickets are $10 per person, all ages admitted.
