wishing again...

If Apple were smart, they would do a deal with Netflicks. That would actually give the Apple TV product value.

Netflicks lets it's members download movies and TV shows for free. Well you have to pay your monthly fee to be a member but after that there's no charge to download content.

That's the model I wish Apple had, and it would make sense to just leverage Netflicks content library.

Latest iTunes = slow USB

The latest iTunes update (7.7) seems to have affected either my iPod (a Nano fattty, 1.1.2 firmware) or OS X (10.5.4) on my iBook G4. Plugging it into either of my iBook's USB ports results in a USB 1.1 connection.

Has anyone else had this problem after updating? Any suggestions for getting back to USB 2 speeds?

Thanks!

iCal & Sharing Calendar Writing...

Hi Folks.

I'm running a webcal server and using iCal 2.x for a client. You can easily subscribe to, and see other folks calendars in this context, and publish your own.

However, is there a way to publish a calendar with iCal that several people can manipulate and write events to? Is there a way to do this? I can't figure out any way within iCal that you can write events to a calendar that you, yourself, have not published. I think such a thing is possible within the CalDAV protocol, but does iCal 2.x support this functionality? As far as I can tell, it doesn't (or I've not been able to figure it out), but I wanted to get other opinions.

I just bought a Macbook Pro, 3 days ago. Today I read something about glitches with the nvidia geforce 8600m GT graphics cards that come in the macbook pro, including mine. I don't really understand this issue-- does it affect me? I don't play world of warcraft or anything on my computer, does that matter? Should I act sooner rather than later so that I don't end up losing files/my computer during school?

i'm kind of pissed off that they didn't tell me about this when i bought the laptop.

Itunes Jams Up and must be Force Quit or killed

running iTunes 7.7
Mac OS 10.5.4
iBook G4 1.2 GHz
1.25 GB RAM
iPod Classic 160GB with no discernible problems up to this point. about 6 months old.

Have not updated my iPod since my upgrade to iTunes 7.7. Tonight when trying to update my iPod, iTunes freezes. Force Quit iTunes, eject iPod. Restart computer. Reset iPod. Restart iTunes. All songs are where they should be. iTunes works prefect. Connect iPod. iPod mounts to desktop. iTunes becomes sluggish, then hangs, then freezes. Spinning pinwheel. Must Force Quit iTunes and eject iPod manually. iPod will not mount inside iTunes. iPod works fine when ejected, plays music, no missing music.

Any suggestions on how i can fix this?

I made the switch from PC to MacBook last week and I love it. I've made myself familiar with the basic functions and programs but have come up with a few questions with the switch and was hoping for some help.

-Is there a free program (not limited to one or five songs) that will transfer songs from my iPod back to iTunes so I can reformat my iPod to my Mac? I manually updated my iPod on my PC so I have no music on it anymore. Every version I've tried has been a trial version.

-I know you can get Microsoft Word on Mac, but is it necessary to pay for the whole Word, Excel, Powerpoint.. if I'm just going to use Word for college papers? I guess if not, I could use TextEdit and just use a PC on campus to print it out with Word.

-Is it necessary to get an external hard drive from the Apple store or can I get one from my local Target-ish store? Does it have to be the Apple brand or does that not matter?

Thanks for any help.

iomega 500GB External USB Drive Issue...

I've got a 500GB USB External Desktop drive that I've been using with Time machine to backup my MacBookPro. I'm running 10.5.4.

I noticed earlier today that the drive seems to be continuously running. Ya know ~ whirring, clicking, light constantly blinking like some program is continuously using the drive.

Does this until I eject it. If I re-mount the drive ~ it starts the cycle again. ~ whirring, clicking, light blinking. This is a little disconcerting. Driving *heh* me a little crazy.

I've unplugged the power supply. Moved the connection from a USB hub to one of the on-board ports.

Questions I have:

1. How can I find out what the blazes is hitting the drive?

2. I have backups on the thing dating back to ~ November 2007 ~ I think. Trying to think why I would need to go back that far because I may want to reformat the drive with disk utility. Matter of fact I'm running superduper to clone the HD in my MBP as I type this. Do y'all think this (reformatting) will help? But then of course I've lost all my time machine backups as well! Dunno if this is really an issue as everything else seems okay...

3. If this drive is going out, it may be the last IOmega drive I buy. What do y'all use? Should I spend the extra bucks and go FireWire?

Suggestions? Recommendations?

Quite a quandary...

x-posted

Just wondering if some of you can help me with my little dilemma. Here are some bits of information that may (but probably won't) add more incite into my problem:

Macbook running version 10.5.4.
And this screenshot will tell you everything you need to know about my account:

AND YET, whenever I try to log in on me.com, I get an error message that reads: Invalid name or password.

I know for a fact that the password is correct. I have even reset it and tried again with no success.

A Google search told me that some people who were on .Mac trials have experienced problems in transitioning to the MobileMe service, but I have been a .Mac member for over 2 years.

Any help? :(

I opened them in photoshop, and then my cat jumped on my laptop and pressed a bunch of buttons. Now the photos are gone from the folder, and I can't find them anywhere. Not even in the trash. Is that even possible? Are they completely gone, or are they somewhere on my computer? If anyone has any idea what I can do to find them...please help :(

Anyone know how do I use MobileMe to upload and share a few photographs for ebay, I can put them in my iDisk public folder but i can't get to them directly from a web browser? I can get to the iDisk web app but I still can't find out how to link to the actual files.

*edit* I think i've worked out how to do it, create a site in iWeb, publish it then there will be a Web folder on my iDisk where I can bung my pictures and get to them from a web browser url.

*edit edit* The dotmac web server does not allow directory listing, it will only display an index.html or direct links to the files. any idea how i can get around this?

Hello.

I currently own the first generation iPhone. I actually updated the phone yesterday with the 2.0. Due to my excitement, I downloaded Super Monkey Ball. It was working fine last night, but when I woke up this morning, it was not working. Everytime I touch the icon on the home screen, it just shows the Monkey Ball graphic and then it goes back to the home screen. Same is through with the other applications that I downloaded (Crash Banticoot and eBay).

How can I get this resolved?

Thanks for the help.

Mac Problem

It's a bit of a long story, but if you'll bear with me:

It started with a simple problem of my parallels system leaving me the message, "Virtual machine cannot be started because of the following problem:

Parallels desktop is unable to access the virtual hard disk image file "/Parallels/Microsoft Windows XP/winxp.hdd." The file is corrupted.

So I ended up trying to troubleshoot the whole thing. I ended up adding some code into the terminal system, which unfortunately I don't have down anywhere to retrieve. While eventually I ended up mostly figuring out the parallels problem (although the new VM will start up, it freezes any time it tries to boot from the hd) but in the process I managed to completely destroy the rest of my system.

Essentially my laptop won't retain any new actions I perform. Firefox won't open up(it'll bounce in the dock but never starts up) and any time I open and then close a program it treats it as if I just installed it (my dock also restarts with the original available programs). An example would be how adium resets to default settings and appears with the message "Could not create the Sounds Folder: Try running Repair Permissions from Disk Utility". Safari also resets any bookmarks or new homepages and appears every once and a while with the message "A keychain cannot be found to store Safari". Even if I restore the default settings the same message appears. Also to note, many of the folders and programs were locked up, but I did reverse it for most of the things I found that problem with... however everything else is a mess.

I don't want to have to resort to reinstalling everything and there appears to be no viruses (I did two full system scans with ClamXav just in case) so any help but be amazing.

Thank you so much!

MobileMe w/ IE6

Apple decided to not support IE6 with MobileMe, which for the most part is a good thing. The only bad thing is that I work in a place which still only had IE6 and no other browsers available. Any suggestions of how I can check my email from work now?

Edit: I do know of sites where you can check a POP mail account via the web, but I guess what I was really thinking is if there's a way to have MobileMe fooled into thinking IE6 is a supported browser somehow (though I think probably not).

iTunes 7.7 bug - renaming tags - solution found!

Ever since the iTunes 7.7 update last night, some non-standard characters are getting renamed.
I took some small pictures to illustrate my point.
Before:

After:

Once you rename the file back to what it should be, the problem stops.

How to fix!
Select the files that would be modified if played, go to Advanced > Convert ID3 tags > ID3 tag version to v2.4. After that the tracks are not modified by iTunes anymore. But if the tags had been modified before they are converted it won't fix those tracks back.

NOTE: Tracks with ID3 tags below version 2.4 will become garbled if you try to import them into your library again.

[edited 20080713 21:20]

I have photoshop CS and it's always worked perfectly. Today when I try and open it, it keeps quitting. I've tried to reopen but nothing has worked. Any suggestions?

Earlier tonight, it was stated on the .mac homepage and on Macworld that the conversion window would be 6pm to midnight PDT tonight (0100-0700 GMT Thursday), but I notice it has now been shifted to be two hours later.

Wit's End

This is going to be really vague, but I hope someone can help me or point me in the right direction.

After making the mistake of installing a download manager for use with Safari about a year and a half ago, only to delete it after it proved useless, I deleted the application. I don't remember what it was called anymore, but deleting it broke Safari. Whenever I attempt to download something (excepting saving images to disk) Safari crashes. The crash log is under the cut.

I've been using Camino in the interim, which has been fine, with the simple, infuriating exception of how Camino seems to have another issue with downloads. Half of the time, the file I want to download is a .dmg or .zip, and for some reason, Camino seems to be unable to recognize these files as something that needs to be downloaded to the computer rather than loaded. I get a blank screen with the URL of the file in the URL box. Leaving the file to finish loading leaves me with a blank screen and no file on my computer. If I can get to it fast enough, often ctrl-clicking on the alternate download link on whatever page I'm using will allow me to save the file to the HD, but this isn't always an option when the page is redirected to the phantom not-download blank page.

I downloaded iCab to see if it would be a viable alternative, but after opening Safari today, iCab is also crashing when I try to download files. From skimming the crash log, it looks mostly the same as the Safari log.

Suggestions? I'm about to just try wiping the computer and reinstalling everything, but obviously that's kind of a last resort.

Date/Time: 2008-07-09 16:36:57.311 -0700
OS Version: 10.4.11 (Build 8S165)
Report Version: 4

Command: Safari
Path: /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/MacOS/Safari
Parent: WindowServer [1416]

Version: 3.0.4 (523.12)
Build Version: 1
Project Name: WebBrowser
Source Version: 45231200

PID: 1503
Thread: 0

Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001)
Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000000

Thread 0 Crashed:
0 <unknown disk="disk" fragment="fragment"> 0x01163c28 0x115c000 + 31784
1 <unknown disk="disk" fragment="fragment"> 0x0115d208 NPP_SetWindow + 328
2 <unknown disk="disk" fragment="fragment"> 0x0115de74 Private_SetWindow__FP4_NPPP9_NPWindow + 36
3 com.apple.WebKit 0x957c7124 -[WebBaseNetscapePluginView setWindowIfNecessary] + 116
4 com.apple.WebKit 0x957c5f60 -[WebBaseNetscapePluginView updateAndSetWindow] + 128
5 com.apple.WebKit 0x957c5928 -[WebBaseNetscapePluginView start] + 248
6 com.apple.WebKit 0x957c56d8 -[WebBaseNetscapePluginView viewDidMoveToWindow] + 136
7 com.apple.AppKit 0x93799d54 -[NSView _setWindow:] + 876
8 com.apple.AppKit 0x93799fc4 -[NSView addSubview:] + 372
9 com.apple.WebKit 0x957c0a00 -[WebHTMLView addSubview:] + 64
10  com.apple.WebCore         	0x95aa0cc4 WebCore::Widget::addToSuperview(NSView*) + 324
11  com.apple.WebCore         	0x95aa0a34 WebCore::RenderWidget::setWidget(WebCore::Widget*) + 596
12  com.apple.WebCore         	0x95aa077c WebCore::RenderPart::setWidget(WebCore::Widget*) + 108
13  com.apple.WebCore         	0x95b19164 WebCore::FrameLoader::loadPlugin(WebCore::RenderPart*, WebCore::KURL const&, WebCore::String const&, WTF::Vector
[Error: Irreparable invalid markup ('<webcore::string,>') in entry.
my printer just won't quit (and it's a little annoying)

Has anyone else been experienced issues like this with your print utility hanging around after it's print jobs are done? I haven't has a printer at home in quite a while (didn't need one) so when we added one recently, sometime around 10.5.3, I noticed this issue for the first time on my Mac. Doesn't seem to effect our iBook, which is interesting. Possibly a PPC/Intel difference, something to do with network printing versus a direct USB connection?

Anyways, here's a list of things related to Google results and others with the issue that I've tried (to no avail). I've completely reset the printing system (reinstalling the printer). I've toggled my default printer setting. I've made sure the Auto Quit preference is checked (always has been). I've told the print utility to hide completed jobs. No matter what, the utility never quits itself after a job. Oh and yes, I'm using the most recent drivers for my printer from the manufacturer, not whatever was on some old CD in the box.

It's not a really big deal, I'm just curious as to what could be causing this. I've noticed that my printer doesn't fire up a utility that's stored in /Applications/Utilities anymore, but rather something in ~/Library/Printers that's named for my printer - is that a new Leopard thing or just HP being weird with newer Laserjets?

Advice on HD replacement...

Ok, so remember I posted some days ago about my computer behaving erratically at random times and most of you predicted HD doom? Well, it's still acting weird at times, albeit not as much as before, but I've become somewhat paranoid so I've backed up and I'm looking for a replacement. You know, better safe than sorry ;)

Here's where you come into play. I need advice for buying a new HD to replace my current one. Since I'm gonna go through this trouble I might as well do an upgrade, so I'm looking for a compatible drive that is at least 160GB (better if more), a reliable brand and a reliable (and affordable) online shop to get it.

A reasonably priced firewire/usb drive enclosure for the HD (to use while making the carbon copy) would be great, too :)

Suggestions?

System specs:
Aluminium PowerBook G4 15" with 1.25 GHz PPC, 2GB RAM running Mac OS X 10.5.4

(cross-posted to macintosh)

Application to convert .BWI disk image?

Anyone know of any handy apps that'll convert a blindwrite .BWI disk image into a more widely usable disk image format like .iso .bin or somesuch? Or even any app on mac that can read and mount a .BWI image? All the conversion tools I've run across are just for windows, arrgh.
