File Renaming Issue
I'm having a really strange issue with my new MBP (10.5.2). About half of the time, when I try to rename a file in finder in the usual manner (select file, click again to bring up the cursor; or, hit enter when the file is selected), for some reason the cursor only appears for a second or less, then reverts to the file just being selected. This results in it being VERY difficult to rename files, which is extremely frustrating. I can bring up the file info and change the name from there, but I shouldn't have to do that. For some reason, this does not happen consistently, and seems to be fairly sporadic. Does anyone know what the problem might be, or how to fix it?

I've tried to repair permissions in case that was affecting it... but for some reason it's hanging, and will not complete, so I'll have to boot up from the original CD once I have access to it.

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Not sure what's causing it, but FWIW this is very unlikely to be a permissions issue—when you don't have write permissions, it'll let you try renaming normally but then give you an error window when the rename tries to commit. Additionally, even if it was, Repair Permissions would only help if it was part of something installed through Installer (and possibly not even then—I've heard suggestions, which I have not verified, that it only actually changes permissions on stuff from Apple).

Repairing permissions (or trying to, rather), was really just a last-ditch attempt, since it has repaired odd issues for me in the past.

If your computer is reading or writing another file in the same folder as the file you are trying to rename this will usually happen.

I'm pretty sure the computer isn't doing much of anything when this occurs, and it definitely wasn't writing to/reading from files in said folder. I think I know what you're talking about though. Thanks.

Also, if you have "Show Icon Preview" turned on, it takes a minute for the finder to do that. Especially for a folder full of video. Does the problem occur if you get info on an individual item and try to rename it there?

I was actually in list view when this was occurring - I think I do have the show icon preview option turned on, but unless this now affects the teeny little icon shown in that view...? The particular folder did contain video, although I seem to recall having this problem in other folders as well.

I can rename files using get info - it's just a huge pain, although more efficient than waiting until the cursor decides to hang around for a while (which sometimes happens).
