I'm using an OLD iBook with OS X 10.4.6. A while ago I managed to get my mac so stuck that I couldn't even get it shut down by pressing the power button. Obviously the next (not so) logical thing to do is take the battery out. And I did. I put it back and restart. I was doing this on work ofcourse and had to serve a customer after booting. I left my computer alone for about ten minutes, when I came back the screen was black and there was these white stripers running on it. I booted again, this time the computer respondet to the power button. This time the mac started on a tigers' welcome screen asking me to fill out all the information etc. I didn't really have any important files on this computer so it doesn't bother me that much. But the hard drive on this thing is really small, like 14gb, and i had some big files on it and they still seem to be there filling my hd. So my question is this, is there any way to restore those files, defragmet this thing, anything, so that i can get that space back? I bought this thing really cheap from my school, so i don't have any backup systems or cd's or anything really. Please help me out, this thing is dying on my hands. Current Mood: drained

I have reason to believe my iMac's HDD is dead. first the model info etc: 17" white imac (late 2006 model, not the newer "aluminum" models) w/ intel core 2 duo When I try to boot I either get the "prohibitory" icon (circle with a line through it, think Ghostbusters icon without ze ghost) or the apple logo with the spinning lines underneath upon which the machine just hangs. I hear clicking/scratching noises from the computer when it attempts to boot from the HDD or when I attempt to select it from the boot volume utility from the OS X install disk. I can't seem to access the diagnostics mode (hold d on start up) from either the OS X install CD that came with the computer or the OS X leopard disk (the current OS on the machine). I've tried the following measures: reset the PRAM (hold option + command + p + r on start up) boot into os x installation cd and run disk utility: - takes aprox 5min for the volumes list to list the individual partitions on my hard drive - sometimes they come up as their unix names or whatever (disk1a or whatever) - sometimes they come up as Macintosh HD and untitled (windows partition) - have got through a repair process successfully once (found no errors) - rest of the time they are unable to be repaired boot in target disc mode onto another machine: - target disc works but the HDD won't mount, CDs in my drive will boot into safe mode (doesn't boot) boot into target volume mode (hold option on start up) - i get a mouse cursor but no volumes show up, not even install CDs i have resigned myself into believing the HDD is dead and needs replacing. before i do this (seemingly complicated for this particular model of imac) repair: could this problem be stemming from other parts of the machine (logic board etc) so i don't spend the time/money attempting to fix something that might not be the cause of the issue? does anyone have any other ideas about possibly either mounting the discs to recover data from them (most of the data i've backed up but there was some that i have not)? also, does anyone have an experience in replacing imac HDDs who would have any advice? thank you very much. Current Mood: depressed

I've found an annoying bug with the "HP DeskJet 6840 Foomatic/hpijs" driver. When I try to print in landscape it prints in the image in portrait but rotated 90 degrees so the right side of the image gets cut off. Meanwhile if I use the generic driver that ships with MacOS X "HP DeskJet Series, 1.3" the image will print correctly in landscape. However the problem with the generic driver is that the text comes out super blurry. The reason for this is that the generic driver does not support 600dpi in Color Mode. So instead you get 300dpi which looks very blurry from the default MacOS X driver. The Footmatic/hpijs driver prints in color 600dpi by default (and looks excellent). The Foomatic/hpijs driver can also print up to 1200dpi in photo color.. meanwhile the default MacOS X driver stops at 300dpi. I'd prefer to use the "HP DeskJet 6840 Foomatic/hpijs" driver because the text comes out super crisp. But this "can not print landscape" bug is driving me batty. Anyone run into this and have a work around? UPDATE Here's the solution: 1- Get to the Page Size selection (varies program to program) and select "Manage Custom Sizes". From Preview it's on the main print screen. From Excel it's under "Page Options, Page Tab - Options, Page sizes" 2- Create a new page size that's 11in wide by 8.5in tall and save it as Custom-Landscape 3- Whenever you print always print in "Portrait" mode and just select your "Custom-Landscape" Page Size. That gets around this bug nicely.

I just implemented a 250GB Time Machine backup drive at home, and it's currently running the initial backup of my files. However, it automatically excluded my home folder; I assume it's because I'm using FileVault? So, here's a few questions:
1) Though it's excluding my home folder, will all of my applications still work if I had to restore from a backup? I know some preference files and such are stored in /user/Library/, rather than /Library/.
2) If I include my home folder, when will Time Machine back it up? The help menu said it can't back up home folders that use FileVault unless that user is logged out. Do I have to log out only for this to work, or can I shut down? For example, would Time Machine back up during the "recovering disk space in user's home folder" screen that appears before shutdown, or do I have to log out, and let the Mac sit at the login screen while Time Machine works its magic?

I've had some problems with my Airport Express -which I bought last fall, I believe- after every Airport Utilities Update. But ever since last week, when I also upgraded from 10.5.6 to 10.5.7, I have been unable to connect neither my MacBook [2.1 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo] nor my iMac [2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, still on 10.5.6] to my Airport Express.
When this happened before, I've always managed to connect them eventually by performing a hard-reset on my Airport and configure everything again. But since last week, no such luck.
Since Airport Utilities was unable to locate my Airport Express, something I've had problems with after every single upgrade, I connected the Airport directly to my MacBook via the network cable in order to set it up properly. My boyfriend then could connect his Laptop [Toshiba, Windows XP] to the network I set up and was happily surfing the www while I was reading error message after error message. I just couldn't join, neither with the MacBook nor the iMac. I kept getting "connection timeout" and "invalid password" errors, but I'm 100 % sure I typed the correct password. I then deleted all networks that I had stored to connect automatically to. Still nothing.
I'm pretty much lost now. Does anyone know what else I could try? My Airport Express has never worked flawlessly for me anyway, but it has always worked after a few hours of trying. And they guys at the store where I bought it have checked it out and it's OK. So I guess it must have something to do with the MacBook and iMac. And probably myself as well... :(
Also: I'm not very tech-savvy, so please try to speak very slowly and only use simple words. :D Thanks!
