So this is the first post since the final episode...

They ended up together yaaaay!! I was so so SO HAPPY when Mac proposed, and the wedding was lovely :) But the only thing is, if Mac's really dying, then they only have a few weeks together...which is so sad! I'm going to try and believe that there is still some mix up, and they'll be happy ever after...

ok we know that Mac likes Caroline from around ep 5 with the kissing, and teasing her in ep 6 and getting annoyed in ep 7 that caroline and guy are on a date...but I was wondering whats ur take on Emmy? Why do you think he went out with her when he liked Caroline? I have a theory that he did it because he knew he had to move away and it was easier than admitting his feelings to caroline, but then I don't think that works cuz Emmy is going to Sheffield as well...ok i'm just confusing myself, what do you carmac shippers think?

'Five top qualities' scene ponderance

So here I am, experiencing severe Green Wing and especially Caromac withdrawal, and so am watching my favourite parts of the two series ~~as usual~~. And then I come across that good old scene in episode 2.2: "So what would you say are the five most important qualities for a woman" says Caroline to Mac, and so on.

And this got me thinking - when Mac lists his 5 qualities, is he or is he not deliberately describing Caroline? So far I have come up with these arguments:

Yes he is, because:
-He is describing Caroline pretty much perfectly - a reminder for those who can't remember/can't be bothered to look/can't see that scene again:
1) Unpredictable
2) Must appreciate the genius of the Kinks (ok, so maybe he's not describing her so perfectly for this one - see lower argument)
3) Thoughtful eyes
4) Should be in touch with her masculine side
5) Compassionate
-He keeps glancing at her meaningfully (in my view) in between statements, I think trying to gauge her response.
-He says "I know, it's an impossible dream", which in my view is just the sort of way you would expect Mac to hint at something... I don't know if that makes sense, but it's the best way I can put it in words.
-He especially glances lingeringly at her after saying the 'impossible dream' thing - and yes, I know, I've put waaaaay too much thought into this scene.... but oh well!

No he's not, because:
-He doesn't know/think Caroline is a Kinks fan, so technically he's not describing her as perfectly as first thought.
-In the spoon of destiny scene, which came after this scene, he calls her a "Google eyed neanderthol".
-After the 'neanderthol' comment he suddenly realises that he likes her and it seems a surprise to him, so why would he be describing her as his type of woman before? (This reason also cancelled out my first thought that maybe he was saying the 'neanderthol' thing to look cool or something in front of Guy).

So all in all I'm very confused - I want to believe that he was deliberately describing her but the whole spoon scene has got me all muddled up! Another possible theory I've come up with is that perhaps it was his sub-conscience speaking when he described the top qualities, some part that remembered how much he liked her before the rest of his brain did!

Anyway I'd love to get your thoughts and theories. And for the record, I know that I'm scrutinising this scene far too much for no particular reason, but I was bored and this comm seemed quite quiet recently, so I thought what the hell?! :D

Which is where you guys come in - post links to your favourite M/C fics, be it on fanfiction.net, message boards/forums, here on LJ, or anywhere else. Heyhey all!

S'been a little quiet, so I thought I'd grace you all with a Caroline&Mac music vid that I've just finished compiling. Inspiration has been blooming after buzzing inside my mind for about a week. It's my first Green Wing vid, though I haven't made one in a very long time - so be nice and enjoy! It's to Stevie Wonder's Lately - which I think is extremely fitting =) I've only uploaded it to YouTube so far because YouSendIt was being uber slow earlier and I had to go out for a few hours, but if you wanna download a copy, just let me know and I'll upload it and edit with a link! ^.^

fic challenge. :)

Seeing as there seems to be quite a lot of interest in having a fanfic challenge here, thought i'd run a few ideas past you guys:

The house_cameron lj community occasionally runs challenges in which people sign up for the challenge, and then are randomly selected to write a fic for another person entered. That person gives three things they want in their story, and three things they definately don't, and these can be anything.

I think this could be fun...if we get enough people entering.

Or, we could just have a theme or word prompt, and write fic around that.

Do you like these ideas, or suggest something else?

If it's all ok, i'll get up a post with rules etc...

I just remembered that at the party in episode 5 (series 1) Caroline tells Mac all she had to eat that day was hula hoops! And then in ep e series 2, there was of course the whole hula hoop thing...bit of a theme for Mac/Caroline :)

Just thought I'd get a bit of discussion going on here. :)

Just out of curiosity, in series 1, when do you think signs started to appear that Mac might be falling for Caroline? It's complicated because at first he was all bent out of shape because of the news about Holly, so he was very rude to her (that "do your job, Dr Todd" scene), but then I suppose you could also say he was irritated by it so much because he was jealous, if you choose to see it that way.

The moment that did it for me was the housewarming party - the look on his face when he watches Caroline follow Guy off. That was the moment that made me just go "oh! He likes her!" Of course this had followed the "she could be your one..." scene, which was very sweet and sowed the seeds nicely. :)

What do you guys think? Any moments even earlier in the series that made you think there might be something there? What was the first defining M/C moment for you in series 1?

To finish, here's a quote from series 1 that I thought was rather fitting in light of how series 2 ended (and I just love it generally)...

Caroline: We didn't really get on before did we?
Mac: I wouldn't say that.
Caroline: Yes you would. You thought I was some sort of incompetent neurotic who went to a boy's barber, and I thought you were a rude, offhand bloke with ladies hair.
Mac: OK, being serious - maybe I would have said that, but I wouldn't say that any more. We seem to get on OK now, don't we?
Caroline: I hope so - I think we do.
Mac: ...Better late than never.

It's been a bit quiet in here! Here's a little something to cheer everyone up after the last episode.

I've taken a clip of the amazing 'apology' scene from episode 8, because it was absolutely sublime and I don't think I remembered to breathe the entire way through.

Late last night, fuelled by coffee and inspired by work avoidance and other fanfics in the community, I wrote a little Caroline/Mac fic that turned into something a bit longer than originally expected. I'm hoping this is signalling more to come, because I've never really written fanfic before and quite enjoyed the experience!

Title: Repairing Trust (working title as I think this is LAME, anyone got any other ideas?)
Characters: Caroline and Mac
Rating: PG
Summary: Set during episode 4 of series 2, my imaginings of what might have preceded the bench scene.

Repairing Trust

“Thank you ladies and gentlemen, it’s been a pleasure working with you today. She’s outta here.”

Mac finished the last neat stitch in the patient’s abdomen and set the needle down carefully in the dish lying to one side. He surveyed his work and gave himself a quick nod of approval. Appendectomy – quick, painless, well, for him at least. He couldn’t envy the patient for the pain she must have gone through in the run-up to emergency surgery, but performing the operation to cure it was almost routine these days. He allowed himself a small, private grin as he suddenly remembered Martin’s madcap request for an appendix when he had held Guy’s briefcase in his complete power for a brief, innocent moment.

His smile faded as he remembered where that had led them. It was starting to come back to him now, but parts were still patchy. He remembered the appendix conversation with Martin but he didn’t remember the cliff-top, and somehow the absence of that memory was more terrifying than the alternative.

Mac left the operating theatre lost in a cloud of thought, ignoring Guy who was noisily crooning ‘Wake Me Up’ at the still-unconscious patient, and the nurses chatting around him.

The practical side of his brain kicked in and he started to wonder just how it had happened – how had he ended up in a coma? It wasn’t worth asking the others. Guy would start harping on about his over-exaggerated heroics, throwing in a lot about Mac’s supposed cringing cowardice for good measure, while Martin would probably end up tripping over his own feet to apologise for something that hadn’t been his fault in the first place.

The sight of Caroline struggling out of her mask and apron was a welcome distraction from those thoughts. He sidled over to her and gently pushed away her hands, which were fumbling for a grasp on the strings tying her into the garment from behind. He registered her sudden rigid posture and defensive half-slouch and grinned to himself again. She was still awkward around him when he caught her off guard, as if she was getting ready to run like a startled … deer? No, the thought of Caroline as a startled deer was a strange image. Too graceful. Maybe a newborn foal. Slightly gawky and unsteady on her feet. Tense and shy.

“Nice work in there today, Dr Todd.” The compliment had an immediate effect on her, dissipating some of her tension and giving her pride a definite nudge.

“Nice of you to say so, Dr Mac, did you know I’ve been practising my needlework specially?”

“Cutting, as ever. You know, I think I remember a conversation we had before the accident.” He paused, and touched a hand on her shoulder briefly before moving away and taking off his own surgical garments. Then he slowly and deliberately smoothed his scrubs down and combed a hand through his slightly tangled hair. Although he was facing away from her he could still feel the tension coming off her in a palpable surge of expectation. “On the day of the accident, I remember you asking me why I try and make everything into a joke.”

“And you said, you said you did it to avoid confronting all the real issues that we adults have to face.” She spoke eagerly, but allowed her tone to lower into that deadpan drawl in the last part of the sentence. That deadpan drawl that he had come to appreciate, to like, even.

“Well, let me ask you something.” He narrowed his eyes at her and smiled a quizzical smile. “Why are you so defensive around me? Now that I’m starting to remember things I thought we could, you know, be a bit more natural.”

Caroline gave a short, uncomfortable laugh, lowering her eyes and brushing part of her fringe away unnecessarily. He took a step closer to her and forced her to meet his stare.

“I’m not being defensive,” she said finally, folding her arms across her chest and looking at him defiantly.

“Your posture would suggest otherwise.”

“And I would still tell you that I’m not being defensive. I let you give me a ride into work this morning didn’t I? That’s hardly defensive behaviour.”

“There was a certain amount of self defence going in the way you had your arms wrapped around me as if you were holding on for dear life, but I’ll put that down to it being your first time on a motorbike.”

“And I liked it!” Caroline replied hurriedly. “Alright. Alright, if you really want to know, I’m not being defensive, I’m just, well, being a bit careful around you.”

“It’s alright, they definitely removed the fangs before they let me come and work here,” Mac said, pointing at his teeth. Caroline waved a dismissive hand at him and shook her head.

“The last time things got this far between us you went and met that Emmy and I made a tit out of myself trying to convince you to stay here instead of buggering off to Sheffield with her.”

“Yes, some of that’s coming back to me now. You used some quite colourful language, if I remember rightly.” The look Caroline gave him then made him wish he’d kept quiet. He fell silent and opened his hands outward in a gesture to say she definitely had the floor.

“Then, just when things were looking up because you decided that you actually didn’t mind me insulting Emmy and making a tit out of myself because you quite liked me, you went and fell off a cliff with Guy and Martin in a hijacked ambulance. And after you’d had a nice long eight-week nap you woke up and couldn’t even remember how Emmy poured beer over your head because you stood up for me, or how you ended up kissing me in the lecture theatre and, and I just don’t know what to expect from you sometimes.” Caroline faltered for a moment as if she felt she’d gone too far, but Mac kept his open expression and gave her a small smile that said she could carry on if she liked.

Caroline spoke again in a small voice, looking up at him with the direct, defiant stare that he had come to know so well. “Sometimes it seems like things are back to how they were before and then again sometimes I just don’t know. So forgive me for being a little defensive, Mac, because when I let my guard down around you I don’t know whether I’m going to be rewarded or slapped in the face.”

Mac laughed helplessly and gave a shrug, but then he saw Caroline’s expression. He softened, and took a step towards her.

“Well, thanks for explaining that. Helps if we each know where the other stands in this.” He kept his tone light, but looked at her with a firm gaze. “I would just say though, Caroline, that I’m not a different person to the one I was before the accident. I haven’t suddenly changed into Guy or God forbid, Dr Statham.” Caroline looked sideways and grinned for a moment. “What?”

“Oh it’s nothing. Well, just something Dr Statham did while you were in a coma. He drew all over your face and –”

“Did he? I’ll have to think of some extremely witty and subtle way of getting him back.” Mac’s brow creased in concentration for a moment. “Maybe I should get Martin to help me.”

“So,” Caroline began hesitantly, “now you know what I think, what do you think?”

Mac put his hands behind his back and leaned sideways towards Caroline, giving her a half smile. “I think you should stop acting as though I’m a big but at the same time loveable monster who might accidentally step on you because I’ve forgotten you’re there.”

“So we’re … okay?”

“Oh I don’t know, how about more than okay?” He turned towards Caroline and put one hand lightly on her waist, registering the way her mouth had invitingly formed an ‘o’ of surprise as he leaned towards her. She relaxed and softened, and closed her eyes, moving to meet his lips halfway with hers.

Just then, Guy appeared at their side, holding up a pair of latex gloves. “Who wants to help me fill a load of these with water and stuff them in Martin’s locker?” he asked. Mac and Caroline stared at him. “Oh. Hope I’m not interrupting?”

“No Guy, your timing is as perfect as ever,” Caroline replied. She looked up at Mac, who had moved back from her, and gave him a small smile before walking away. “See you later,” she called back at them.

Mac raised his eyebrows at Guy, then took one of the gloves and stretched it over the anaesthetist’s head. “See you later, Feathers McGraw. I’m going to lunch.” Ignoring Guy’s protests, he ran and caught up with Caroline, who was already walking towards the Doctors Mess. “Fancy lunch outside?” he asked her. “There’s a nice bench I’ve been meaning to investigate for a while now.”

“Oh, moving up the property ladder are you?”

“Well, much as I’m sentimental about my parking space, I definitely want something with more of a view. You know, a second property in the country.”

Caroline grinned at him. “Sounds like something worth looking into.”

Mac returned the smile. Overall, he thought, it wasn’t such a bad thing, having to rely on partial memories only from the day of the accident. Some memories were far better to have back than others.

Next to him, Caroline walked a little taller than she had done earlier, some of the slouch gone from her shoulders.

Yes, some things were definitely worth having back.

Thought I'd do a little post (for no-one posts much on here seeing as the Green Wing lj is so marvellous) lamenting at the trauma of last night. I mean, yeah, brilliant episode as always. But not so squeeful for Caro and Mac :( I have to say though, I was loving crying Caroline - and I loved her phone message at the end - "It's me, the one.. well not the one you're with now, the proper one..." :D EXACTLY! The UTTER evilness of Holly though. She will be punished. Surely Sue will do another Dr Mancoo on her??! (hmwahahaa)

A small part of me felt guilty for muchly enjoying the Guy-love, but I know it's Carmac all the way! <3 Remember, there is always hope! Tis just tension building for the most spectacular and squeeful finale ever :D (hopefully. even if we do have to wait til Christmas to see it...)
