To Baracka Obama on the eve of his election

As a Canadian, as an NDP supporter, and as a supporter of the Democratic Party for the United States of America, I'd like to say to Baracka Obama on the eve of his election of being both the first Democrat President of a new age and the first African American President of the United States of America, I send him both my gradulations and regrets.

You, sir, get my congraduations upon winning an election against such odds and proving that you were truly the most 'presidential' candidate running in the election that we Canadians were to privy watch. You ran an honest race and I truly tip my hat to you. Even in your victory speech, you truly showed the greatest humily and graciousness to your people and the rest of the world.

I also offer to you my regrets as,since the words "<I>We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.</I>" you have no greater preasure put upon you.
I say to you that, as the first African-American president and as the first Democratic President of this age of war and recession that you have upon you greater pressure than any other president elect since the United States of American declared independance.

All that I hope for you is that you truly make these four years count so that you can make them into eight years and eternity.


As a Canadian, an NDP supporter and as a supporter of the Democratic Party of the United States of America, I put these words to you and put you to task to prove that the entire worlds faith in you is not in vain and that you truly are the leader that your country seeks in this time of need.

World Naked Bike Ride

Naked Cyclists Take to the Streets!


Vancouver will experience the exposed joy and participate in the world's largest naked protest against oil dependency and car culture. It's time to stop indecent exposure to automobile emissions!
Hundreds of cyclists will ride in various stages of undress -- reclaiming the streets as sexy, self-propelled citizens. Come join the naked bicycle people power!

The Vancouver ride starts Saturday, June 7, 2:00pm at Sunset Beach (corner of Beach and Bute).
Body painting and performances will take place before the ride.
Arrive between 12 Noon and 2:00pm to catch some of the action and some of the paint! A picnic following the ride will be hosted by NIFTY.
The ride, pre and post-ride activities are all free. Please download, print and distribute posters and flyers for the ride (or make your own!)

Naked bike riding tips
o Prepare for riding rain or shine!
o If it's sunny, put on sunscreen!
o You do not have to be naked to join the ride.
o Wear shoes!
o If you're shy, we start the ride with some clothing on and then stop away from the crowds to get more bare!
o Keep your clothes with you -- you never know when you may need them (like... after the ride).
o Decorate your bike! Come with signs and funky hats! Cover your bike seat with fun fur!
o Ride safely and stay together as a group.
o Tell your friends! Spread the word!

Midnight Mass and Bonfire Rides

First off, just a reminder that Midnight Mass is tonight. The usual place to meet.

More exciting, Bonfire Rides. These are being organized by the same as that who brought us Midnight Mass.

Midnight Mass Ride and personal conduct.

So, I just got home from the latest Midnight Mass Bike ride and I have to say that I'm disappointed in how some people were behaving, specifically people that were new to the ride.

Some simple concepts here, folks.

We don't need to ride 6 people abreast and block 3 lanes of traffic. There are only like 20 odd people; this isn't Critical Mass. We really should keep over to the side and just take one lane. It is all we need.
Let's not cut off cars or intentionally blocking an extra lane so that they can't pass us. Yeah, that was a brilliant one.

When the light changes to red, maybe you might want to stop for a second and check traffic, maybe let the traffic that has the right of way go first.
I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade or anything, but it is late at night and there are drunk people on the road and I'm just not in the mood to be putting my First Aid Certification to use cos' someone need to feel tough and macho by block traffic for no reason.

I guess what I am slowly working my way around to is the concept of Self Policing. It was something that Simon & other regular M.M riders have talked about in the past and it was something that I agreed heartily with.
I'm not talking about coming down hard on anyone or un-inviting anyone. I'm more about simple stuff.
(*) If someone is genuinely being a jack-ass, just saying to them to that we need them to be more careful.
(*) How about watching cross streets and behind us, calling out Car when there is one coming that we are going to have to interact with? That is just good for everyone cos' it helps keep us all safe.
(*) How about staying in a pack when we ride on roads? I'll say it one more time, this isn't Critical Mass. We don't have that many people, let's just use the space we need and let the cars pass us.
(*) Let's wait up for everyone. A few times, we had to stop the ride to ensure that everyone was still with us. People were pretty good about it, over all, but it is just something that should be thrown in.

I don't think that I am asking for much, but, when I feel bad for the person in the SUV because of how one of our own is treating them, you know that there is something wrong.
Frankly, this is the attitude and rules that the ride has had for the all the time I have been coming. It seems to work for us.

Yes, at Critical Mass the ride takes up the whole road and they do go through lights (having corked the intersection properly) and all that, but that is Critical Mass. They have 150-200+ people show up so that they can do that and can justify it as a simple safety concern.
AT Midnight Mass, we get a maximum of 50 people (at the peak of summer) and even then it is a stretch to take up two lanes of space. I just think we need to ride with a little more care and consideration for those who use the road besides us.

Am I asking too much? (Not a sarcastic question)

Oh, on a side note . . . we honestly spent more time stopped than riding. That so seems to be missing the point of a bike ride.
I'm not even going to comment on the suggestion that came up of us going to a bar.

TODAY! - Tuesday, June 26, 7:30pm - 10:00pm: Dodge Cannon Ball Pirates Vs. Pirates: Strathcona Park Hawks Ave & Prior St. - Since the defeat of the Ninjas by the Pirates, there has been much infighting between the Pirate factions. The battle has risen to the use of ship vs. ship battle and the cannon balls are flying… We will meet at Strathcona Park, which is very easy to get to. It is pretty close to Main St Skytrain. Dress in your best Pirate garb. Vikings welcome as well.

Wednesday June 27th 2007 @ 7:30 pm: Kitten Versus Wolf Manhunt! One sided? Nah -We will meet at Stadium Skytrain Station (Beatty and Dunsmuir street entrance) - Do not forget your Kitten tails and Wolf fangs at home. (optional of course)

Clipless pedals and shoes

I'm finally growing up and going clipless, but there are a lot of different shoes and pedals. I thought that I might go to my fellow cyclists for help.

What shoes and pedals do you recommend, as well as places to get them here in Vancouver?
The war between Pirates and Ninjas has continued over countless generations. Will this be the final showdown between Pirates and Ninjas? The clash will continue each day, for seven days. Each will be able to show their merit as a true Pirate or Ninja through a series of challenges. These challenges will consist of Manhunt, Capture the Flag, Dodge Ball, Sardines, Ringolevio, Watergun fights, Bigger the Better, and more.

We also encourage everyone to wear your best attire to the events. Eye patches, peg legs, black garb, etc.

At this time, we are still hammering out the details so please keep up to date on any changes. We would also be very grateful for any feedback, suggestions, ideas, or hate-mail.
