To clarify: General links, with brief excerpts or by themselves, are fine and actually appreciated, because I'm a linkwhore. This tends to be true of most authors, in fact. So you're fine on that account. And while I'm not crazy about people reposting the entire thing in their journals, I understand the urge to save things in case they disappear off the internet later--just make sure you tack on a name and a link for your own reference.

Icons are also fine--well, they're fine with me, whether I made them or someone else made them. Check with other writers, though.

Okay. Apparently this week is Plagiarfest and nobody told me. I have had to deal with four or five separate reports of plagiarism in the last five days alone (and, again, thank you to the people who have pointed these out to me). For those of you new to this whole intarweb thing and perhaps the concept of authorial credit entirely, lemme splain. And remember, this does not apply just to me because I am OMG so speshul; this goes for ANY AUTHOR ONLINE OR OFFLINE, ANYWHERE, EVER:

Theft is not limited to literal plagiarism, which is "Hey, guys! Look what I wrote! (cough cough)!" Theft includes plagiarism by omission, which is simply posting something without saying who wrote it at all--you or anyone else. If you see any of the following, please alert the actual author:

1. The work posted in its entirety ANYWHERE without permission
2. The work posted in its entirety on a message board without credit
3. The work posted in its entirety in a journal or on a website without credit
4. "I don't know who wrote this, but I got it off a message board and they didn't know who wrote it, either"
5. "Hey guys, this isn't mine, but I thought I'd post it to fanfiction.net anyway!"
6. The work posted on a site/board/journal/whatever with edits and changes *(substituting "s---" or "s***" for "shit" is okay; substituting a wholly different word like "poop" is not, as far as I'm concerned)
7. The work is only excerpted, which is good, but the author's name is completely misspelled and no link to the original online (if there is one) is given
8. The work is quoted, without adaptation that could fall under the category of parody, without attribution. ESPECIALLY IN CAPTION CONTESTS.

You'll notice there's a lot of overlap in that list. You know why? Because PEOPLE DON'T SEEM TO GET IT. Seriously. Do not post it in a box, do not post it on a fox. I do not like creative theft and ham, I do not like it, Jerk I Am.*

From now on, and on all previous "Fifteen Minutes" as soon as I have a moment to spare, the following copyright notice will appear, with a link back to this entry:

© 2004 Cleolinda Jones. All rights reserved.

You may repost brief excerpts with author credit and a link back to this entry or the community as a whole. DO NOT repost this parody 1) without my name or a link back; 2) with any changes to the wording or language*; or 3) in its entirety on your journal, on your website, on a message board, on fanfiction.net, or on ANY OTHER PAGE ON THE INTERNET without my written permission. If you are found to have done so, I will ask you to take it down, and if you do not comply, I will report you to your webspace provider or the journal/archive service on which you have an account, and you will most likely be booted, because I am TIRED of having to deal with this. So be warned. Are we clear?

P.S. OMG DUN STEEL!

And you better believe I would do the same for another author I found being plagiarized.

* "OMG PLAYGERIZM!" Don't play with me--you know damn well what this is from.

a quick question then

I made a post regarding your M15M on Troy and the other parodies you've done, and gave complete credit to you for it. In the post (http://www.livejournal.com/users/joeker/159141.html) I did cut/paste the Troy one - still giving credit.

May I have permission to keep the post (adding your copy copyright notice), or do you want it removed and I can just keep the links? I mainly wanted to save it for posterity because I found it *that* funny, and I don't have faith in things I want to keep up with staying on the internet for me to keep a constant link to.

Just let me know please. and Thank you again for writing them (I left a comment on your home journal but I know you get a LOT of comments).

Yeah, I understand--I'm like that too, only I tend to squirrel things away in locked entries (with links and credit for my own reference) and hoard them jealously. ;)

But seriously--I mean, since you asked, and you have a good reason for it and it's all linked and credited and such, sure, you have my permission. No big. :)

Hi I posted a link to the POA parody in my journal here:

obv it links directly back to this comm, is that ok?

Part of the reason I added you was because I do this as well. Well, not "as well." Perhaps "as good as." Okay, so I do it also, and away with semantics. At any rate, I've had problems with people stealing my good lines, too. I wish you all the luck in the world with the book, and kick these nasty nickers right in their nasty knickers.

I'm up to start a ribbon campaign!

"Support your authors, don't steal their work!" or something... I'm lacking in creativity at the moment, but seriously, there should be a banner out there on every fanfic, message board, etc. site about plaigiarism, and the possible consequences, including how stupid one should feel having been caught red handed.

It's like,

PLAIGIARIZING LAMER: "hullo, I just read something of LJ that was kewl, so I think I'll post it on X message boards/contests/fanfic site without credit to the author, or claim it as my own, because who's gunna know?"

ENTIRE ON-LINE JOURNALING COMMUNITY: "Hey, dumbass! Are you up for a resounding chorus of 'It's a small web, after all 1?'"

I was going to save your parodies for myself (I'm like you, I tend to horde them jealously for myself :->) but if people have been stealing your stuff I won't do that unless it's ok with you.

I ALWAYS give proper credit to authors/artists/whomever. I've had some of my artwork stolen online (and they chose the WORST looking one too, I guess it just goes to show...) so I'm VERY careful about getting permission for personal archival purposes (fan fic and the like) or pictures/artwork.

PLEASE don't stop writing these!! They are great!

I won't stop, don't worry. I don't have a problem with people archiving things in their personal journals with credit and links (I hate it when stuff just vanishes from the internet, too), although I am a big proponent of the Squirreling Away in a Private Entry method.

Actually, now that I've put this entry up, I fully expect a ton more plagiarism reports. Sigh.

Another brilliant author I know had her work lifted ALMOST but not entirely word-for-word, with the added insult of having a disgusting Mary Sue injected into the mix. I did then what I've done now: left an endothermic review on the story and reported them to ffnet abuse. It sucks, and I'm happy to see you're taking steps to prevent it happening again.

I try to avoid posting stuff without at the very least commenting ont he author (if I cant find a proper link). I've linked people back to your m15m from my LJ before (not enough of a masochist to copy and paste the entire things on my own journal).

I assume pimping you out via link on LJ is ok. And I'll make sure you let you know if I run across any uncredited stuff of yours (as well as impale whoever did it)

Copyright, a bit of advice for ya Cleo
[info]leppress
2004-07-01 01:46 pm UTC (link)
Hi Cleo,

For one I love your Movies in 15 mins parodies. They are excellent.

I have a word of advice for you, I have had some small, very small experience with copyrights, taking classes to learn web design, and we beat our heads against the legalities of stuff very often.

In a copyright notice, to make it absolutely legal wording wise, you must have your: © 2004 Cleolinda Jones, and add to it: All rights reserved. To make it correct. That's the basics, the rest regarding actual creative rights and so on, takes an attorney to spell it out. But that will make it completely legally binding, as far as I was taught.

Hope that helps you. I hate seeing anyone's work ripped off for someone else's pleasure, or credit. It makes me ill in more ways than I can count.

Good luck with getting the plagiarists to stop. It's a big world out there.

If it makes you feel any better, I recently found a page where a guy changed a few names ("I wrote this story about my anime characters!"), but otherwise plagiarized The Boogeyman by Stephen King in its entirety. He didn't even have the excuse that 'he didn't know who wrote it' - Stephen King is one of the most-read authors IN THE WORLD.

On second thought, I suppose proof that the world is populated by idiots isn't that comforting.
