Drabble: "Let What Is Broken So Remain"
Title: "Let What Is Broken So Remain"
Rating: PG
Count: 100 words
A/N: Post-war pre-slash. For
lupin100's challenge #58: "Why are we weighed upon with heaviness, / And utterly consumed with sharp distress, / While all things else have rest from weariness?" Both the quote and my title are from Tennyson's "The Lotos-Eaters".
There had been no rest for Remus Lupin after the end of the war. Voldemort’s fall had eliminated a nasty set of challenges, of course, but there remained only so much difference between fending-off-apocalypse, perpetually-on-the-run tired and too-much-not-getting-done, can’t-remember-not-being-tired tired.
Neither of those, however, compared to the end-of-one's-tether exhaustion in Severus Snape’s eyes when Lupin caught him contemplating a lethal dose of hebanon.
Snape sneered. “Tell me why not, Lupin.”
“Because you are not a coward, Severus.”
After a long, long pause, Snape let the flask fall from his palm.
Lupin whispered Evanesco the instant before it hit the floor.
