Challenge: #33, Remus decides to get rid of the grey in his hair.

The razor feels cold as it moves across his scalp, nicking occasionally in spots Remus cannot see. He welcomes the pain, just as he welcomes the cold. Anything is better than feeling nothing, disappearing in these dull rooms in his washed-out clothing with his graying hair.

Stunned silence greets him when he steps into the kitchen. Then, too quickly, encouragement: Bill tells him it's an interesting look, Tonks says it makes a statement.

The statement his bald head makes might be that he's mad. Sirius would have hated it. Yet cutting it all off must be better than fading away.

Thank you! Not a happy drabble for Lupin's birthday I'm afraid...

Don't think I've forgotten that you owe me tied-up, howling-in-ecstasy Snape. He certainly hasn't forgotten. *veg*

O.O! Woah he shaved his head!! Talk about bravery! Although I like how it marks a turnign point and how he uses it to move ahead.

I don't think he was thinking in terms of bravery, just in terms of wanting to do something uncomfortable, irrevocable and a little shocking. Though it would be rather unlike him to do something so publicly demonstrative, I think, so from that standpoint maybe. Thank you!

Shaving one's head is a traditional Hindu rite of mourning. And you've captured precisely why. Its brutal and powerful and a visible symbol of grief. Well done.

Thanks so much -- I knew that it was a rite of mourning but I wasn't sure if it was all Hindus or if it was culture-specific. The Jewish custom is to tear clothes, and I believe the Orthodox are actually not allowed to cut hair, nor to bathe, either of which is considered a sign of self-interest and vanity in mourning. One is also required to wear cloth shoes rather than "outdoor" shoes and to cover all mirrors in the home.

On a less somber note, I love that icon!

Thanks so much! I was obviously in an unhappy-drabble mood last night.

Why I love drabbles is ability of their authors to capture feelings in emotions in just 100 words, it always amaze me. This one is very good. I was listening to Sigur Ros while reading (unintentionally!), and it gave it even more depth.

I hope Remus had a good birthday.. : )

Thanks so much! I hope Remus had a much happier birthday than this drabble. Hopefully someone Snape brought him chocolate.

Yes! And hopefully it wasn't chocolate what made the day for Remus and Snape.

Once again, you've done it. What a powerful image of mourning. Maybe if Remus looks different and feels different, he'll wake up one morning and things will be different...but maybe not.

Well done.

Thanks so much...I've known people in mourning to do far more drastic things.
