Title: After
Author: [info]cruisedirector
Characters: Lupin and his parents
Words: 100
Challenge: #28, Life after death.

His mother is sobbing, kneeling on the floor with her hands in fists. His father is shouting: surely there must be something that can be done! Don't they understand that Remus is only a child!

It's all a bit hazy to the boy lying on the blankets, stiff with pain from the gash in his side. He cannot understand why his parents are so upset. Death raced behind him, bared its fangs, took a bite out of him, and yet he lives. He looked into those murderous jaws and escaped them.

How could anything ever be so terrible as that?

Thanks so much -- for his parents, that had to be almost like losing a child, in a way, no more hopes of grandkids and month-long vacations in a villa.

WOah! that was wonderfully done and so dark I love it! Its just touching how in his innocence he is all happy just to be alive, while his parents know that somethings are worse then death...

Thank you! I think in his case it isn't worse than death -- they worked hard to give him a life, to make sure he went to Hogwarts -- but I can only imagine what they went through...

He SO doesn't know what's coming, yeah? But at least he'll have seven years of friendship soon.

Even knowing what's coming, I wonder whether, in the hours after you almost died, anything seems scarier than death itself. It always surprises me how many people write suicidal Remus; if he survived this, and he James' death and Sirius in Azkaban, he can survive the Veil.

I'm of the same mind on the issue, but I suppose the flip side could be justified:

A) It's so well written that who cares (I think here of the piece that has him apparating into Sirius' coffin).

B) Sirius' death is well expressed as the straw that breaks the camel's back (more difficult to do well, but if well written, I'd give it the benefit of the doubt).

C) It's more of a big picture issue (Remus looks forward and sees nothing and it simply grows ever more wearisome to draw breath - what for?)

None of those are my take on him, but hey, I'm not Remus. I actually wrote some Remus as a child for my Innocence of Youth series back in the day. I didn't need to touch on these issues, though, given the age range I was dealing with. I think I sketched some scenes of him at two or four and maybe at eight and ten or eleven.

Thanks so much! It's not a happy situation, even having survived it...

Thanks very much -- that was my sense, but a child wouldn't have a way of understand that until he'd experienced it, I think.
