I'm sure everyone knows that submissions are often really slow here. I mean really slow. The site has also been seriously neglected in other ways too. Basically, I've been busy with college, work, internships, and life in general and just haven't had the time to care for my own site.

I have several positions I need filled:

Moderators – Read over submissions to the archive and approve them if they meet our rules.
Site Editor (1) – Help us upgrade our informational pages.

Event Coordinator (1) – Your job: Plan and oversee fun things and events for the site!

Newsletter Editor (1) – Bring back our newsletter!

Also, to be clear… there's no set hours here. I appreciate any time you would be able to give me. Real life always comes first!

Position: Moderators

Job Description: Read over stories that have been submitted to the site for correct spelling, grammar, punctuation and other writing mechanics. We grade stories here at, about, or above the 10^th grade level. So I'm asking that only those with sound writing and grammar skills apply.

Once you're comfortable with reading over stories, you'll be also adding characters and categories to the site.

Applicant restrictions:

- 18 and older. (Preferred, but not enforced.)

- Author on the site for at least six months and have at least one (1) story posted. (No exceptions.)

To apply:

Include:

- Links to three (3) stories or writing examples that demonstrate your writing skill. That can be on this site or on another site. Please no attachments.

- Explain what you feel the biggest problem is in fan fiction or writing on the web in general. Please be specific.

- What are some things you feel this site could do better? What would you do differently?

- You will have to reject stories in this site and will have to explain to the author why their story was rejected. How would you write the rejection letter?

Position: Site Editor

Job Description: This is a temporary position, but one we really need help with. I need help reading over informational parts of the site, such as our FAQ, Rules, Help, and other pages to check for issues, outdated material, even grammar and spelling. Also, I need your help to update these sections, reword things, or write new sections so our help pages are – well – helpful!

I need help with the following sections especially:

- Frequently Asked Questions

- Rules

- Warnings for adult material.

- Definitions of our genres, story types, and warnings

Applicant restrictions:

- 18 and older. (Preferred, but not enforced.)

- Author on the site for at least six months and have at least one (1) story posted. (No exceptions.)

Position: Event Coordinator

Job Description: We used to have some pretty fun challenges and events on this site. Then Marohi and I became too busy with college and it started taking longer and longer for us to judge and award the winners or simply come up with things. Your job is to think up new events and challenges and to help us oversee them.

I would like to have events and/or challenges for:

- Major Holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.

- "Fun" Holidays such as April Fools and Halloween

- National Novel Writers Month

- Banned Books Week

You'll also be working closely with the newsletter person to pick out of any monthly features and the help take care of the whole "Front Desk" page. (Never could quite figure out what to put there, to tell you the truth.)

Job Description: We used to have a monthly newsletter that kept everyone up-to-date on what happened here at Lunaescence. Unfortunately, it died. We were short on time and submissions for the newsletter were sometimes pretty sparse. Your job is to help us bring back the newsletter. You'll also be working closely with the event coordinator so the right news gets into the newsletter.

Applicant restrictions:

- 18 and older. (Preferred, but not enforced.)

- Author on the site for at least six months and have at least one (1) story posted. (No exceptions.)

Help Wanted

Hi everyone!
This is the SOS I promised a couple weeks ago; we need more moderators to help read over incoming stories and chapters. (Sorry for the wait. It's been a hectic week.)

Moderators

The Job: Moderators read over incoming chapters and stories for problems with spelling, punctuation, and/or grammar. If the submission is okay, they validate the story or chapter so it appears on the site. If there is problems, they send the author an e-mail explaining what was wrong and then deletes the chapter or story. You can choose to maintain only certain areas of the archive or you can choose to handle anything that comes in.

Moderators can also post News and Announcements on the front page.

Once you're comfortable with the job and I'm comfortable with your knowledge of the archive, I'll expand your abilities so you can add categories and characters.

Limitations: I'm asking that only people who have been on Lunaescence 6 months or longer please apply.

Hours/Time/Quota: Anything you can give me or feel like giving me. Real life always comes first.

Have you submitted a story and it's not up yet? That's probably because we haven't gotten to you yet. ^_^; We are overflowing with submissions and have not been able to get to all of them yet.

We're trying our best to read through all of them, but it takes time. Sometime next week, I'll be putting out the SOS for more mods, but I need to get my final exams done first before I start the process.

Here at Lunaescence, "Sweeps" is a mass cleaning of stories with issues that have somehow made it in, despite our rules for spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Unfortunately, I don't have time to do it myself this year.

I'm seeking a team of individuals with good skills in spelling and grammar and are willing to spend a weekend or two helping me clean. You will basically be moderators, but the only job I'm asking you to do will be cleaning.

I do ask that only those who have been on Luna 6 months or longer apply.

People using @comcast.net e-mail addresses will no longer be able to receive our e-mails. Comcast has decided that all e-mail from our host is spam and is no longer allowed.

We're talking with our hosts right now to see if they can fix this, but there's not too much that can be done in the meantime on our end.

In the meantime, existing authors who use an @comcast.net e-mail address should change their e-mail address if they wish to receive e-mails from us. Recent members who registered, but didn't get their signup e-mails can contact us and we'll get a new password set up for you. (Be sure to include your comcast address and your new address.)

Hit Counters are here!

I'm having a bit of insomnia, so I spent the day working on getting a hit counter for stories installed. Right now, it's counting per chapter, but I hope to have the rest of it installed tomorrow afternoon. (Mmm, coffee.)

Since popularity contests annoy Sally and me, these statistics are only available to the author.

To see how many times your story has been viewed, please go to your "Manage Stories" page in your user menu and select "View Chapters."

Report System

Sally and I have been tossing around the idea of creating a report system. It won't be coming for a bit, since we have other things we need to finish first, but right now it's in the very early planning stages.

Report System - What it is supposed to do.
Allow visitors and members to report stories, series, challenges, reviews, users, or general problems with the web site via an online form.

The form will ask for an e-mail address and/or record the user ID if they're logged in. It'll automatically record what was reported along with the date/time. There will be a drop-down menu with a list of common violations. If the violation is plagiarism, a spot for a proof URL will appear so we can verify whether or not it was really stolen.

Finally, there will be a box for any comments the reporter might have.

Extra junk

Add a note to the form warning the reporter that we prefer to hear about plagiarism only once and from the original author if possible. (Since we know the original author isn't available all the time.)
E-mail the report to the admins; record it in a database for a monthly incidence report.
Add some sort of "Big Brother" threat to discourage abuse.
Offer a direct URL to the specific report form in case they need to tell someone else how to report something.

Whew. ^_^; Anything else we should include? Anything we should skip?

Musicals category

Hey guys! Gotta go get ready for work, but wanted to let you know that I've added a Musicals category to the archive as requested. For now, it has Hairspray, RENT, and Wicked. Look for it under the new (kind of new) Miscellaneous category.

I'm not familiar with these musicals, so if someone could shoot me a list of characters, I would appreciate it. =)

Story help: Summaries by LeBeau

If you are wondering why people won't read your stories, take a look at the structure of the summary and the way the story is presented. One of the biggest ways to turn readers off a story is a bad summary.

A bad summary includes phrases like: "R&R", "I'm not good at these, so read anyways, plzkthnks", and the classic "No summary, just read."

A summary is a brief overview of your story and how well it is written. Proper grammar, punctuation, spelling and capitalization will help have people interested in your stories.

I've posted this before and it's happening again: When you submit a chapter of a chaptered story, please wait until it is cleared BEFORE submitting another chapter. If there are problems with one chapter, then there may be problems with the others, so WAIT. Problems can then be fixed based on feedback given.

Submitting multiple one-shots is ok, but don't do it to the extreme. Thanks guys!

School hasn't been out for the summer that long and already we're having a problem with flamers. *sigh* Don't get it, but what do I know.

We've added two new options to your profiles to help protect you:

- Review Control – This will allow you to disallow all reviews or just anonymous ones.

- Author Contact Form Privacy – Like review control, this lets you set who is allowed to use the "contact author" links on your author profile.

To set these new options, just log in and edit your profile. Anyone who is a beta reader should probably avoid shutting the form off entirely or else give people another way to contact you.

If you've been inside the Movies & TV forum, you may have noticed we're trying a little experiment. We've grouped shows and movies together by franchise and then made links to the categories inside.

We did this because sometimes people don't realize that there are other selections inside some of those series. Before, we either made a lump category for everything or else made a separate section for each, like we did for Final Fantasy inside the Gaming section.

I'd like your opinion about whether we should be doing this to other categories or keeping things as they are.

New Option: Disallow Reviews

We're in the process of adding a new option for our members: Disallowing Reviews.

School hasn't been out for the summer that long and already we're having a problem with flamers. The new option will allow you to disallow all reviews or just anonymous ones. We have it added to your user options page, but it will be the weekend before we will have the chance to add it to the reviews.

Until then, now is your chance to pick your new settings. ^^

EDIT #2: I've added privacy controls for the author contact form too. Beta readers should note that they need to provide an alternative way for authors to contact them if they turn the form off.

I'm really sorry for vanishing on everyone for April and now most of May. College and serious real-life issues made April a very difficult month for us. I can't promise that we're back 100%, but we will give it our all.

Plagiarism

------------------------

We've had yet another case of plagiarism here at Lunaescence. I have to stress that plagiarism is a zero tolerance offense here and will result in immediate banning when discovered.

So what is Plagiarism? It's defined as taking someone's story, poem, or other writing and passing it off as your own. In fanfiction, this usually involves taking someone's whole story and posting it as your own. Taking what doesn't belong to you is stealing. And take it from someone who has been plagiarised in real life: It hurts as much as if someone broke into your house and stole stuff that's really important to you.

And don't think you won't get caught just because we're a small. There are groups like

stop_plagiarism on LiveJournal that keep tabs even on this site.

I guess I have to say this again: Plagiarism is a Zero-Tolerance offense.

Plagiarism is defined as taking someone else's story, poem, or other writing and claiming it as your own. Taking what doesn't belong to you is called "stealing."

Regarding Flaming
------------------------
Lately, we've been noticing more people are flaming stories because they're "boring", "disgusting", "stupid", "dumb", or "gross," or for whatever other stupid reason. I think I speak for everyone when I say: Oh, grow up!

Three people have been banned so far and a few more are pushing it. We will not be bothering to send warnings out before we ban, so be forewarned. We don't have time or interest in babysitting.

Clarification regarding collection fics
------------------------
Last month, Jasson posted a note regarding request or collection fics. Due to confusion, I thought I'd better clarify our position a little bit.

We allow Collections or Books of One Shots. Those are fine.

What we don't want to see are things being posted to the archive that say "Tell me what to write! Here's the fandoms I know" and have nothing else in them. No stories, no content. Those are considered ads and therefore spam.

We'll happily take your Collection fic or book of one-shots once you actually have a story.

If you'd like to create a book of one shots or a collection, but need suggestions or requests in order to start, post it to the Coffee House, Shamless Advertising, or Writer's Help Center forums on our message board.

Link Banners for Luna

This probably isn't much of a challenge, but we're looking for link buttons for Lunaescence. As good as Sally and I are at layouts and programming, we really stink at making link buttons and banners to promote the site.

Genres, Story Types, and Warnings

Due to the number of questions regarding what our different story types, genres, and warnings mean, Jasson is attempting to define everything and put them in the dictionary for easy access.

While we put in so many to make sure everyone is covered, it makes it really difficult for us to define everything.

We could use all the help we can get!

- Moved Final Fantasy 10-2 out from inside Final Fantasy 10 to the main Gaming category so it would be more visible.

- Challenges now records the date they're issued and will update your penname in the event it's changed.

- The archive now enforces the 750 character limit on summaries. Attempting to post a longer summary will now generate an error and send you back to the preview screen.

- Updated the links page with helpful writing and research links along with links to other fan fiction archives.
