About:

1. Join

lumos_sorting and enter your application as a new post in this community. This is a FRIENDS ONLY community so you have to join in order to see the entries. The posts are also moderated, so please be patient if your applications are not approved right away.

2. Please be sure to copy & paste everything from the scrollbox below. (We are already making it easier for those of you who are not that inclined towards html.) Only the questions should be in bold.

3. Applicants may alter their applications until the first vote has been cast, after which time you are not allowed to make alterations.

4. Answer all of the questions as thoroughly as possible. The more we know about you, the easier it will be for us to sort you into the proper house! (We recommend that you write at least 5 sentences per question, because this is the average length.)

5. Students are allowed one vote only on each application, and they should BOLD the house they are sorting the applicant in. Only those who are sorted may vote. Five points are awarded for sorting. Please put your house in the subject line of your vote, as extra points will be awarded to the top sorting house every week. When you are sorted, please recommend Lumos Sorting to your friends, as you will earn referral points for that. Extra points are also awarded to the top referring house every week.

6. Students may change their votes on an application no more than once.

7. Please write the following at the end of your application: "By the way, Argus Filch is my dad..." so we know you've read the rules.

8. Plagiarism is definitely not allowed. You will be squibbed the moment we prove you stole from other applications.

9. Please remember to keep the sorting process courteous. There is no need to tear anyone down here. We're all here to have fun, so remember to keep the voting clean. If you were the first person to squib, do explain your reason/s why politely. The applicant does have a right to know your reason/s for rejecting him/her.

10. Students are allowed to use signature tags in

lumos_sorting, but please keep them no larger than 350px width, 233px height.

11. The Deputy Headmistress will sort you on Saturdays. At this time, you may join your common room, as well as any other subsidiaries of Lumos that are offered to students. A maximum of five or ten applications will be posted every week (it depends on the number of applicants) on Sunday. If it is rejected, you will receive an email notification along with the reasons for rejection. If it is not and you still do not see it in the sorting community, that simply means that your application is still in queue.

12. If an applicant receives a Squib vote, he or she may alter their application to add information ONE TIME ONLY. After the first alteration, if the applicant is Squibbed again, they are allowed to reapply once. Only a majority of squib votes will earn you a squib stamp. If you have a majority of votes for a house and a few squibs, you are still sorted into that house.

13. When sorting applicants, students are allowed to discuss the applications in their common rooms, but please do not attempt to influence the votes of other students in any way or fashion. We want to afford applicants fair and unbiased votes, thereby sorting them into the correct house.

14. For the applicants, please do not screen your votes.

15. Applicants who are offended or upset by responses to their application should do one of two things:

Contact one of the Staff members via e-mail, IM, etc. and register a complaint. While we do strive to be sure that all of our members vote in a courteous manner, what offends you is often a matter of perception. Therefore, the staff members are here to help.
Applicants are allowed to comment and respond in their own posts, but like our own students, we require you to be as courteous as possible. If you feel that you cannot comment without doing so, then you merely need to submit your complaint to one of the Staff members. Contact information is available, generally, through the journal links in the sidebar of each of the Lumos communities.

Lastly, we at Lumos expect our students to conduct themselves courteously when sorting, therefore we also expect our applicants to conduct themselves accordingly, REGARDLESS OF AGE.

SORTING FAQ

1. WHAT IS "PUSHING"?

The term "pushing" is used to describe an applicant whose answers are obviously trying to get him or her into a certain house. For example, most commonly, applicants push for Slytherin. In an application pushing for Slytherin, the applicant generally tries to exacerbate what they think are his or her Slytherin qualities.

Example: "I love snakes and my favourite character is Severus Snape and I'm so evil!"

Pushing comes in many forms, and is largely open to interpretation. Lumos respects the varied opinions of its students regarding "pushing" and will not interfere unless a student goes beyond the line and actually insults/exchanges insults with an applicant. Let us remember that Lumos is founded with courtesy and fun in mind.

2. WHEN SORTING PEOPLE, DO WE NEED TO EXPLAIN OUR VOTES?

When sorting people, it is recommended that you explain your reason/s for your vote, but it is not required. Considering the amount of voters we have, it is very likely that your reasons were already mentioned by a previous voter and most people here (if not all) are not fond of redundancy. But if you have a new point to add, do put in an effort to enlighten the applicant. Put yourself in the applicant's situation. If you were in her/his place, you would like a good and polite analysis, no?

3. DO WE STILL NEED TO EXPLAIN OUR SQUIB VOTES?

If you are the first and/or only person to vote squib, it is only courteous and mature to do so. Also, once again, please remember to be polite.

4. WHAT IS "SQUIBBING"?

In Lumos, we allow applicants to reapply if they are squibbed on their first shot at an application. To squib someone means that they are not quite Lumos material. This could be because you can't get a "vibe" from them, leading you to place them in any particular house. Another could be blatant pushing for a certain house. Since good english, courtesy and an adequate amount of dedication are also considered important, we might also squib if the applicant did not seem to understand these things (i.e. insults, bad grammar and spelling, rushed applications). Basically, Students can squib applicants for a variety of reasons, although at Lumos, we ask that squibbing be a last resort for students.

We want students to read each application, searching for a house for that applicant. You should only squib someone as a last resort. Of course, conversely, students should not vote an applicant into one of the four houses simply because he or she doesn't want to squib them. It's perfectly alright to squib, so long as it is warranted and you are polite during the squibbing process.

[Note: Both applicants and sorters should be be careful when it comes to this question. For the applicants, you must prove to us how much you know about the houses in canon (which is why we want you to cite examples), and at the same time, give us your own analysis of each house since not all houses are discussed in depth in the books. For the sorters, remember the proper definition of "bashing." When the applicant gives negative points/examples (especially when they are valid points), you are to remember that each person is entitled to his/her opinion, and not squib them just because you disagree.]

[07] If you could have a shop in Diagon Alley, what would the customers see in there? Who would be your target clientele (purebloods, sports enthusiasts, bookworms, etc.)?

[08] If you could trade lives with someone for one year, who would it be and why? If not, why not?

[09] If you were given the chance, would you be willing to be the Minister of Magic? Why, or why not?

[10] If you were put in the position of deciding whether the magical world would continue hiding from Muggles, or be revealed to their society, which would you choose and why?

[11] How do you feel about the use of unforgivables in the face of a war? Can either side (Order of the Phoenix & Death Eaters) be justified, and if so which would you be on? If you think that it is wrong to use them in war, is there ever an instance where you would consider it 'right' to use an Unforgivable?
