Picspam: Wizard of Oz vs Tin Man

For the tenth challenge (compare & contrast) at [info]picspammy. This was a rather hard challenge for me and I wished that I could have gotten this posted sooner than the LAST DAY of the challenge!

I hope I did these fandoms justice; Tin Man is so much more detailed, has more characters, and has more of a story line than the Wizard of Oz does.

DG (Tin Man) | Dorothy (Wizard of Oz)
In the more modern version, DG (which stands for Dorothy Gale), is a waitress at a small-town dinner in rural Kansas. DG feels like she doesn't belong in Kansas and longs for the place where she will belong; although she doesn't have a clue to what it is.

Dorothy is more of a singer in the Wizard of Oz. She is a day-dreamer fantasizing about a land 'over the rainbow'. During her adventures in Oz, she will find out that the grass is not always greener on the other side; she will also gain a better appreciation for her friends, her family, and her home back in Kansas.

Dorothy (Wizard of Oz) | Dorothy Gale (Tin Man)
Examples of the character of Dorothy in both versions. In Tin Man, Dorothy Gale is DG's ancestor in the O.Z. She was the first to cross from one world and into the other. Dorothy Gale is the secret to gaining the emerald.

Emily/Hank & DG's Real Family (Tin Man) | Auntie Em & Uncle Henry (Wizard of Oz)
Emily and Hank were parental nurturing robots that were sent with DG when she left the O.Z. to protect DG from Azkadelia's rising power. They were the ones that raised DG as their own until it was time for her to go back to the O.Z. and defeat the evil witch. She is now welcomed by her real family after the evil witch's powers are defeated.

Auntie Em & Uncle Henry are the guardians of Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz; they are farmers and didn't really have too much of a role in the movie.

Glitch, Cain, and Raw (Tin Man) | Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion (Wizard of Oz)
Glitch, Cain, and Raw are the equivalent to the Wizard of Oz's Scarecrow, Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion. They help DG throughout her quest in the O.Z. until the end of the story, when she is reunited with her parents.

The Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion are Dorothy's friends who also need something from the Wizard so they travel with her to the Emerald City. She says heartfelt goodbyes to each one when she has to go back to Kansas at the end of the movie. I would also like to add that their "Kansas counterparts" were hired hands who helped around the farm and where also considered to be apart of Dorothy's family.

Tutor "Toto" (Tin Man) | Toto (Wizard of Oz)
Tutor is DG's instructor who teaches DG how to effectively use her magic; he is called "Toto" because young DG wasn't able to pronounce "Tutor". He has the ability to turn into a dog throughout the whole journey.

Toto is Dorothy's beloved dog; he was taken by Miss Gultch at the beginning of the movie but ran back to Dorothy and also traveled with her to Oz.

Sheriff Gultch (Tin Man) | Elmira Gultch (Wizard of Oz)
Sheriff Gultch didn't have much of a role in Tin Man, other than giving Dorothy a speeding ticket when she was working at the dinner.

Miss Gultch is the mean old bitty who wanted to take Toto away from Dorothy because he was causing a ruckus with her livestock/pets. Unfortunately for her, Toto got the better of her and ran off to go back to Dorothy when she was riding her bicycle away from Dorothy's farmhouse.

Evil Witch (Tin Man) | Wicked Witch of the West (Wizard of Oz)
The Evil Witch possessed Azkadelia at an early age and until the end of the movie, she is portrayed as the "bad guy".

The Wicked Witch of the West will do anything to get her hands on her sister's ruby slippers—unfortunately for her, they went to Dorothy when her sister died. Now it is her mission to get those ruby slippers for herself, even it if may cost Dorothy her life.

Evil Monkey Minions (Tin Man) | (Wizard of Oz)
The evil witches' minions who do the dirty work of spying on our heroic main characters throughout their journey; they are the main cause of most of the problems along the journey.

Lavender Eyes (Tin Man) | Glenda, Good Witch of the North (Wizard of Oz)
Lavender Eyes is the Queen of the O.Z. and the good ruler who was taken down by the evil witch when she possessed her oldest daughter.

Glenda helps Dorothy find her way to the Wizard and then tells her the secret for getting her heart's desire—to get back to Kansas—at the end of the movie.

Mystic Man (Tin Man) | Professor Marvel/Wizard (Wizard of Oz)
Mystic Man is the cheap psychic in town who is drugged up on Azkadelia's vapors. He doesn't really know much about what he is doing, but he refused to reveal to the evil witch where he sent DG after she came to ask him about her mother. He met an unfortunate end for his bravery.

Professor Marvel is the psychic who warns Dorothy—when she runs away—about her Auntie Em, who was missing her and was ill with worry. The Wizard helps the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion find what they thought they were 'missing' throughout the whole story.

Kansas (Tin Man) | (Wizard of Oz)

O.Z. (Tin Man) | Oz (Wizard of Oz)
O.Z. was depicted as more of an alternate universe in Tin Man than the dream like state that Oz was shown as in the Wizard of Oz.

Tornado (Tin Man) | (Wizard of Oz)
The tornado was the method of travel between the worlds in Tin Man, while it did the same purpose for bringing Dorothy into Oz.

Yellow Brick Road (Wizard of Oz) | "Old Road" (Tin Man)
The yellow brick road is the main focus throughout the Wizard of Oz, while the subsequent version of the same road in Tin Man, was just part of a scene in order for DG to find her parents.

Munchcans (Tin Man) | Munchkins (Wizard of Oz)
The Munchcans did not have a very big character role in Tin Man, and their purpose was extremely different than in the Wizard of Oz. They were the first people that DG encountered when she arrived in the O.Z; this being the only similarity to the Wizard of Oz.

The Munchkins welcomed Dorothy to Oz because she killed the Wicked Witch of the East and showed her to the yellow brick road, in which she took to get to the Emerald City to see the Wizard.

Hot Air Balloon (Tin Man) | (Wizard of Oz)
Both versions use an example of the hot air balloon in some way. In Tin Man, it was a method of travel for Ahamo (DG's father) and how he first arrived in the O.Z. In the Wizard of Oz, it was the way that the Wizard arrived and left Oz.

*CLAPS* this makes me want to watch both all over again. Great job, *LOVE* the picture collages. Cain is *sooo* hunky and Glitch is *SUPER* adorable. I also wish they would have had Zooey sing she's got such a beautiful classic voice. Oh well. *LOVE* both. :D Great job!!!

Never thought of her as "Glinda" for some reason I was thinking more Ozma, but most people even in the storytellings forget about Ozma. <-She's a fav of mine. Babbling.

Reading this has caused me to realize two things I never noticed before about Tin Man. I never got the Sheriff Gultch/Elmira Gultch connection until just now, sad to say. I don't know how I missed it, but I completely did. And two, It wasn't until I was looking at the picture of the Wizard's State Fair balloon that I realized "Ahamo" is "Omaha" spelled backwards. Those clever writers, sneaking things in like that. And don't forget, Ahamo also arrived in the O.Z. via balloon, just as the Wizard did.

Thanks for the lovely picspam, I know I learned a few new things from it.

Thanks so much for this, it's really awesome and fun to look at.

I just have one nitpick, hope you don't mind, but Dorothy's name happens to be spelled wrong... :)

I thought it looked wrong! *facepalm* Thank you so much. *fixes*

Thank you dear! Oh yes, it did take a long time! The hardest part for me was finding pictures in Tin Man to go along with the Wizard of Oz. ♥

This is really cool. I've only ever done this in my head while watching the show. I loved putting the pictures side by side. There are a some things I would add though. Like gone into more about Auntie Em and Uncle Henry (which is probably only because of the later books), and how the scarecrow, tin man, and cowardly lion in the movie were the hands on the farm and kind of part of the family, which you had in pictures, but not words.

Beautiful pictures though.

Thank you. This challenge was by far the hardest for me, but I am glad that this worked out so well. I actually haven't read the books, I've only seen these two film interpretations, so that is why I didn't really get too much into her aunt and uncle. Oh yes! I am not that good with words, but I will surely add that! Thanks again. :)
