Good Omens Movie Rumours
Hello, I'm new to the community, but moving on.

I was recently listening to a interview with Terry Gilliam and the interview touched upon the Good Omens film. Apparently he is trying to start filming this winter. If you're interested in hearing the interview (sorry, no transcript is available), you can check it out here.

Oh god. He's going to make a movie after all?

(And welcome to the group. I would've said that first, but the movie idea is sort of...terrifying and froze up my brain.)

At least it's not going to be Robin Williams any more...

Which part of the interview mentions the movie?

I'm very apprehensive about the idea of the movie being made, mostly because Gilliam wanted to cast Robin Williams as Aziraphale. Even if Williams doesn't play the role (please God!), the very fact that Gilliam thought he'd be right for the part instills me with dread!

First, before I get distracted: welcome! ;]

Now ... eep. Gilliam is so *wrong* for GO. He's far too macabre and ... he gives me indigestion of the soul.

Honestly, having thought long and hard about it, I don't like the idea of a movie being made -- I mean, *I'd* like to see it, but I don't want, for instance, Lower Tadfield being invaded by hoards of squeeing movie-verse-only fen. 'Cause y'know any movie is gonna differ from the book, just by the nature of converting to a different storytelling medium ...

If a movie *has* to be made, I'm praying that Peter Jackson would take an interest, myself ....

Could we make it closed-membership? Just maybe? Oh, I'm so mean...

The more I think about it, the more terrified I become. A movie could be amazing slashy fun, but...it could also go horribly, horribly wrong. I really don't want my mental image of Crowley (or anyone else for that matter) damaged in that way.

Update, after listening to the interview (which is annoying and tedious as hell). Seems like Johnny Depp is out of the running for Crowley now. Thank the gods. Gilliam essentially says that he wants big names because that will ensure funding - which he doesn't yet have enough of - and if he has to settle for lesser known people then it will have a much smaller budge. And therefore it might not attract as many screaming fangirls to our little fandom. For which I will be eternally grateful. Nevertheless... I stand by my previous statement - nomovienomovienovmovieletgilliamdropdeadfirst

I always thought Depp would be great for the role, not considering fangirls. He's innovative, actually thinking about the roles to develop them beyond the script, think Scissorhands and Sparrow.

I don't disagree that Depp is a fine actor, I like everything he's been in. But I also am glad to know that if this movie gets made, he won't be the reason everyone sees it.

Wah, I love watching Johnny Depp no matter what role he's playing--*I* think he's a brilliant actor, and that's at least half of the reason why I approved of him as Crowley. So now I am sad.

And Kenneth Branagh needs to play Aziraphale, dammit. Again with the brilliant actor thing. And he's not too young or too pretty, either.

My but we are a hostile fandom. For my part, I'm interested to see somebody else's take on GO--what else would you call fanfiction? Come on, it'll be fun to see things on-screen. Whatever you think of the HP movies, it's got to be exciting seeing Hogwarts and all that, you know?

Also, we can claim fandom seniority and be utter book snobs at new people who Have It All Wrong. And point out differences and errors.

Look at the LOTR fandom--yeah, it has its share of squealing movie-spawned Legolas fangirls, but it also has freaking Elvish scholars.

I agree with you completely.
Maybe he's not the director we all would have chosen, and maybe the actors won't be what we all want, but, remembering how long they've been trying to make this movie, I'll still be damn excited to see it!

I'm a very visual person (which is why I adore everyone's brilliant fanart) and the idea of getting to see my favorite angel and demon go frolicking about and stopping the armaggedon makes me bounce in my seat. (Okay, so maybe no one actually -frolics-...)

A guess what I'm really trying to say is...I agree with htebazytook and hope that a movie gets made.

*sincerely hopes no one strangles her*

Yes, I agree too. Sure, one half of me is terrified that they might royally fuck it up, but the other half is bouncing up and down in glee at the idea of actually seeing the story unfold on the screen. Also, just think, we will be able to make/watch fanvids! I'm a total fanvid junkie (have downloaded many gigs worth) and already have a handful of songs lined up for GO vids. *fingers crossed that we'll get shots in the movie like I'm imagining* :-)

May I mention Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy?

But yes, part of me also wants a visual GO feast on a big screen.

...Hitchhiker movie kinda killed me. It was going somewhat decently until the corny monologue scene. I hope Anathema will not recieve the same fate as poor Trillian, though I have to admit, it did quite a bit for my inner Ford and Arthur fangirl.

You are right, really. I guess I'm just panicky at the thought of all the Mary-Sues (you should see Pirates of the Caribbean on FF.net these days...it's literally an ocean of them).

But as long as someone hot plays Crowley and he and Aziraphale get to do the hand-clasp at the end, I'm all set. XD And with Neil and Terry helping with the script (they'd better), there are bound to be even more slashy jokes for our enjoyment.

I don't watch movies. Not at all. Therefore, I see nothing positive in the movie plan.

First of all, it'd most likely destroy my mental images of the characters should I be unfortunate enough to run across any pictures. I already have hard time trying to hold onto my images of what they look like; I don't need some actor's face to mess everything up just when I've managed to establish somebody's appearance in my mind.

Secondly, the fangirls -- the horror. Sure, I'm a fangirl, and a very enthusiastic one. However, I can read. And (at least I like to think so) I can write. I do not want to see GO abused by somebody who has never read a whole book in their life and is now trying writing fiction for the very first time. I don't want anybody squeeing all over l_t, either. Sure, some squeeing every now and then is all good and well, if there's a piece of fanart or a fanfic worth it. However, general "ohmigodI'msoinlovewithCrowley" is simply annoying. Never mind Amytessa Ruby-Opal Silverine Angelwing-Ziraphale with her countless sisters.

Thirdly, the errors. Being quite familiar with the HP fandom (and, unfortunately, all the Mary Sues and overly-squeely fangirls there) I've seen more than enough discussion of the differences between the movie and the book. There'll always be purists who never fail to point out every single error (I'd probably be one of them, were I one to watch the movies) and then there are those who have never read the book and write fanfics based on their "knowledge" of the plot and characters that make book-purists shudder in horror. If there is a movie, we'll never stop discussing the stupid mistake of making Aziraphale's eyes brown or whatever errors there are. Never mind the actor choices -- the Apocalypse will actually come before the fen have agreed on whether the guy playing Crowley could have been somebody else.

This is probably a very negative comment. However, as I'm never going to see the movie if there indeed is one, I fail to find anything positive in the possibility of a movie getting made. If this horror does come to pass, I'll creep into some deep dark hole, clutching the book tightly, and regard suspiciously any new additions to the l_t members, trying to claw my eyes off whenever I see another new fic about Amytessa.

I really do know what you mean; being a member of both the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings fandoms, there's a *lot* out there to shudder at.

The only reasons I'm willing to see them make this movie are Neil and Terry themselves. I've read the screenplay Neil already came up with and one thing I noticed was that, despite the fact that the events bore almost no resemblance to that of the book, the characters were still essentially Good Omens. Yes, I would be devastated if they decided to use a story different from the one in the book, but I think the little bits - Aziraphale's eyes, even the gay joke in a different form - would still be there. No, that really wouldn't make up for it if they mutilated the book, but I'd get over it.

I think Neil and Terry would try their best to do the book and their fans justice.

I can understand your way of thinking (Mary-Sues make me sad inside...), but the entire idea of keeping out other people for being inexperienced is the failing of many otherwise intelligent people that I'm acquainted with, and leads to an entire mentality of snobbish superiority.

Also, movies are more seperate entities for me than extensions, and, like you said, spending time obsessing over differences between the book and the movie is just silly and a waste of time. Finally, if one's image of a character is ruined the secend one sees a movie, then the image probably wasn't strong enough to begin with. For example, I can still see many of the HP characters the way I could before the movies.

Whereas I somewhat agree with the last statement, I do feel I have to add to that.

Strong character images are important, but films will always have an impact. Seeing the Lord of the Rings films ruined the image I had in my mind of those characters, and they were lodged in there since I was 7. I have read that book god knows how many times. Now I struggle, because sometimes I see the bleedin actors. I for one, am extremely snobbish when it comes to my fandoms; I don't think there is anything wrong with that. There is plent of stuff out there other people get to be superior about all day, I like being purist. On the other hand I am very tolerant.

I don't care what people write about, I just don't click it. Seeing as how well this community does I don't think a bunch of Gracefull_angels and Foxy_demons will be able to ruin that. There is always good fic out there, it's just rare and you have to look very hard to find it. Which is why I like this community so much.
Of course, it's all purely personal. I would love to see a film, if it were the way I wanted it to be. This film will not be what I want.

Everyone has their own image in their head. Casting will have an impact on that. The film will be hollywood-ized, even if it isn't shot in hollywood, because that's the way films are being filmed. By that I basically mean everything that is used in films nowadays, from plot-angles to story-lines to camera angles to filters and script and all the rest (I hate films so much, but I still have a degree in it causing me to be anal and nit-picky and generally hate films)

I want a film.
But I don't think the flavour of a Pratchett book can be brought to the big screen. Neil's writing won't change that.

So I want a film, but not that one, whatever it will be.

I don't worry about the fandom on the net. After all, one twat born every minute. I'm sure this community is made of stronger stuff than that. :)

(Though I'll admit I would hate for people to visit St. James Park, the bleedin tourists annoy me already when I am having a break there, hehe)
