Dr. Grace Holloway

Dr. Grace Holloway usually doesn't top many popular companion lists, probably because the TV movie isn't exactly well-loved. I didn't think it was too bad, and really enjoyed McGann and Dr. Grace Holloway, who I feel is definitely underrated. So, I hope you enjoy my spotlight on the amazing Grace Holloway (oh, Fox, you and your puns).

The Original Blonde (For the companion Vicki)

Vicki -- not short for anything, as she tells Ian and Barbara in her first story -- is a companion of the First Doctor, coming in with The Rescue and taking flight in The Myth Makers. She's not a companion who gets a lot of attention -- very little at all, really -- and for my life I don't understand why this is. Especially as the majority of her episodes have not been set on fire. I find her spectacular, and I thought I should share her with you without further delay.

This is Vicki.
This is a pretty accurate assessment of Vicki's dynamic with the Doctor.

Bernice Summerfield

A late entry into the companion posting month, I realised halfway through writing this that I have listened to very few of the audio adventures featuring Benny Summerfield. This therefore a partial account of the awesomeness that is Bernice Summerfield.

Companion Love Month (Pinch Hit): Barbara Wright

I can't tell you how thrilled I am to have the chance to participate in Companion Love Month after having originally missed out on the opportunity. And I am especially thrilled to be able to express my love for one of the most brilliant companions in all of Doctor Who history. So, without further ado:

If you think classic Who companions were nothing but useless screamers, I have two words for you.

Barbara. Wright.

Companion Love Month (slightly extended): Dorothea "Dodo" Chaplet

It really pained me that Dodo wasn't on the master list of Companion Lovin'. I know she's unlikely to ever be anyone's favourite, but I feel that if she's given a proper chance, you can end up really liking her.

I may be a little biased, as when I decided to start watching old skool after S1 of the new series ended, by chance one of the first stories I saw was The Ark. Not only did I like One, Dodo, and Steven, but I also became convinced of the necessity of a multi-team TARDIS. I still haven't finished all of Dodo's serials - two are completely burninated, so I haven't got up the will to see those two yet, though a very good number of her episodes survive - but the more I think about her, the more I like her. So, let's have a picspam, some info, some links, some vids, and some fic!

Picspam, first! Dodo is quite lovely, and especially lovely with Steven and with One. All photos from Tragical History Tour or Shillpages, with one screencap by me )

Fact file: Dodo, partly cribbed from Wiki, with info on her episodes and how to fill in the missing blanks )

Mod Post: Anyone want to fill the gaps?

Our incredibly awesome list of companion posts (immediately below this one) is sadly missing two beloved companions: Barbara and Mickey. Is anyone interested in doing either of them? If so, please comment -- it would be great if our list were complete. Also, if we've left anyone out who you think should be listed, and you'd care to rectify that situation, let me know. (No fanfic characters, please.)

Companion Posting Month -- The Master List

April 2008 was Companion Posting Month, when we were treated to posts of great love about nearly every companion in Doctor Who history. And the first week of May was TARDIS week. So here it is – the Master List. There’s an astonishing amount of good stuff here. Many thanks to all who contributed, and special thanks to [info]doyle_sb4, who conceived and organized the event.

TARDIS Week post of random fun

FIRST: My favorite TARDIS picture. Remember before Voyage of the Damned aired, when everyone was going on about Astrid being an anagram for TARDIS? Well, the Sun knows how to tell the story:

NEXT: Random interesting things I learned about the Tardis while waiting for The Poison Sky to…appear.

From Wikipedia's TARDIS article:

The Doctor “unofficially borrowed” the TARDIS when he first left Gallifrey. It was an old and outmoded model even then. (Proof that the Doctor is in fact a real schlemiel. What, he couldn’t steal a new one?)

The Doctor’s bedroom has never been mentioned or seen (an omission that’s been rectified 5,000 times over in fanfic).

The TARDIS came with an instruction manual that the Sixth Doctor claims to have started reading but never finished. (Proof that the Sixth Doctor and I have something in common.)

There have been TARDIS-shaped video games, play tents for children, toy boxes, cookie jars, book ends, key chains, and even a police-box-shaped bottle for a TARDIS bubble bath. (Note to the world: I would like some TARDIS bubble bath for my birthday, please.)

The BBC owns a patent on the police-box image after the Metropolitan Police failed in a challenge to their claim. (Well, I read somewhere the Star Trek franchise copyrighted the words, “Make it so” – so why not this?)

A 'Turdis' is apparently a UK industry-wide nickname for a single re-circulating chemical toilet unit on account of its resemblance to the Doctor's time machine. (And forevermore shall the port-o-potty thusly be known in my household.)

MOVING ON: A clip in which Four explains to Leela how it’s possible that the Tardis is bigger on the inside. (Otherwise known to Kids in the Hall fans as the "I'm crushing your head theory of Time and Relative Dimensions in Space):

HERE, Ed Thomas, designer of the New School Tardis, gives us a tour.

AND LASTLY: Pop culture knows no shame: The Timelords/KLF did a mystifyingly cheesy video to a mashup song called Doctorin’ the Tardis. Recycling -- not always good for the environment, but here it is anyway.

Being a Scientific Treatise on the Awesomeness of Liz Shaw

(with many apologies for the delay in publication)

Being a Scientific Treatise on the Awesomeness of Dr. Elizabeth Shaw

Abstract:

The subject, one Dr. Elizabeth Shaw, worked for the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce as a civilian scientist for approximately one year, during which time she was closely associated with both Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart and UNIT's mysterious scientific advisor, a man known only as the Doctor. Despite her undeniable contribution to the aims of that prestigious organization, her tale is frequently overlooked when it comes to the academic literature surrounding the Doctor; this paper seeks to remedy this deficit of new information about a singularly fascinating - and undeniably awesome - individual, while opening up new avenues for future research.

Remarkably safe for dial-up users. )

Appendices follow.

Our unsung hero, Sgt Benton

Last Saturday, we witnessed the long awaited return of our beloved UNIT. Though with a few unhappy notes,
1-Now known as "The Unified Intelligence Taskforce"
2-Colonel Mace ??!
3-The Doctor's stiffness towards them
4-And last but not least, the fact that they seem to be recruiting teenagers. Yeah, next thing you know, we'll have the "Adventures of UnIT High!" (shakes head)

Well, allow me to (dare I usedthe phrase) give you all a little Blast from the Past. Back to when UNIT was run by real men. And tell you about a  very particular and loveable man at that....

Mod post: It's TARDIS week; companion posting warp-up

As Companion Posting Month draws to a close, the one companion who's always been there needs some love, too -- the TARDIS! So we're officially declaring it TARDIS week through Friday, May 9th, and you're all invited to post thoughts, pix, fics, recs, factoids, etc., about the companion who's been there through it all.  Please limit yourself to one TARDIS post for the week to avoid excess spammage.

Many thanks to everyone who contributed this past month (and those of you who still have stuff coming), and especially to [info]doyle_sb4, whose idea this was, and who organized it all.  It's been FAB.

I'll be putting together a massive links post to bring all of this together in one place, and it will live in our sidebar forever and ever, so that the companion love never dies. At least, not around here, anyway. ;-D

Little Brain Child: Zoe appreciation, part the third: Zoe games!

Because, you know, why not.

Game the First: Zoe Round Robin!
Self-explanatory, I think; now let's just see if it catches. There's a thread for this in the post, under the first comment; if we manage to get/keep it going long enough for indents of doom to be an issue, I'll start another.

How long does a turn need to be? As long as one LJ comment permits, as short as a single sentence. Only rule is to keep it on Zoe!

Game the Second: Pin the Caption on the Screen Cap

Just what it says. Many, largeish images under the cut. You can post captioned images in the comments (ROFLbot, Motivator, Photobucket and suchlike may aid you in your quest), or you can simply post your caption and tell us what image it's for.

The winner gets… five million pounds. In the Land of Fiction, that is.

Little Brain Child: Zoe appreciation, part the second: Fanworks

Regrettably, stories from Troughton's era can be hard to get a hold of. Even the ones that are intact are harder to come by than New Who and Tom Baker stories (over here in the US, anyway). Or perhaps you've already had ample exposure to Zoe, and you're looking for further reading. Either way, you're getting some links for Zoe fanworks, whether you really want them or not.

Zoe

[info]elliptic_eye

Little Brain Child: Zoe appreciation, part the first

Part One: Character biography and picspam up the wazoo.

Moderate spoilers for Zoe's entire run—I've left out mention of some particularly awesome Zoe moments in the name of omitting major spoilers. And "spoiler" is a misnomer, anyway; I don't think there's any way that a Zoe story could possibly be "spoilt" by anything. Except lack of Zoe.

VERY image-heavy, very dialup-unfriendly. Soz. Next two shouldn't be so bad.

Say! Who is Zoe? )

A handy-dandy list of all Zoe's appearances in the televised series and spinoff material can be found on Wikipedia. But for now, a few highlights:

Wheel in Space )

The INVASION omg )

The Krotons )

Seeds of Death )

War Games )

In conclusion: )

Most images are from Tragical History Tour, with some capped by yours truly and three—2 exploding!TARDIS shots and Zoe inna jar—Googled; I couldn't find them anywhere else. If they're your caps or scans, please just let me know and they'll be credited or pulled according to your pleasure.
