About:
These days, with the internet, cell phones, webcams, satellite communication... as well as good old fashioned letters... reliable, simple communication over long distance is more accessible.... and love at those distances, though seldom looked for, is (perhaps for the first time) really practical.

Practical... but never easy.
Welcome to our place for those in the wrong place.

We are the ones who know best the meaning of 'goodbye';
Who cling fast to trinkets and pillows, when our arms cannot reach;
Whose bodies live in one place, our hearts and minds another.
To whom their scent is precious... and touch priceless.
We wait months for what many experience each day, and want nothing more.
We know what it is to reach out blindly in the night,
to be torn apart,
to dream of beautiful closeness.

And, chances are, if you feel pangs every time you see a couple holding hands, or stay online for hours just waiting for the IM sound... we understand.

Here, anything goes, and 'hopeless romantic' is pretty much part of the job description; here you can whine, cry, and just talk for as long as you want about a loved one far away or any aspect of your experience, whatever brought you together and whatever stands between. You can ask for advice or offer some. In our experience, people who haven't been through it rarely quite understand what it's like... so here's a place to join where everyone is welcome and everyone truly does know how you feel.

Community Rules


  • 1. No discrimination or personal attacks of any kind.

We all come from different regional, religious and ethnic backgrounds and all walks of life. This community is open to gay/lesbian couples, therefore we ask that our members keep an open mind. Acknowledge that others may think differently and be gracious about it when someone else challenges your opinion or the way you expressed it. If you cannot discuss the issue in a calm, rational manner, then do not respond.

  • 2. No offensive generalizations.
    Generalizations or stereotypes based on race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, disability, or weight will not be tolerated.

  • 3. No drama.
    If drama errupts in the comments of a post, keep it in the comments! Any community post made to fuel the drama will be deleted immediately. No warnings.

  • 4. Do not delete people's comments to your post.
    People are always going to disagree with you. If you feel someone's comment is out of line, take it up with a moderator. Moderators cannot see what you delete so appropriate action cannot be taken. Additionally, do not post to the community with comments disabled. This does not foster a community of open dialog.

  • 5. No off-topic posts.
    This is a long distance relationship community so the posts should have some relevance towards long distance relationships. Cross-posting entries from your personal LJ is okay, but only if the main topic is related to your relationship or LDRs. If the entry is off-topic, it's better suited for your personal journal or [info]friends_of_lfa, where nothing is off-topic.

  • 6. No spamming.
    Please do not advertise your products or services here. If you have a community advertisement that is relationship/long distance/online love related and you're a member of the community, then it's acceptable to advertise the community. No rating community advertisements, please.

  • 7. Please do not use offensive icons when posting or commenting in this community.
    If your icon contains profanity or is discriminatory, you may be asked to change your icon when posting in LFA.

  • 8. Please use the default font style, color, and size when posting to the community.
    Because it can be very difficult to read posts that are in tiny font or a color that clashes with someone's LJ layouts, we request that you don't use fancy fonts when posting in LFA.
