Candy Candy Everywhere!! [Dec. 1st, 2009|11:18 am]

oblivious_man
Y'know - with the number of diabetics in the community (myself included) ... wow, there was an AWFUL lot of sugar & candy all over the convention.

Room parties were a diabetic coma just waiting to happen. (*laughing*)

...if we had more self control, we probably wouldn't be diabetic in the first place. :P

On behalf of the Dharma Initiative, also known as Pam - Psychologist and Alex - Technician (who btw is actually named ALEC but due to an embroidery malfunction became Alex for the day), I'd like to thank everyone who attended our party Saturday night. We had a great time hosting it and I hope everyone had fun! Thanks for making our party a huge success.

Namaste.

LosCon 36 [Nov. 30th, 2009|04:03 pm]

oblivious_man
Okay, I definately had fun at this year's LosCon. It's always great to be amongst the Sci-Fi community and "talk shop" ... revel in the geek-factor and just have a great time.

Loved the Dealer-Room, as always (I did manage to spend just slightly past my limit - but I think I got some really good purchases this year)

The costumes... GREAT! I love seeing the array of costumes that people come up with and share with us at the convention. It's always great to see how fun & creative the guests can be.

A few of the bads...

Schedule changes. While the panels I managed to get to were great (for the most part) ... there were several panels which got cancelled at the last minute and the guests just did not seem to be properly informed of this.

I checked in on a panel I wanted to see 20-minutes after its start time and there were still no panelists... the schedules on the boards outside the rooms were not updated and nobody checked in on the panel-room to inform the guests of the schedule change.

I know that y'all can't be everywhere at once and while the newsletter TRIES to keep everyone up to speed ... it doesn't seem to be sufficient.

The public rudeness. Maybe it's just me... but are people just becoming just LESS socially adept and ruder than previous years? I know that there's a lot of shiny flashing things going on & the sci-fi community isn't exactly famous for their social-skills ... but the number of people who would just walk blindly into each other and cut each other off was staggering. (pun intended)

I've learned over the years of going to this event that MANY of the participants are physically broken or not as nimble as the rest of society (the number of participants on crutches, using canes, walkers, wheelchairs & scooters present are the clearest statement of that)

...which means those of us who are more "able-bodied" need to be considerate of them and their needs. Be patient. The panel you wanted to get to is STILL going to be there even if you arrive five-seconds later because you had to slow down to get around someone who wasn't as fast as you.

And Children. ...or more specifically, the lack of discipline in many of these children at the convention.

I expect a few temper tantrums and maybe a crying child or two at ANY event where children are present... but kids who are "running wild" through the hotel, screaming & otherwise spoiling the event for everyone else around them do NOT belong there.

Overall... it was still a lot of fun. I love going & have already purchased my tickets for next year's event. I hope some of these issues can be addressed before next year.

On behalf of Team Lab Rat... [Nov. 30th, 2009|12:46 am]

betnoir
I just want to say a quick thank you on behalf of my PhD candidate friend to everyone who filled out a survey and earned the coveted Lab Rat ribbon. She got way more than what she was hoping for.

She is hoping to have a Thesis Completed (as opposed to this year's Thesis Conmplesis) party next year to share in her success, as well as to present her findings on a panel.

Everybody was so enthusiastic to help with her project, it was just fabulous.

Thanks again, and see you at next LosCon!

Parking? [Nov. 27th, 2009|06:03 pm]

lily_lemony
[mood | curious]

I have a silly question - this is my first LosCon and I'm only going for a few hours tomorrow. Where is the best/cheapest place to park?

I was reading around the website and saw that parking is $19(?!) per day. Is this correct? And if indeed we can get validated, how much would it be then and where would one do that?

Thanks for any information in advance.

Weekend Weather [Nov. 26th, 2009|02:11 pm]

darrelx
It's a gorgeous So. Cal Turkey-day, but don't let that fool you.

A cold front is moving in tonight and tomorrow, and the high temperature will drop 15-20 degrees off of today's temp.

Saturday morning will bring rain... and not just a little bit of rain, it's supposed to really come down. Hopefully it won't last all day, and will be dry again on Sunday... as I'm driving up from San Diego on BabyDragon, my Honda Goldwing motorcycle.

Plan appropriately, and see you at the Con!

Connectors needed to show video on room TV's? [Nov. 26th, 2009|12:02 am]

trinsf
So, what connectors are necessary to stream video from a laptop to one of the hotel room TV's? We're trying to make sure we have the appropriate background pictures for the Fanzine Lounge After Dark (tm).

Her internet access is a tad spotty right now, so she has asked me to pass this along:

"Roundtable on Fan Culture & History: describe what makes us fans Sun 2:30

Here is the time of my roundtable. Could you email your LosCon friends and ask them to come. E-mail is hard from here.

As part of my PhD dissertation, I am researching aspects of fandom as a subculture. Because of your long-time connection to LosCon, I would very much like your input. Additionally, I look forward to seeing you at the Thesis Complesis party. I appreciate any time you can share with me.

Son of Shameless Self Promotion [Nov. 19th, 2009|01:28 am]

dedoc
[mood | amused]

I'm going to be doing something this year that I've never done before... autographs.

The shared-universe SF project I am a member of, Orion's Arm, has just published its first collection of novellas, "Against A Diamond Sky". As one of the organizers of the novella contest, and editor of the group's fiction quarterly ezine, Voices/Future Tense, I had the honor of writing the introduction to the anthology.

I will be talking about this project in panels, and have been given a time slot for autographs. I'll have a limited number of copies available for purchase at the table. If you're interested, but don't want to risk my running out (hah! yeah, right...), you might want to order copies from some of the usual suspects:

www.amazon.com/Against-Diamond-Sky-Tales-Orions/dp/1432740997/ref=sr_1_1

or

search.barnesandnoble.com/Against-A-Diamond-Sky/The-Orions-Arm-Universe-Project/e/9781432740993/

You can learn (lots!) more about Orion's Arm here: http://www.orionsarm.com

and the ezine is at http://voicesoa.net

See you all soon!

. on Saturday, November 28, 2009.  The Blood Drive runs from 10:30 A.M. to 5:30 P.M. After our mission through your veins, you will be treated to juice, homemade miniaturized muffins, cookies and other small tokens of our appreciation.

We will also have a
raffle for all Blood Drive members.   Prizes will include two free memberships to next year's Loscon.   Come early, and don't let any BEM's in the
