New Years' Eve for the 18+ crowd?

  • Dec. 20th, 2009 at 11:43 AM
Hi there,

Does anyone know of any New Years' events for the 18 and over crowd? My friends and I are mostly 19 and 20 so we can't go to most of the events we've been able to find. Does anyone know of anything we could do? Thanks!

So what is Pasadena like on Jan 2? Does it clear out enough to be able to actually go near it?

Does anyone know where I could find flea markets or swap meets or similar things tomorrow afternoon (Sunday), preferably around the Westchester area?

Harlow Gold takes you back to a time when life was simpler, drinks were cheaper! This sassy throwback to old vaudeville is done with innovative flair. Beautifully choreographed, five fabulous femme fatales take to the stage to entertain and delight folks with this sexy and witty show. Boasting dancers from 40 Deuce, The Pussycat Dolls, Dreamgirls and Bette Midler’s “The Showgirl Must Go On”, these dames are the crème de la crème. Nothing is more tantalizing than spending an evening with these shining stars of L.A.’s underground Burlesque world. All that glitters is… Harlow Gold!

I'm wondering if anyone familiar with the rental market in LA can tell me if these listings are scams? Or if there's some catch. They seem far too good to be true to me (I'm an NYC transplant).

Thanks in advance.

Anyone know what went down at Sunset and Curson about 11 p.m.? Six to eight fire trucks plus many police... they closed off the street... two firefighters went up a ladder to the roof of an apartment building on Curson just south of Sunset but they didn't evacuate the tenants and everything cleared out after about 20 minutes.

Bizarre Christmas Questions

  • Dec. 16th, 2009 at 2:49 PM
Hello all! I come bearing Yuletide confusion.

1. I bought a Thomas train that is battery powered from the Whistle Stop in Pasadena, and as things often go, it's not working. Is there anywhere closer to Central Los Angeles than there that could fix the train?

2. I need a miniature Christmas tree, but don't know where to look. By miniature I mean only around seven inches tall, almost like one for a doll's house. Either made to look real, or ceramic, or electric is okay. I just need one that's small.

Thank you!!

Recommendations for good places to have dinner near LAX? I'm picking up a friend from the airport around the Traffic Hour of Doom and would rather eat nearby than make the slog back to my place. I'm checking around on Googlemaps and Yelp but am just finding places that sound cool but have a lot of bad reviews. Preferred price no more than $15 a person, any type of food is ok. Any ideas would be appreciated. :)

Fighting a parking ticket

  • Dec. 14th, 2009 at 9:38 PM
Last week I received a parking ticket for parking in a permit-only street... despite having my permit clearly hanging on my rear view mirror as it has been for the past four months. I called to contest and they said they would send me a letter.

Well, I received a letter today and it says saying that my "statement of facts" (yes, it's quoted in the letter as well) was insufficient. Read: "We screwed you over. We know we screwed you over. But we're the government so go on and bend over."

I want to request a hearing. $55 isn't that much (well, actually it is for a starving post grad like myself), but I actually value principle and justice unlike most of our government establishments.

Any advice on handling the matter?

So, tonight should be a good night. Not so many sick people,

Volunteering for Animal-related Work?

  • Dec. 14th, 2009 at 3:15 PM
Any suggestions for animal-related volunteer work for someone inexperienced but willing to learn? Although I am interested in helping out humane societies, I'm hoping for a range of animal sizes, not just pets - are there any animal sanctuaries or zoos that take in and train volunteers? I'm not expecting to be able to do much with without a degree and years of experience, but surely there's something I can do - paperwork, groundskeeping, etc?

I'm open to other suggestions for humanitarian work as well, particularly anything to do with improving literacy (or something like 826LA) or the environment, so long as it doesn't entail walking the the streets and asking pedestrians for signatures and credit card info. (Which I've tried before, and it's just not my thing.) Any sites that has this all listed?

I have a car and lots of (unemployed, sigh) free time, so I'm pretty open to ideas. Anyone with personal experiences to relate about groups they've volunteered with?
