Wardrobe help

  • Jul. 15th, 2009 at 6:18 PM
Hey everyone,

So, I've reached that time in my life where I think it's finally appropriate to revamp my image. Today's earlier post about LA fashion has inspired me to seek help from you wonderful LJers, as my situation is pretty dire. I'm 27 and dying to get some new clothes, yet fashion and I have always been at odds. I still wear some t-shirts I had in high school. I've been wearing the same necklace and belt for 10 years! Yeah. I've never had female friends of the sort who could help out with this, either. My roomies now are all around 21 years old, so they tend not to understand why I'm just not picking up what they're putting down in the clothes world, if you know what I mean. Soooo...

(And just FYI, I feel incredibly dorky for posting this.) Would anyone want to be my shopping buddy/guide? I suck at buying women's clothes. I suck at coordinating. I suck at playing up my assets, if you know what I mean. I pretty much wear men's tank tops and board shorts in the summer, and I just started wearing women's jeans sometimes. Argh. I do well at dressing up super fancy, but casualwear and going out-wear just totally escapes me. If anyone is interested in helping me with my FashionCrisis(tm), please let me know! I'm just not good at looking like a late-20s girl, and I'd like to improve. I'm more than willing to purchase a few items of clothes for someone who lends me a hand (and a critical, but nice eye). I also do photography, proofreading/editing, and a host of other random things that you may want/need help with in return for giving me your fashion assistance! Thanks for reading, and I hope that those of you who are utterly uninterested at least got a good chuckle.

Fashion basics?

  • Jul. 15th, 2009 at 6:22 PM
You guys have been really generous with advice regarding the logisitics of our move to your region: cost, home hunting, jobs and more. Now I have a fun question for you:
What are the fashion staples of an L.A. girl's wardrobe?
Moving from NE Ohio, and Pittsburgh before that, I love my home, but don't want to look like a midwesterner! What are clothing, hair and make-up no-no's that scream "transplant?" What are cool, functional pieces, cosmetic trends (not of the surgical kind, lol), and hair styles that are a big deal in your area right now?

B-Boys at Venice Beach?

  • Jul. 15th, 2009 at 4:20 PM
This is a long shot, buuut...

I caught the last 10-15 minutes of a demonstration at Venice Beach yesterday, I think it may have been a b-boy group. The performance was obviously scripted and very funny. As the finale one of the guys did a running flip over a line of people. Does anyone know what I'm talking about, and do they have a name and/or website?

MTV True Life CASTING

  • Jul. 15th, 2009 at 10:36 AM
Right now we are casting for an upcoming episode of True Life. The main focus of the episode is young people at odds with their parents over their boyfriend or girlfriend.

I would really appreciate if you could forward the information along in the group. A lot of times when we post people think we are spam. Parents must be willing to participate in the show. They can email their situations to Parents@mtvnmix.com with their name, age, location, and phone number. We are looking for people 18-26

I'm pretty excited that this is finally happening. Now, every time you buy an mp3 of my song, "Hetero-Strike," on amazon.com or itunes, half of the proceeds will go to the National Center for Lesbian Rights. The NCLR is one of the leading organizations in the fight against Propostion 8 and they need money to pay lawyers. Lots of lawyers. So let's give them some money, eh?

Of course, if you want to preview the song, you can always check it out at my website:

or check out the classic video that has been seen all over the net, but mostly by Prop 8 supporting bigots who leave nasty comments. :/

Is there any "inspiration point" kind of place that's accessible to the public in the Hollywood/Hollywood Hills/Studio City area?

I'm not looking for a place to bone down, but rather a place with a good view where I can sit with my girl.

Thanks :)

From Andrew:
Well, I don't know about you guys, but for some friends, this weekend has been
one hell of a roller coaster ride. It's been a massive case of very high peaks
coming down to very low valleys, and back again. Boy are my arms tired.

Sometimes, desperate times call for ridiculous measures.
The show must go on, and we'll be open for business tonight,
providing you with weapons-grade ridiculousnesses.
And things. And stuff. Join us, won't you?

Tonight's special guest cook will be Nui Cobalt! I don't know
exactly what she's bringing to the mess hall, but I have no
doubt it will be holistically delicious. :-)

See you then!
Who? What? When? Where? How much? )

Outdoor pools

This may be the naive plea of an East Coaster. But is there anywhere in the city that has outdoor, public pools? The kind where you can pay your entrance fee and then swim laps?

Stolen stuff, please help this artist

This is for someone who desperately needs help finding their stolen stuff. There's plenty of personal electronics and personal items that were robbed (at gunpoint, and from a tattoo parlor), but most importantly, this dude's art portfolio and thesis (a life's work) has gone missing too, with some of these images:

Acclaimed late-night theatre series returns

  • Jul. 11th, 2009 at 10:15 PM

TU explores the exposure of our weaknesses and failures as well as our strengths and successes with the third chapter of its Tales of an Unsettled City… Revelations.

LOS ANGELES – Theatre Unleashed is excited to announce the third chapter of its widely popular and critically acclaimed late night series. Tales of an Unsettled City: Revelations returns under new direction at 10:15 p.m. Saturday nights from Aug. 7-30 at The Sherry Theatre in North Hollywood.

Tales of an Unsettled City: RevelationsA collection of short vignettes, Tales of an Unsettled City: Revelations examines our awareness of who we really are, who we have been and who we will become and those life-changing moments that happen before or after that awakening occurs. This series of short vignettes explores the dramatic, the comedic and everything in between helping us remember those experiences in which we truly opened our eyes.

“Sometimes the hardest thing to do in life is to open up to others and to the world in general because the idea of exposing one’s self can be simply terrifying,” said Director Matt Ryan. “The reality though is that a person’s dreams can only be attained if that person risks traveling into the unknown. This show celebrates that personal journey and the revelations we make along the way.”

Revelations is the third of four planned Tales of an Unsettled City editions that will take place after each Theatre Unleashed Main Stage show during the 2009 season. The first show was called Beginnings, followed by Encounters. The current incarnation follows Saturday night performances of the Theatre Unleashed Rep show Contemporary Constructions.

Tales of an Unsettled City: Revelations“This concept started simply as ‘grab bag’ theatre, a collection of random pieces that we would put up late night, but then we decided we wanted each piece to fit a specific theme and somehow connect them as one whole show,” said creator Carlos Martinez. “I thought it had potential to be an ongoing series where audiences could follow a journey into the tales of people and their experiences in new and unique surroundings from their arrival all the way through to their departure, physically or otherwise.”

Revelations features all original pieces, including some from Theatre Unleashed company members. Tales of an Unsettled City is the third original series the company has launched in 2009. At the beginning of February, Theatre Unleashed launched its own sketch comedy troupe Die Grüppe and later that month the company introduced the Galleries Series, which just finished a sold-out run of the original performance art show Metamorphose. The company is also coming off a successful run of the TU original Tracing Sonny.

Question About the Fashion District

  • Jul. 11th, 2009 at 7:32 PM
I need to buy a bunch of fabric for various projects, and it seems like the fashion district downtown is the obvious place to go.

I'd like to get down there tomorrow, but I can't find any posted hours.

Is the fashion district open on Sundays?

The ambitious company takes another bold step in just its second year, with Sarah Kane’s “4.48 Psychosis” and David Ives’ “All in the Timing” running side by side.

LOS ANGELES – Theatre Unleashed is excited to present Contemporary Constructions, its third and fourth Main Stage shows of the season, running in rep from Aug. 7-30 at The Sherry Theatre in North Hollywood. A celebration of two very distinct modern day playwright geniuses, Contemporary Constructions will feature Sarah Kane’s final poetic plunge into the depths of depression, 4.48 Psychosis, as well as David Ives’ comedy of the absurd, All in the Timing.

4.48 Psychosis, by Sarah Kane“Doing shows in rep has been a goal of ours because it gives us a chance to stretch and expand upon the ‘rules’ of theatre,” said Artistic Director Phillip Kelly. “With these two polar opposite shows, we’ve allowed ourselves to give our own inspired touch to recognizable pieces whose only similarity is that they were written by playwrights with a true gift for words…words that speak volumes.”

Kelly will direct 4.48 Psychosis, a show that confronts clinical depression straight on by allowing the audience to see inside the mind of a depressive in the hours before her suicide. This brutally honest show also explores the many factors that lead to that decision. As she approaches 4:48 a.m., the time of night in which depressives supposedly see the clearest, her imagination begins to meld with her reality, driving her closer and closer to the edge. To enhance the breaking of the main character’s psyche, the show will also feature the use of dance, live cello music, strategically placed mirrors and multimedia projection.

“I wanted to take a cue from Kane’s notion that beautiful art can be derived from even the darkest of subject matters,” Kelly said. “The idea is to use these different tools and art forms to help create the haunting and emotionally jarring effect of the slowly crumbling minds of the two female protagonists as they inch closer to the meaning of their mortality.”

All in the Timing, by David IvesThe second part of Contemporary Constructions will be the Ives’ classic comedic collection of one-acts, All in the Timing, directed by Carlos Martinez. Bizarre humor at its best, Martinez is sticking to the original lineup that made up the earliest rendition of the show, including: Sure Thing, The Universal Language, Philip Glass Buys a Loaf of Bread, The Philadelphia, Variations on the Death of Trotsky and Words, Words, Words. Though each vignette is capable of standing on its own, Martinez is looking to take the show a step further, melding the pieces together with the use of creative lighting, sound and movement.

“The idea is to take the audience through an abstract journey into the craziness and outlandish relationships that make up the show,” Martinez said. “It’s such a funny show that get s funnier with each reading and each viewing and of course, that honest comedy is what we’re focusing on. But we also hope to grab people by more than just their funny bone.”

Theatre Unleashed is also excited to announce Tales of an Unsettled City: Revelations, the third installment in its late night theatre series, running Saturdays at 10:15 p.m. after presentations of Contemporary Constructions. Theatre Unleashed is coming off a string of sellout shows for the original full-length Tracing Sonny and the recent installment of the Galleries Series, Metamorphose.
