So, as some of you may remember, I chopped almost 12 inches of my hair off in December, making it about jawbone length. I've been growing it out since. I will admit that during the first few months, as I was getting used to the very new cut, I styled my hair a lot.... lots of blow drying and straightening. But my hair seemed to do fine with it, for the most post. I got the ends trimmed about a month ago, as well. It's currently at my shoulders.
I haven't really styled my hair much in the last two months. It's been warm here since about mid April, and as such, I didn't have a need to blow dry my hair before leaving to go to class or go out. I do still shampoo and condition every day (or sometimes every other), but I've always done that and sadly, will probably always do that (I've tried detoxing before when I was younger... and two months later, with trying to wash twice a week, my hair was still disgustingly greasy by day two).
Despite the minimized styling in the last two to three months, I've noticed that the top layer of my hair has... changed. It's not the length that's showing this (as in, my ends are pretty good), but the four or five inches of hair closest to my scalp. The hair, first off, is curly.... and wiry. I can't tell if it's just my hair growing in curly (my hair tends to change texture and style sometimes... while my hair is mostly medium to fine, I have random coarse bits throughout it... remnants of when my hair was curly as a teen), or if it's damaged and is therefore coarse. Some of the pieces I don't doubt are-- they're indented and just feel brittle. But they're wispy, curly, short pieces of hair littering my part and down. Some of them are thin and some of thicker. In the light, it looks like frizz galore... and when the humidity hits, I'm betting it's gonna be even worse.
My brain's telling me that it's damage, but I just don't see how it could be. Even when I blowdry and straighten, I do it to the length, not the top. I haven't even styled in a few months, and I never noticed this when I was doing so in the winter months. So, basically... I have no clue what caused this. I don't know if they're all just signs of damage or something else... any ideas?
And since I don't have a picture to show that represents the damage at the moment, I'll post one from this past Saturday, just to give you an idea of the length. ;)
EDIT: I got a good picture of it after I showered.... all of the little, curly pieces were already dry, and therefore very noticeable...
Thanks for your help!
