I'm contemplating the trim back up to classic that I know I need, and I'd rather go there since I know they're friendly toward long hair and will cut as little as possible.

| Hi everyone |
[14 Jul 2009|12:43pm] |
Here are a couple of pics of my hair. The quality isn't that good because I had to take the pics in the mirror:
Anyway, my hair is REALLY oily at the scalp, and the ends are really really dry. I have tried leave in conditioners, but they don't seem to moisturize that well. I think someone here mentioned that they use olive oil on their ends. So my questions are:
1) What do you use to condition your ends?
2) If you use oil, what type? Olive, jojoba, or something else?
3) When you put the oil on your ends, do you leave it there and not rinse it out? Or do you leave it on for a while, and then shampoo it?
4) I heard hair masks are VERY bad for the hair. Is this true?
Thank you!

I used to have hair that reached my waist. I made of the mistake of having an inexperienced hair colorist bleaching it then dying it red. After that, I had to hack off 8 inches.
I've been slowly growing it back and weaving my natural hair color back in. However, how bad is it that my hairdresser razored the front layers and back of my hair to thin it out?

Satin Rollers: So I've been researching ways to style my hair without heat or damage and I came across satin hair rollers that you put in at night :O All you do is put your hair in the rollers, the size of the roller determines how tight or loose you want the curl....then you sleep with them ON a satin pillow case!
I'm going to give it a try and see how it goes.....of course this is something I'm experimenting for us tight wave/curly haired girls. In a few articles it says that it is a way to "set" your hair and since you are using satin to define... there is little to no frizz. (well unless you move around like CRAZY in the night). So basically by putting our hair in the rollers we are munipulating the way in which our hair curls :D it sounds super exciting.
If anyone has had ANY experience with satin rollers and has tight wavy/curly hair please do share your experience!
Weather: Why is it that on hot, dry and even windy days make my hair a LIVING hell? It seems like my hair is always so pretty when it's moist and cool...does anyone know exactly WHY my hair does this? I'm hoping to move to Tokyo in the future (if I can convince my fiance) and I'm hoping the weather will be something that won't screw up my hair like hot Nevada.....D: eek even when I visit San Diego in the summer my hair goes nuts
Hair Bun: Is it damaging to put your hair in a loose bun with something like this (AKA loose cloth head band):

| Some tl;dr about curling hair |
[13 Jul 2009|12:08pm] |
[Up front: sorry about the lack of pics, as I'm at work (shh!) and can't get any uploaded right now. Maybe I'll add some later tonight if it still looks in any way acceptable.]
Particularly for the folk with extremely fine, thin, straight hair: how do you keep the frizz down and curls intact when you go curly? I have the type of hair that just plain does not have the mass to hold any kind of curl without a lot of help, and only holds a curl as half-heartedly as possible even WITH a lot of help (and "help" very much includes no touching whatsoever, because touching only leads directly to jail without passing go or collecting $200). Behold the timeline on this go-around, which constitutes part eleventy freaking billion in our ongoing series entitled "Carolyn vs. curly hair: totally unwinnable battles she will not leave alone for some stupid reason":
( More whining behind the cut, for easy skipping )
Anyone out there with a similar hair type have some miraculous product/voodoo spell/illegal surgical scalp transplant procedure that has worked for them? Tips are much appreciated. =)

Thank you to everyone who offered advice in my last post (how to help my hair grow).
I have another question!
To get healthy hair...I've heard about using olive, cocoa and jojba oils. My question is this: Do you put it in your hair and then wash it out? Or, how does this work?
I have extremely dry hair. A lady a few months back used bleach on top of bleach and ruined my hair. That's also why it's so short and I've been growing it out!
I've been eating fruit here and there, and drinking water like crazy. I've also bought every deep conditioning treatment Sally's Beauty Supply carries.
I use the new David Babaii for Wildaid hydrating system (shampoo & conditioner).
I have long haired bob. Chin length in the front, shorter in the back. Natural course, thick curly hair, so I'm constantly using my heat protectant spray, blowdryer (Silver Bird)and straightener (Hot & Silky). I also use style tools such as BioSilk and Super Skinny by Paul Mitchell.
Looking for something natural to help my hair.
EDIT: I don't plan on growing it out past my shoulders!
Thanks =)

| Coconut Oil |
[13 Jul 2009|12:36am] |
I apologize now if I missed this when I looked through the memories. I looked there and the FAQ and didn't see anything that answered my question, but that doesn't mean it's not there.
I went and bought coconut oil today because I keep hearing about it everywhere. Now my question is, how do you use it? What's the best way? I've seen everything from leave it in for 15 minutes then shampoo out to use it on dry hair and leave it on overnight. Then some places say mix it with water and others don't say that. So really, how do I go about using it? Do I use only a little and just finger comb it through my hair or get a decent amount in my hair and how long and so on?

| Progress Pics |
[12 Jul 2009|06:45pm] |
Hello everyone!
I decided to start growing my hair out around the end of 2008/beginning of 2009. So I have a few progress pics I'd like to share. :)
Haha, I just realized I haven't really taken any progress pics since January, which was when I last dyed/trimmed my hair. So the two pictures under the cut show a difference of 7 months. :O

| Making an Entrance |
[11 Jul 2009|07:23pm] |
So I thought I would introduce myself. I have heard Torrinpaige talk about this community. Thought I would check it out.
Hmmm...I have been growing my hair for over 5 years and it currently stands at *almost* the bottom of my bum. It is 39 and a half inches long. I have had two 2 inch trims with in that time. I have decided to not cut until I reach my goal of classic. For those of you at LHC, I am fae.
Unbelievable as it may be, I have other interests than hair. Shock right? I know. I love to read and generally don't watch tv because I read instead.
Music is basically my life. I sing and I do it a lot. I know for a fact that I drive my neighbors crazy. I don't care though because that definitely goes both way.
I love animals and have a morbid fascination with horses.
I apparently can't type tonight. So i'm going to leave it at that and come back later.
Aloha.

| Dove's Advanced Therapy Shampoo/Conditioner |
[12 Jul 2009|10:10pm] |
|
Hey all, I usually don't recommend hair products, but just recently I tried out Dove's Advanced Therapy Hair and Conditioner, and after just two uses, I've noticed a world of difference on my hair! It's 1000 times shinier, sleeker, and looks a LOT healthier.
I also noticed that the conditioner has an important ingredient--silicone. I heard silicone is really good for the hair.
I have medium/coarse hair, so don't know if it would work for other hair types but I definitely say, "Give it a try." It only costs about $5 per bottle.

| Caring for freshly dyed hair |
[11 Jul 2009|08:36am] |
Night before last, I committed a sin. I dyed my mermaid length (elbow length) fine, thin, oily, healthy hair black using commercial hair dye. This was quite a departure for me because I'm quite the healthy-hair nerd--but hey, I got dumped, so I changed my hair.
After my new-start, I-need-closure, this-will-show-him, I-WILL-get-over-him hair-dying, I woke up with dry, staticky, fragile hair (nice color, though!) and started perusing the Internet for healthy-hair care for dyed long hair. Among my Internet sources I checked this community's faq and memories, but I didn't find the answer to the question I have.
I'm already good for the basics--keep it moisturized, treat it gently, watch my nutrition and stress, avoid chlorine--but I'm certain that you clever people know more than I do. What I'm hoping for are your thoughts and notions on caring for recently compromised hair. Now that the mistake has been made, how can I coax my hair back to strong, supple resilience?

Are there any vitamins or anything you can do to HELP hair grow faster?
I had a short bob, and it's taking forever to grow out. I'm at the in-between stage and just want to CHOP it all off! It's driving me absolutely crazy! I've heard prenatal vitamins help your hair, but I've also heard they can mess up your system, cause you to gain weight...etc.
I don't want either of that!!
Thanks for your help =)

I heard some sad advice today, which was that it you want to grow hair long, you MUST cut it all off first, all the bits that have ever been dyed or chemically treated. Could this really be true? Did any of you out there start with dyed hair and then grow it to excellent lengths? I don't want to cut off all my hair!!!! It's already waist length, even though I've dyed it about nine times.
I would love to hear a success story about damaged hair turning long and beautiful after lots of love and patience!
The article which gave this advice also said that you MUST get trims every two months, or else your hair will revolt, and this can't be true! The woman at biracialhair.com hasn't cut her hair for ten years (apparently) and it looks so good! What is the longest you have gone without getting a trim, and how were the results?
*EDIT*
Thank you all for your support, ideas and stories!!!
PS. The article where this faulty information comes from is on a site selling hair sticks. It wasn't a salon owner, but someone whose customers are probably all long hairs, themselves. It can be found at longlocks.com

So, I have a few questions!
1) What are some good vitamins, past normal multi-vitamins, for keeping hair healthy?
2) What are some treatments I can use to moisturize it? Like, natural stuff.
3) What are the best, store brand (Walmart, Target, etc) hair shampoos?
I have extremely thick, brown hair with curls into lose curls. There is minimum fizz, and normally only when it is not completely dry. I don't do anything with it, past put it in pony tails and braid it. I don't even brush it.
Thanks!

| Hair Friends! |
[09 Jul 2009|07:15pm] |
I was debating the merits of cranberry soda versus cherry soda when a woman approaches me.
"do you live around here?" (she's too old to be hitting on me without this being especially awkward, she doesn't look like anyone in my collective, she's speaking english, which crosses out a whole segment of my social sector. who is this woman?) "yups!" "How do you do your hair? The water here is dreadful. You must know, you keep it so long."
We then spent the next fifteen minutes discussing clarifying treatments, apple cider vinegar, and what to do about our terrible hard, mineral-y water here before parting ways.
Has you hair made you any friends or enemies?

This is probably kind of a backwards question to ask here, but I thought it was worth a shot! You ladies (and mens) are the hair experts!
Well, after 3+ years of people telling him to cut his hair, my husband finally caved in and cut all 16 inches (~41 cm) of his beautiful hair off! (It makes me, someone his is growing her hair out, feel sad that his envied, wavy, golden brown locks are no more, but happy because now my hair feels longer! :P)
Anyway, do you guys know of any reliable place (online or otherwise) that will BUY hair?

| Swim caps |

Okay, so.
I LOVE to swim. I wanted to be a mermaid when I was a little girl. :D
But, I worry about chlorine damage.
Here's my problem.
My hair is almost long enough for me to sit on, and given that I'm 5'9" (175 cm) tall, that's a lot. It is fine (as in the individual strands are thin) but thick (as in there's a metric crapton of it).
I also have a freaking huge skull. :) (I'm not kidding. I'm just not a small person, and that extends to my head size.)
I would like to get a swim cap to protect my hair as much as I can, but I'm a little concerned about ordering one online because if I bought one and put it on my head and it didn't fit (because of the combined size of my skull and amount of my hair), I don't think I could return it.
Does anybody know of a good swim cap for long hair and a big head? I would mostly be doing aqua aerobics and recreational swimming, not joining a competitive swim team or anything like that. Not hideously expensive would be nice, but I'd rather spend a little more money on a cap I can actually use than waste money on a cap that doesn't fit my monster noggin. :P

So I've just switch from using Biolage (booo) to Giovanni (yay). So far I can tell a HUGE difference in my hair from getting away from all -cone in my conditioner and SLS in my shampoo, I'm proud to say I hardly have any frizz now. I just had a few questions though....
Although Giovanni is a GREAT organic brand..... is here still harm ingredients in the products? Below are the ingredients to the products in which I use, so it would be SUPER helpful if anyone can point out any bad ingredients that I need to avoid.
