Hey all

I've just joined tonight .. although it seems a quiet community it's also one that I think is a good trip down memory lane :)

I'm 30 years old from the UK (North Yorkshire for the brits on here), and my era is definately the late 80's/early 90's.

I really miss bands like some of the cheese that was about in those days .. Betty Boo, Big Fun ... and also Let Loose and Extreme (although I am trying to keep in touch with their solo projects).

I'll openly admit that my love for Chesney has never left me, and am so grateful that he's still gigging today :) It's like my youth all over again I can tell you.

Anyways, thought I'd say hey :)

Faye x

Wanted: '90s alternative radio broadcasts

So here’s the deal: In the ’90s, I devoured alternative rock radio, listening to as much of it as I could. Nowadays, you may hear some of the songs on the radio still, the big hits by Nine Inch Nails or Nirvana or Smashing Pumpkins, but it’s harder to hear the rarities by the Posies, Matthew Sweet or Candlebox or one of a billion other old bands I’ve probably forgotten about (remember the Soup Dragons?)

I figure, the only way for me to hear these songs again is if I can find original tapes of ’90s alternative/modern rock radio broadcasts (or mp3 files of these broadcasts.) Does any body have any leads or know where I can find some?

Thanks!

Evan

hey everyone

this is a very vague request but my friend and i are desperados. we found a mix tape at goodwill and one of the songs is an instrumental piece that at the beginning has sounds like an astronaut and the words "while bullets were literally kicking around them" said in what sounds like a BBC broadcast. the music is heavy in violins but is definitely ambient.

i know, i know

but any helps is appreciated especially if you know any bands that specialized in instrumental music in the 90s; the closest thing i can compare it to is like mogwai or clann zu... thanks!

every time i hear this new song by the new jack white group "Recounters" or whatever - the opening sounds just like the opening to a much older song. HOWEVER i can't remember what the older song is! I think it's by Elvis Costello??! (aside from the intro, the only lyrics i remember are "look over there! where? there!" - isn't that sad??!) All I know is that I would like to find out because it's driving me batty.

Anyone know what i'm talking about?!

Who sings this song?

It's mid 90s, maybe 96. There's just bass under the verses. I'm not sure, but the words go something to the effect of: "sittin' around the house. Searching for signs of life, but nobody's home." Then the chorus which consists of mostly unintelligble words like, "an I say whahaaa can this girrrr oohwhahahbaby ah oh, can this giirrirrirrrr oowahooaaawhooaaaaa." Yeah, ya know. So thanks, cuz I know someone can tell me.

I miss this band so much. They are one of the most underrated bands of mid to late 90's. I don't even know if they really got much mainstream attention. All I can say is that Shiner were way ahead of their time. The vocalist has a new band called A Day In The Life. The EP was okay. I'm looking forward to the LP that will be out later this year.

there is a running joke with some friends and i about Deadeye Dick (remember them? New Age Girl?) i've always hated 'new age girl', and my friends had never heard the song. they were so interested in it because of my hatred for the song, they purchased an import of the single online. they love it. so i was thinking of other one-hit bands that i absolutely hated. Dishwalla was the next to come to mind (counting blue cars... i think that was their hit). so yesterday i was thinking about how terrible they were, and was reminded even of the song by AC 'You went to see Dishwalla and Everclear (you're gay)'... i was thinking of how glad i was they weren't around and was wondering what Kinko's the members of the band were currently working at.

THEN... last night i went to Borders and noticed that DISHWALLA HAS A NEW ALBUM OUT! its selftitled and it came out this week. well now i'm curious. who keeps buying Dishwalla records and keeping them in business? i've only heard one song of theirs, so maybe i'm missing something great. maybe i should check out more of their stuff. i'm becoming my friends with their Deadeye Dick obsession!

just thought i'd share.

A few more forgottens...

So I just stumbled across this nifty community and figured I'd toss up a list of some other bands and their one-hit songs that I didn't see on the interests list. Hopefully some of you will enjoy and maybe even remember them:

Cowboy Mouth - "Jenny Says"
Flight 16 - "If All the World Hated Me"
Temple of the Dog - "Hunger Strike" and "Say Hello to Heaven"
Tidewater Grain - "Here on the Outside" and "American Star"
Radish - "Little Pink Stars"
Outhouse - "Welcome"
Caramel - (Can't Remember What Song of Theirs was on the Radio)
Nada Surf - "Popular"
Lit - "My Own Worst Enemy"
Gravity Kills - "Guilty"
At the Drive-In - "One Armed Scissor"
Marcy Playground - "Sex and Candy"
Guano Apes - "Open Your Eyes"
The Flys - "Got You Where I Want You"
Feeder - "High"
Days of the New - "Touch, Peel and Stand" and "The Shelf in the Room"
Cracker - "Low"
Butthole Surfers - "Pepper"
Butt Trumpets - "You're Ugly"

So there they be. I know some of them are still around and some of them may be a bit more notable than others. For instance At the Drive-In split into two bands that are pretty popular (Sparta and The Mars Volta), Temple of the Dog was made up of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden members, etc. But hopefully some of you find the list useful in some way. I know I like a lot of those songs and a lot of those bands have tons of great songs that are as good or even better than the radio hits (Like At the Drive-In and Marcy Playground).

Anyways, I think this community is a great idea and it's cool to see other people mentioning bands that practically no one I meet has ever heard of. Take care, all. Ciao.

band inquiry...

Ok.. I need some help remembering a band. I heard the last 5 seconds of a song I haven't heard since the early/mid-nineties and I really REALLY like the song. I was pleased to hear it, but like the typical dj he was, he didn't even mention the band name. I tried the website and it wasn't listed there either. poo.

I tried searching through iTunes musicstore too, just in case I could catch it in the lists, but I don't know the title of the song either!

I *do* remember the rythym (which I can't reproduce here) and what I believe are some of the lyrics. I've never actually known the lyrics so if I'm wrong/off, then you know why. *gulp* Here goes nothing..

"i'm the one that you want..(?)" then later in the song, and the end "so i might as well crash" ? i think.

It's got a dark sound to it and the vocals are fuzzy under the music. I remember hearing this very popular song a LOT when it was regularly played.

Even your best guess is much appreciated. Thanks so much!

The Rewards of Cruelty

I'm from Boston and one of my favorite local bands from the early to mid 90s was Orangutang. They put out one EP (The Rewards of Cruelty) and one album (Dead Sailor Acid Blues). They broke up and the lead singer went on to form Trona, which release two albums. That was probably mid to late 90s. I haven't heard anything about any band members since and was wondering if anyone remembered them or knew what they were doing now.

Oh man, I miss Imperial Drag *so* badly. I think they only got one album out before vanishing. The only songs o' theirs I ever heard on the radio were 'Spider' and 'Boy or a Girl'.

Nice idea for a community, by the by!
You are godly for knowing bands like Spacehog, Self, and Local H. :*
