Some Secret Place: Exploring Pagan Spirituality & Ritual
Peter Mahoney and Friends
14th July (Monday) 7.15 pm for 7.30 start
£5 (please book in advance)

These are monthly beginner's pagan ritual evenings, perfect for those starting out on the pagan path, or as solitary witches. Some Secret Place is made up of some talk, some small group discussion on devotion, ceremony, spirituality, and relationship with deity. Most of all, though, it is experiential. It's about doing and feeling rather than theorising. We hope that people who come along will deepen their personal relationship with the pagan gods. This is for people who have done some reading on witchcraft, Wicca and/or paganism, and who are familiar with at least its general theological tenets. We assume you are pagan and want to practice it, but we don't presume you are experienced.

Group size is small - we don't take more than 17 people for the evening. The organisers want this to be a gentle, intimate and thoughtful experience. You can come once, come regularly, or come intermittently -- whatever suits you best.

Treadwell's Solitary Witchcraft Course: First Night: The Magical Book / the “Book of Shadows
Christina Oakley and Friends
16th July (Wednesday) 7.15 for 7.30 start, runs till 9.30 pm
£10 (please book in advance)

This is a short course of four fortnightly evenings in which beginning solitary witches can work practically on some of cunning folks arts. Tuition, guidance, encouragement and hand-on practice form the heart of every session. The tutors are all experienced and will be leading in turn the subject of their various specialities. The group size is kept deliberately small (maximum 18) so everyone can have plenty of attention.

First Session
Every witch has a Big Black Book, in which secrets, spells, recipes and other unknown things are written. Most solitary witches today have a few blank books they mean to turn into the Magical Booke of Arte, but find the prospect a little daunting. This session opens up the world of inspiration, secrets, mysteries, spell and what is the function of such a book. As a solitary, how do you decide how to make one / should you make one? What goes into it, and how do you get started? The activities of the evening will include showing round a selection of actual solitary witches’ books. We will look at the ways of illustrating them, the importance of handwriting, and what you might want to choose to start with, to put into your own one. To this end there will be the presentation of a few invocations and devotional pieces from the books of some of the witches present. Small group discussion and making an action plan on how to start your own book over the following fortnight.

Tutors: Peter Mahoney of ‘Some Secret Place’ ; Rebecca Wood of Hedgewitches’ Kitchen; Rebecca Beattie of Hedgewitches’ Kitchen; Marysia Kay, actress and witch; Christina Oakley Harrington of Treadwell’s.

Join the Vampyre Connexion at Nunhead Cemetery Open Day
  darckense

07:16am 13/05/2008
Greetings dear childrens of the night.
Join the Vampyre Connexion on Saturday 17th of May for the Nunhead
cemetery open day.

We will meet outside the gate at 11 am for a great goth walk.

Nunhead Cemetery is perhaps the least known, but most attractive, of
the great Victorian Cemeteries of London. Consecrated in 1840, it is
one of the seven great Victorian cemeteries established in a ring
around the outskirts of London. It contains examples of the
magnificent monuments erected in memory of the most eminent citizens
of the day, which contrast sharply with the small, simple headstones
marking common, or public, burials. It's formal avenue of towering
limes and the Gothic gloom of the original Victorian planting gives
way to paths which recall the country lanes of a bygone era.

Nunhead cemetery is on 33 Chalsey Road

SE4 1YN

London

You can easily reach us via train from Victoria and getting off at
Nunhead.

The Midsummer's Night Ball - a masquerade ball in Salisbury
  simm42

10:08pm 01/03/2008
Your hosts, Oberon and Titania, cordially invite you to enter our magic hall with your best finery and indulge in mischief, glamour, and magic in historic Salisbury, a few miles from sacred Stonehenge.

The ball is taking place on 20 June, 2008, Midsummer's eve, from 7:00pm till 1am. We truly wish to make this an evening for our guests to remember: be whisked away by a horse and carriage to the marble steps of the Salisbury guildhall, where the Oreo String Quartet will be playing music for the season in the Foyer. Fine wines and casked ales are being provided by Shipseys for your enjoyment. Puck and Attendant Faeries, courtesy of Firecat Masquerade, will be making an appearance to entertain our guests while DJ duo Sexbat and The Ingenue and DJ Andy Ravensable keep the trad-goth and industrial music going until the early hours. Photographer Dylan will take photos so you can have momentos of your special evening. Expect a surprise or two as well along the way, as this is a night when nothing is as it seems, and anything is possible!

Happy Solstice from HWK
  rebeccawood

12:17pm 08/06/2007

mood: happy
What has happened to the summer?

We're only 2 weeks away from the peak of the year and you'd think it was March out there. It was 7C on the May Bank Holiday. Seven degrees. We know because HWK was outside freezing our arses off to bring soap to the Great Unwashed (who were too stoned to even notice, but we're not bitter!).

We'd like to say a belated thank you to everyone who came to our party at </a></b></a>[info]a couple of weeks ago. We had a great time, and we loved all the feedback. Julia - if you are out there in LJ-land, thank you for saying that HWK soap has changed your life! We love to hear that kind of stuff.

Anyway, the reason for this rambling post is to let you all know that our next Sabbat soap is available online and in Treadwell's bookshop. This one is yellow (naturally), topped with orange sunwheels and infused with calendula and organic sunflower. The scent is a zingy blend of Frankincense, lemongrass, ginger and may chang, so at least you can be Zen about the lack of sunshine we're seeing this year!

Happy Solstice everyone,

The Rebeccas

mood: artistic
Hello All from the Hedgewitches' Kitchen!

We've just been told that there are a few places remaining for our soapmaking workshop at Brazier's Park over the Easter weekend.

Due to popular demand, Brazier's is offering special day rates for people who just want to attend for one day of their 4-day weekend.

For around £30 you can join us for a half-day session where we will demonstrate how to make traditional cold process soap, giving a talk with props, and then letting you get your hands dirty making Scott Cunningham's Balls.

*innocent look*

The other half-day session will be a guided tour among the hedgerows to gather herbs and to learn more about the beautiful Oxfordshire countryside that surrounds the Great Hall at Brazier's.

The day starts around 9.30am, lunch is included, and there is the option to stay and join us for the evening meal with the chance to try spinning on a wheel by the fire.

Transport is easy by train from London to Goring and Streatley station.

You know you want to!

Drop us a line to book at info@hedgewitcheskitchen.co.uk or visit our workshops page for more details.

Craft Fair / Twelfth Night Moot?

05:14pm 01/01/2007
  Hi,

Happy New Year!

This is x-posted in a couple of places, but I'm hoping that someone will have some info for us!

I was wondering if anyone had heard any news about a craft fair / moot being planned for next weekend (5-6th Jan)? As far as I am aware this is being organised by Liz from Treadwell's/LUSH(screen name = Culvalwen).

Any info you can pass on would be greatfully received as Rebecca B and I are hoping to have a table there to sell our soaps and stuff :o)

thinking of moving
  bookworm_chanty

03:26pm 18/12/2006

Hello all;

I hope I am not breaking any community rules with this post. If I am, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to.

I am a French Pagan woman living in Canada and I would really love to move to London around January 2008. I have never been on my own though and the whole process rather terrifies me.  I've been surfing the internet for information so that I don't just get to London with nothing but the clothes on my back and my trusty laptop computer. I have to say I haven't been very successful. I thought I might ask the Pagan community for some help as I've always been rather lucky with Pagans. The local community in Montreal was very welcoming for example.
If you could help me out maybe by pointing out good websites or books or simply sharing information or tips you think might make it simpler, I would be really grateful. Good online communities and chat rooms would be welcome too as  I would love to get in contact with people living in London.

my email is the.yarn.fairy@gmail.com if anyone would like to write/ become pen friends.

I'm especially interested in the whole matter of cost of life, cheap but good places to rent a flat, how the tube works (looks awfully confusing!), how big a Pagan community there is and what exactly is the purpose of a rubber duck ;-D

Visas are no problem since I am French.

Thanks for any help you can give me. Hopefully, I'll be able to join you in about a year's time :D

Chantal
