18 June 2009 (Thursday) Druids and Their Magic in Early Ireland: Making Sense of the Clouds, Stars, Ogham and Bull's Blood Lecture by Dr Mark Williams (Cambridge) £5.00 entry. 7.15pm for 7.30pm start Treadwells, 34 Tavistock Street, Covent Garden WC2E 7PB
Druids appear frequently in the rich saga literature of Early Ireland, engaged in a variety of eerie magical practices: clairvoyance, psychometry, cloud-divination, shape-shifting, and going into prophetic trances wrapped in the dripping hides of freshly-slaughtered bulls. And yet these actions, superficially so powerfully redolent of the pagan past, occur within literary texts which are products of a profoundly Christian, Bible-saturated medieval culture. How did early Irish monk-litterateurs envision the magic of their one-time rivals, the druids, and why on earth was imagining pagan magic of any interest for these 'saints and scholars'? Mark Williams of the University of Cambridge attempts to provide some answers.

Fulgur invites you to the launch of Barry Hale’s Legion 49. Hello!I am London based, and I've recently opened a shop online selling traditional pointy witch hats, and I'm currently posting the info around in case anyone might be interested. A while ago I became frustrated with the lack of proper pointy hats available (beyond the fake plasticy ones you can buy at Hallowe'en). I started making felt hats as an experiment, and enjoyed it so much that I decided to start selling them. The hats are felted from various different wools: unbleached and undyed natural colours such as Black Welsh and Bluefaced Leicester, as well as soft Merino wool dyed in any number of colours. Often I decorate them with brightly coloured silks, buttons, hatbands etc. However, these hats are made to be worn - The felt is hardy and weather resistant and will easily withstand being sat upon, dropped in puddles, stolen by toddlers etc! As such, they are ideal for wearing out and about. There are several hats up for sale on my website at the moment - I hope you like them! More usually though I work to commissions, so please feel free to e-mail me with your own designs at: cottonwoolfairy@hotmail.co.uk
Best Wishes, Imogen Rush www.cottonwoolfairy.etsy.com(P.S. I hope it's okay that I've posted this here!) |

Grimoires: Lecture followed by Launch Drinks from Oxford University Press Professor Owen Davies (University of Hertfordshire) 3rd June (Wednesday) 7.15 for 7.30 start. £5 Treadwells, 34 Tavistock St, Covent Garden.
Professor Owen Davies is the author of the seminal study of cunning men and cunning women (published first as Cunning Folk, reprinted as Popular Magic). His new book on magical texts is eagerly awaited, and tonight is its launch night. He will be giving a lecture on one aspect of the grimoire tradition, from his latest research. A launch party follows, hosted by the publisher of the book, Oxford University Press.
Owen Davies is Professor of Social History at the University of Hertfordshire. Much of his work has concerned the continued widespread belief in witchcraft and magic in the modern period, and why witchcraft accusations eventually declined in England during the early twentieth century. This has also led to work on popular medicine and folklore, comparative studies regarding France and Scotland, and interdisciplinary research applying anthropological and biomedical knowledge to historical topics. He has spoken at Treadwell's before and we warmly welcome his return. Tickets will go on sale in April 2009.
Reserve your place via Treadwell's by email (info@treadwells-london.com), or by phone, 020 7240 8906. Payment confirms booking. |
| 11:31am 10/04/2009 |
| |
 | Liber Nigri Solis An Aeonic Astrochymical Grimoire of the Black Sun Ed. “Victor Voronov” Presented in the UK exclusively by Treadwell's
|
The Black Sun rises this Beltane. This long-awaited work alchemically combines the occult, magical and initiatory work of two esoteric orders: the Arcanum Ordo Nigri Solis and the Ordo Hermeticum Sinistrum. Presenting the mythic imagery of the Black Sun along with its alchemical and astrological aspects and significances, this grimoire includes a concise though multi-faceted system of esoteric correspondences suitable for work with the Black Sun on microcosmic, mesocosmic, and macrocosmic levels. In addition to the relevant previously unpublished arcane correlations of the sinister astrological arte, the grimoire suggests magical techniques associated with Eighteen Keys opening the Nine Infernal Gates and the Nine Gates of Radiant Darkness leading to the vision of the Black Sun, and the Twelve Crooked Paths that cross their Nine Thresholds. Further, the text describes magical relevance of the twelve rays of the Black Sun, and other significant concepts such as the Fivefold Unmanifest or the Grand Chymical Conjunction of the arcane Black Suns that unveils the fiery gates of the Inverse Opus. The artes reveal self-Liber Nigriinitiatory workings, rites, and operations of sinister alchemy, initiating the practitioner into the gnosis of Sol Niger.
The Launch. May 1st. Friday Night. May Day, the wake of Walpurgisnacht. At Treadwell’s Bookshop, 34 Tavistock Street, London WC2. Join us, and the authors and editor. Those attending may have their copies sigilised and signed, and if Treadwell's parties are anything to go by, we predict late-night debaucheries of debate, delight and destiny. The party is free but on the night will be strictly limited to those on the guest list. Just email or ring to be included.

| Upcoming Event: A 19th Century Gay Pagan (Thrs 19th Feb) |
|
|
| 12:49pm 17/02/2009 |
| |
A 19th Century Gay Pagan: The Spirituality and Life of Edward Carpenter with Dr Jenny Alexander 19th February 2009 (Thursday) 7.15 for a 7.30 start. £5
One tends to think of the pagan revival as a 20th-century phenomenon, but in fact the 19th century had a handful of dedicated seekers whose spirituality would speak clearly to pagans today. Edward Carpenter (1844-1929) was one of these, and tonight introduces him and his beliefs. He was not only pagan but a radical; a socialist, an anarchist, a vegetarian, and a homosexual who left his privileged background to live with his working-class male lover at the very time of Oscar Wilde's prosecution. He is a forefather to many: gay people, leftist visionaries, anarchists, and -- as Dr Alexander will show in this lecture -- pagans. She will illuminate Carpenter's vision: collective cosmic consciousness; sexual liberation; political commitment to the liberation of the human condition; and metaphysical commitment to seeking union with nature. Carpenter's ideas are relevant to pagans today, perhaps more than ever before. Come see if you agree.
Jenny Alexander is an engaging and provocative lecturer. She wrote her doctoral thesis on nineteenth-century anarchist autobiography, lectured in Gender and Media Studies at the University of Sussex until 2006, and present is an investigative researcher at the Advertising Standards Authority. She has been a practising pagan for ten years. This lecture is presented in honour of LesbianGayBiTrans History Month.

Adventures of an Alchemist: Encounters, Dreams, Synchonicities and Travels with Paul Cowlan 5th February 2009 (Thursday) 7.15 for a 7.30 start £5 payable in advance
Paul Cowlan has twenty-five years' involvement with 'the secret art', as alchemy is sometimes called. He speaks annually at Treadwell's on the its symbolism, history and philosophy. For Paul, however, alchemy is much more than an intellectual interest. Tonight you will be regaled with stories of what it's like for one man to have lived with these symbols and processes for most of his adult life. In his own words, 'alchemy has been central to my personal development from that moment of synchronicity in 1985 which brought my latent interest suddenly into the daylight world.' Shortly after this event his dream diaries began revealing that his nights were teeming with alchemical activities as well. And that was just the start....tonight, it all comes out in the telling. ‘Somnium narrare vigilantis est’, says Seneca: whoever relates his dreams must be awake.
Paul Cowlan returns to Treadwell's to give this talk at the request of those who have been to his annual lectures and who have asked for this, more personal evening of anecdotes and reflections. His engaging style and command of his material never fail to enchant.

The Monstrous Lesbian: Literature and Art c. 1900-1930 11th February 2009 (Wednesday) 7.15 fro 7.30 pm start. £5 A lively lecture punctuated with illustrations and quotations, exploring the image of “The Lesbian” – monstrous, tragic and exoticised, in English literature of the 1910s and 20s. The idea of her monstrosity arose from the culture of the time: the fin-de-siècle fascination with “deadly and dangerous females”as well as the appearance of images of aesthetic and decadent men.

Annie Horniman - Introduced and Celebrated: Golden Dawn Magician, and Theatre Impresario with Caroline Wise and Friends Treadwells, 34 Tavistock St, London 3rd December (Wednesday) 7.15 for 7.30 pm start, £5 (please book in advance)
Annie Horniman (1860-1937) was one of the leading women in the Order of the Golden Dawn in its heyday in late Victorian London. A tireless organiser, patron, committee member and one of the core group that "made thing happen", she was better remembered for this than for her magical life. But sincere and active practitioner that she was, she performed ritual, meditated, had mystical visions, and taught neophytes in the order. Some remember her as the more prudish of the Golden Dawn, but this is unfair, for she chain-smoked, never married, and sometimes appeared in public wearing exotic outfits. Another facet of Annie Horniman's life was her pioneering work in the theatre, driven by a belief that theatre brings spiritual richness to people generally, and to this end she was, through her life, active in funding and production in British theatre -- numerous projects that are still recognised today: West End shows, repertory theatre, and ritual theatre. She founded the Abbey Theatre in Dublin and the Gaeity Theatre in Manchester. Artists whose work she supported included WB Yeats and GB Shaw.
If you are interested in the Golden Dawn, magical women, and the power of theatre, this night is for you. Caroline Wise's slide lecture with anecdotes will introduce you to Annie Horniman, and we will raise a glass to this remarkable but often-overlooked magician.

| Making Magical Incense: A Hands-On Practical Day Course |
|
|
| 02:08pm 08/11/2008 |
| |
22nd November (Saturday) 12 noon - 5.45 pm £30
Fumigatories, or suffumigations (incenses), are an integral art in the grimoire tradition, ceremonial magic, cunning witchcraft and folk magic. In this workshop, the making of incense for magic is introduced in a hands-on environment. The principles behind recipes for numerous purposes are explained: psychic power, visionary ability, love, legal success, justice and house purification. The students will be taught the particular magical powers of certain gum bases, then oils, roots, barks, leaves and petals.
There is hands-on practice all the way through, and samples of all the ingredients will be tested. Each person will mix three personal fumigatories. Instructions from old recipe books will be looked at, as time permits. The fee includes samples, supplies, refreshments and handouts. By the end of the day you will be able to make hand-blended incense at home from basic ingredients. We have deliberately timed this day in advance of Christmas, for those of you who would like to make incense as a gift for friends this year. Everyone attending the workshop is entitled to a 10 percent discount on incense ingredients on sale at Treadwell's on the day.
Paul Wood is one half of Wood-Moss Herbals, a small company specialising in the making authentic historical incenses from actual ancient recipes. He has taught at Treadwell's for several years.

30th October (Thursday) 7.15 for 7.30 pm start £5
Halloween is the night the ghosts are out and the veil between the worlds is thin. In the basement of Treadwell's old and haunted building, in the luminous darkness of candle-light, two ghost stories will be told/performed. Your master of the macabre is Mike David, back for this evening by popular demand. The two tales for the evening are Robert Louis Stevenson's 'Markheim', a spooky, Dostoyevskian tale of murder and dopplegangers; and 'The Squaw' by Bram Stoker, a gruesome little tale of feline murder and bloodsoaked revenge. A soiree will follow the chilling readings. Join us!
Mike's dramatic readings have become much-favoured events at Treadwell's; he is an actor, writer and lover of things mystical, with over 30 years in the theatre. His evenings are riveting. A soiree will follow the chilling readings. Join us!

Madame Guyon, Mystic Prophetess of France: Early Modern Female Spiritual Leadership and Vision talk by Richard Lines (Swedenborg Society) 16th October (Thursday) 7.15 for 7.30 start £5, 34 Tavistock Street, Covent Garden
Women appear relatively rarely as spiritual or mystical leaders in the West. A few achieve lasting fame, but some who were influential in their own day fade into obscurity after their short period of fame. Tonight's speaker introduces one female mystical leader who deserves remembering and celebrating: Madame Jeanne Guyon of 17th-century France. Scholar of mysticism Evelyn Underhill described Madame Guyon as a 'medium' exhibiting clairvoyance, prophecy, telepathy, and automatic writing in bewildering profusion. A wealthy widow by age 28, this remarkable woman forged a religious career as a mystical teacher, writer and prophet. About her happened psychic phenomena and strange occurrences. The Catholic church had her arrested and sent to prison for seven years, but yet she continued to write, having produced a 20-volume commentary on the Bible, an autobiography, and many short works.
If you are interested in sexuality, early modern culture, spirituality, religion, mysticism, even angelic magic - we invite you to come along and meet this remarkable woman. We like to think her thoughts and adventures will make you think about transcendent experience in a new way.
Tonight's speaker is Richard Lines. Richard is Secretary of the Swedenborg Society in Bloomsbury and author of numerous articles and scholarly essays. He has a particular interest in seventeenth century mystics and religious leaders, including Madame Guyon and Emmanuel Swedenborg.

| The Esoteric Grail and The Emerald Tablet Talks |
|
|
| 08:46pm 21/09/2008 |
| |
The Esoteric Grail: Early 20th Century Britain Dr Juliette Wood (University of Cardiff) 23rd September (Tuesday) 7.15 for 7.30 pm start. £5
The early 20th century was a rich time for British occultism and secret societies. The Golden Dawn, the Rider-Waite Tarot, the novels of Charles Williams, the Christian hermeticism of AE Waite, Aleister Crowley's OTO; all were flourishing at this time. And over in Glastonbury, a chalice was discovered in a well; was it from the last supper? Visions suggested it was. Then Dion Fortune appeared there. Again and again the symbol of the holy grail appeared amongst these groups, in their ceremonies, their visions, their dreams, their art and their poetry. Juliette Wood, in her magisterial and lively style, show just how it did.
Tonight will be will be a panoply of chalices, cups and grails, accompanied by tales of art, novels, tarot cards, rituals and regalia. We promise that if you come along you will never look at a wineglass the same way again.
Juliette Wood is one of Britain's leading experts on myth and folklore. A Director of the Folklore Society, London, she is also an associate lecturer in the School of Welsh Cardiff University . A regular contributor to TV and radio, she is the author of several books on Celtic myth and legend, such asThe Celts: Life, Myth and Legend (Duncan Baird 2003) and The Rose and the Thistle: Essays on the Culture of Late Medieval and Renaissance Scotland (Tuckwell Press). Her most recent book is Eternal Chalice: The Enduring Legend of the Holy Grail (IB Tauris, 2008)
The Emerald Tablet Introduced An Illustrated Lecture by Paul Cowlan 24th September (Wednesday) 7.15 for a 7.30 start. £5
"As above, so below." This phrase expresses core concept in alchemy, in hermeticism and in magic. It is from a remarkable text called The Emerald Tablet, which dates from the first centuries AD, in Egypt. Supposedly written by Hermes Trismegistus himself, patron of spiritual transformative magic, it is full of mysterious references and allusions which point to the way the work of magic connects to the world and to the spirit. For a full text in contemporary translation, see Wikepedia, "Emerald Tablet."
The Emerald Tablet's principles were essential in modern magic: Golden Dawn, Crowley, Gardnerian Wicca, Alex Sanders, Dion Fortune -- all these cite and base their magical principles on the doctrine 'as above, so below'. In this illustrated talk Paul Cowlan will outline the text's history and guide you through the Emerald Tablet itself.
Paul Cowlan has been studying and working non-operative alchemy for over 20 years. By profession he is musician, poet and songwriter. We have an archive of past courses (http://www.treadwells-london.com/coursespast.asp), and you can also subscribe to our mailing list (http://www.treadwells-london.com/mailinglist.php). |
