Meeting Friends?
I'm American but I've lived in the UK for over a year now, and I'm desperate to make some friends! I've met a few people here, but most of them have left after a few months. Unlike them, I'm here permanently. I have no idea how to make friends in this country. It's hard because sometimes I really feel like an outsider. I really want to meet some people who I relate to, but am finding it difficult. I have a job and work 45 hours a week, and am married. Any advice?

I too have great difficulty making friends. I'm great one to one, but in a group I'm so shy I turn into another person. So I wanted to comment but don't take my advice for God's sake! The only way I have managed to make friends over the years is through the internet, and in my defence of such a resource:- It's got to be a good place to find great people - I'm here!

Of course you could try the good old English pub. You're unlikely to find much intellectual stimulation, but you're sure to find friendly people.

PS - I lived in London for 2 years (if that's where you are) and it really can be one of the loneliest cities. I found it to be a place where everyone's an outsider - most people are from somewhere else with a story to tell.

Good luck - and if you get stuck, come on holiday to Wiltshire :D

I think my problem is kind of the same... I get really shy around large groups, but for me it usually only lasts the first few times I'm there. Thanks for the advice! :)
