UCL - Getting back to normal
I am writing to all UCL alumni to thank you for the messages of concern that have been flooding in from around the world in response to yesterday's terrorist outrages in London. I am relieved to be able to reassure you that, although these events have inevitably caused distress amongst the UCL community, we have not suffered any direct damage - though we are aware of one member of staff who was seriously injured.
It has been an exceptionally difficult 24 hours for everyone at UCL, but we have managed to keep things running: the true spirit of UCL has prevailed, and I know that you will share my enormous pride in this quality that is so powerful amongst our community of staff and students.
Although it is quiet on the Bloomsbury campus today, things are already getting back to normal, and we expect to be fully operational again next Monday, 11 July.
Please be assured that we are in good shape. We have been fortunate not to have suffered any direct damage. We are not unaffected by this tragedy, but we are now restoring normality and getting on with our daily tasks. We look forward to moving from strength to strength, undented by these barbaric acts.
Thank you again for your thoughts, for your prayers, and for your support.

| Hello there, this is just a quick message to thank everyone for their support here. I managed to get in touch with my father a few hours ago, he was in hospital for minor burns and monitoring overnight, so his phone was turned off for him per hospital rules, which is why I kept getting his voice mail. He's fine, we've spoken, and I'm flying to London tonight to be with him. I am very happy that my story turned out well, and I'm more than willing to do anything I can to help anyone here who needs help getting in touched with loved ones. Thank you again! | |

| Nigel Rich, the chairman of CP Ships, has reported that all staff and families of CP Ships (UK) are safe.
This was via internal memo from Mr. Rich himself, and frankly I don't know if I'm even allowed to post this, but it seemed to me that it was more important to share this information than to keep it private.

| I've brought all the lists up to date overnight. Although LJ was bouncing email notification of all posts to my own inbox, not all the confirmations were getting into the comments threads on the actual posts. I've gone through my mail box and updated the name lists again. Apologies if unnecessary anxiety was caused to anyone. I'll update at intervals today, to keep things straight. In particular, if any missing persons are confirmed as safe, please let me know. People Safe A-M is here (alphabeticised) People Safe N-Z is here (alphabeticised) The 'We Are Looking For' list is here Second Missing List here – I've also transferred these names to 'We Are Looking For' | |
|
| I've created a Missing Persons page as well. This will probably be of more use than the safe people one. I'm working on making it editable. If someone gets found, please email me at veratien AT vinari DOT co DOT uk until I fix the script. | |

| Dave Pesetsky at MIT forwarded this along. It's a small segment of the London population, granted, but all good news is welcome, right?
>From: "Neil Smith" >To: "David Pesetsky" >Subject: Re: everyone ok? >Date: Thu, 7 Jul 2005 19:35:40 +0100 > >Dear David, >Many thanks for the e-mail. >All the department are ok. >Very best wishes, >Neil.
EDIT: Dave and Neil's e-mail addresses removed - oops. Anyway, they're real and in a position to know what they're talking about.

| Have just heard from an old friend in the State Department - all of the Americans who are Fulbright scholars in London are safe and accounted for.
I haven't been able to look back through all the entries of the last few hours yet, so please delete this if it's already been stated, but I thought I might as well mention it.

| Hi. I don't live in London or the UK, but I do work at Google, and I just wanted to let people on here know that I saw an email cross my inbox saying that everyone in the Google London office is accounted for. If you're having trouble locating someone who works for that office, it seems they're likely doing fine.
Hopefully, this information will be of some use.

| Hi. I've set up a site at http://vinari.co.uk/lb/ which is a database of names of people that are definately safe. The idea is for people or friends of people that are safe or definately know that someone is safe to add them to the list. This way, people might not get so panicky, and can go to one place to find out if someone is ok. It's rudimentary, but works. Please send this link around and get people to add names to the list of people who are safe, along with the first part of the post-code they live in to help tell them apart from others who will inevietably have the same name. I know the worry that happened after the WTC came down, so hopefully this should help if enough people find out about it. Thanks. Ben Nolan. | |

| Updated: 10th July 13:04, p.m. BST The LJ community set-up won't let me forward-date this post to ensure it remains at the head of the journal, so please don't ask. I can do nothing about it. Friday update: checking my email this morning, I've found that some 'safe' posts didn't seem to make it to the journal comments threads although posts bounced to my personal email box. I've now listed everyone mentioned there; apologies if this caused any extra anxiety for people. ( behind the cut ) | |
